Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Prediction of Rainfall Induced Landslides using TRIGRS and Scoops3D models

Jetted and grouted precast piles (JGPPs) are a newly developed urban-friendly deep foundation technique that employs water jetting for pile penetration and pressure grouting to enhance the axial and torsional resistance of precast piles. Previous experimental studies of JGPPs in a large test chamber setup have revealed that they can withstand very high axial loads; however, validation of the same in a typical field scenario was needed. This paper presents the pioneering study of the full-scale axial response of JGPPs in cohesionless soil condition. The study showed that JGPPs exhibit high skin and tip resistances under axial top-down loading. The paper also proposes a direct method to predict the ultimate skin resistance of JGPPs using the pressuremeter test results. The experimental results were compared with the values estimated using both the proposed and existing methods.

Pressure-grouted soil nailing has been extensively used as a soil stabilization technique in transportation infrastructure projects, wherein resistance against pull-out failure is offered by shear resistance mobilized along the nail–soil interface. However, the different stages of soil nail installation significantly alter the soil properties and residual normal stress at the grout-soil interface and thereby the maximum pull-out shear stress. This article presents a computational procedure to predict the maximum pull-out shear stress of pressure-grouted soil nails in sand, incorporating the variation in soil properties and stresses throughout the installation processes and loading. The procedure is formulated within the framework of cavity expansion-contraction solutions as the entire installation and testing phases resemble either expansion or contraction of a cylindrical cavity. The proposed approach was validated using grouting and pull-out test data of soil nails in sand. The influence of various parameters on pull-out shear stress has also been examined.

An industrial building is a non-classically damped system due to the different damping properties of the primary structure and equipment. The objective of this paper is to quantify the range of applicability of the real model superposition approximation method to the seismic response calculation of industrial buildings. The analysis using lumped mass-and-shear spring models indicates that for the equipment-to-structure frequency ratios γf &gt; 1.1 or γf &lt; 0.9, the non-classical damping effect is limited, and the real mode superposition approximation method provides accurate estimates.

Range of applicability of real mode superposition approximation method for seismic response calculation of non-classically damped industrial buildings

Rainfall induced slope failures are becoming a major threat in unsaturated soil slopes worldwide. Major part of Kerala state in India, especially the hilly regions are covered with residual lateritic soil that are formed under the process of weathering and mineralogical changes in the parent rock. Matric suction within the natural soil slopes contribute to its stability in the unsaturated state as it increases the shear strength. Many rainfall induced slope failures were reported in lateritic soil slopes in Kerala, during monsoon seasons of 2018, 2019, and 2020. An attempt was made to check the feasibility of application of geosynthetic reinforced composites in repairing and reconstructing a failed soil slope by means of resilient reinforced soil structures. The reinforced composites used in the present study was a knitted polypropylene non-woven geotextile, reinforced with high-tenacity polyester yarns in both machine and cross machine directions. The geotechnical characterization of the soil collected from the failed slope was carried out. Soil water characteristic curve of the lateritic soil and geosynthetic water characteristic curve of the hybrid geosynthetics were experimentally determined. Rainfall infiltration analysis was conducted in order to check the resilience or adaptation of the geosynthetics reinforced soil slopes to a changing climate. The stability analysis confirmed that the unreinforced soil slopes fail at the onset of rainfall infiltration whereas reinforced slope with reinforced composites helped in maintaining the integrity of slopes.

Reinforced Composites for Resilient Reinforced Soil Slopes to Prevent Rainfall Induced Failures

Cavity expansion and contraction solutions for cylindrical and spherical cavities in unsaturated residual soils are presented in this paper. Varying soil state in the plastic zone is accounted by a numerical approach, wherein an element-by-element discretization of the plastic zone of both expanding and contracting cavities is carried out. Unlike existing methods utilizing self-similarity technique, the solution procedure enables the prediction of entire soil-state at any stage of expansion and subsequent contraction. It is also applicable for both cavity creation and expansion problems. The approach adopts constant contribution of suction to effective stress (constant Xs drainage condition) for analysis. The analysis procedure is validated by interpreting the previously reported pressure meter test results in lateritic residual soil. The typical cavity expansion and contraction characteristics of unsaturated Indian lateritic soil were then examined using this solution procedure. The effect of initial soil-state on cavity limit pressure, plastic radius, reverse yield pressure, and reverse plastic radius are also presented.

Analysis of cavity expansion and contraction in unsaturated residual soils

Surface grinding is observed to be an inevitable machining event in many of the functional engineering surfaces after pre-processing stages such as milling. Prediction of roughness profile after grinding on such initial surfaces, for selected operating conditions and grinding wheel specification, is always an interesting topic of investigation. Though a number of models have been reported in prior art, value additions through hybrid modelling strategies have been always contributing positively to this field of research due to the stochastic nature of abrasive interactions. Since feed rate of work piece is identified as a key grinding variable influencing the surface roughness, present paper introduces grain trajectory addition and elimination algorithm driven by feed based time scale to predict the ground surface topography. A realistic initial surface modelling is considered using meshless moving least square approximation incorporating both roughness as well as geometric deviation, expected to be imparted during pre-grinding stages. The algorithm is configured to compute two dimensional roughness parameters from the simulated surface profiles and these results are compared with experimental outcomes at various depths of grinding to validate the proposed model. © IMechE 2022.
