Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Research involving the interaction of magnetic field with various engineering process have started gaining attention in recent years. Magnetic field has been used to improve various manufacturing processes or alter the physical conditions to generate a favorable output. Prominent applications of magnetic field are in the areas of mixing of fluids, fabrication of nanoparticles and weld confinement. A major challenge so far has been to generate a magnetic field and identify regions of uniform flux. This paper presents a systematic study of various parameters affecting the magnetic field like magnetization orientation and number of magnets. Furthermore, different physical arrangements of magnets are evaluated using finite element simulation to generate magnetic field. Regions of uniform magnetic field are identified using these simulation results. These results can be used for further applications requiring uniform magnetic fields. © 2015 Hindustan University.

Optimization of parameters for uniform magnetic field

This paper presents a robust nonlinear control scheme for task-space trajectory control for an autonomous underwater vehicle- manipulator system (AUVMS) based on an improved proportional integral derivative (PID) control scheme used for deep-sea intervention tasks. A planar underwater vehicle manipulator system (consists of an underwater vehicle and two link rotary (2R) serial planar manipulator) with dynamic coupling between them is considered for the study and numerical simulation. The actuator and sensor dynamics of the system are also considered. The proposed controller integrates the known approximated inverse dynamic model output as a model-base portion of the controller; uses a feed forward term to enhance the control activity with indulgence from known desired acceleration vector; carries an estimated perturbed term to compensate for the unknown effects namely external disturbances and un-modelled dynamics and a decoupled nonlinear PID controller as a feedback portion to enhance closed-loop stability and account for the estimation error of uncertainties. The primary objective of the proposed control scheme is to track the given end-effector task-space trajectory despite of external disturbances, system uncertainties and internal noises associated with the AUVMS system, which show the robustness of the proposed control scheme. Simulation results confirmed that the AUVMS can successfully track the given desired spatial trajectory. © 2015 IEEE.

Robust nonlinear task space position tracking control of an autonomous underwater vehicle-manipulator system

A novel heuristic approach to resource estimation and target determination in interrupted and shortened Twenty20 cricket matches is presented. The present approach mimics Kleiber's allometric relation to define the effective resources for a team. Unlike existing methods, the present methodology computes the resources using a simple non-statistical method to decide on the revised target, called the Kleiber target, in interrupted matches. The proposed approach is applied to a wide range of real-match scenarios involving one or more interruptions. Case studies show that the Kleiber target is consistent and reasonable over a spectrum of match situations and offers an inexpensive, robust and elegant methodology to reset targets in shortened Twenty20 matches. © 2015 Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Bio-allometry inspired resource estimation in Twenty20 cricket

A generic methodology for the design of interface capturing schemes for immiscible multi-fluid flows using the VOF (Volume-Of-Fluid) approach is outlined. Interface capturing schemes are devised as a blend of high-resolution and compressive schemes and their efficiency and accuracy are dependent on the choice of the constituent schemes and the blending function. On the basis of a set of design principles proposed in this work, we show that interface capturing schemes proposed in literature may be encompassed into a single class of GPL (Generalised Piecewise Linear)-κ schemes allowing for a unified approach for development of such schemes. This methodology is used to de-construct four existing schemes and to propose two new schemes for interface capture in an unstructured finite volume framework. The schemes are tested on challenging advection problems using both structured and unstructured grids to evaluate their performance. The new schemes perform as well as existing schemes and even outperform them on unstructured grids, while also exhibiting near Courant number independence for all test problems and grid topologies. The CUIBS (Cubic Upwind Interpolation based Blending Scheme) proposed in the study shows the best performance among all interface capturing schemes discussed herein and is applied to the study of immiscible binary fluid flows. Numerical simulations of viscous sloshing in a tank and Rayleigh-Taylor instability demonstrate the ability of the CUIBS scheme to resolve fluid-fluid interfaces with minimal diffusion. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

A generic framework for design of interface capturing schemes for multi-fluid flows

A large number of studies in the literature have looked at secondary atomization of Newtonian liquids such as n-Heptane, water, ethyl alcohol, mercury and glycerol solutions and ‘drop deformation and breakup regime maps’ have been plotted based on the studies. The aim of the present research is to study the secondary atomization of heated liquids. One of the liquids that was studied is molten beeswax which is a shear-thinning non-Newtonian liquid. A mono-disperse stream generator equipped with a piezo-stack and a heater produced mono-disperse droplets of molten beeswax and their breakup due to cross-flow was captured using backlit imaging. The continuous jet method was used in this study. The Weber number was varied by changing the velocity of air jet and bag breakup, multimode breakup and sheet-thinning breakup were observed in the range studied. © 2015 International Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems. Studies on secondary atomization of non-newtonian molten droplets

Spray characteristics are considered as influencing factors which determine air-fuel mixing and combustion in a diesel engine combustion chamber. Almost all modern diesel engines are fitted with high pressure common rail injection system and multi-hole injectors. In the present work, spray characteristics are studied for a multi-hole common rail injector with all nozzle holes open and with a single nozzle hole open. This is important as in the characterization of multi-plume dense sprays like diesel, often a single-plume is used by blocking the other nozzle holes. Experiments have been conducted in a constant volume, high pressure and high temperature chamber with various injection pressures and at various ambient conditions. A six-hole injector is considered for the study. The penetration and cone angle of the spray from each hole is measured and the hole-to-hole variation is studied. Later, five holes of the injector are blocked by micro welding and the remaining single-plume has been characterized and compared with multi-plume spray. It has been observed that hole-to-hole variation in respect with spray penetration and cone angle are minimal both at lower and higher temperatures. The study also shows that the penetration length and cone angle of the single-plume matches well with that of the multi-plumes at all pressure and temperature conditions. The spray from the single-hole has been characterized by both Mie scattering and backlit shadow imaging techniques to compare the penetration length and cone angle measured from the two imaging techniques. © 2015 International Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems. Estimation of Thermal Contact Conductance Using Inverse Analysis

The wind turbine drive train dynamic analysis is carried out with and without existence of gear tooth breakage. The loads acting on the wind turbine are considered based on Danish Standard DS472 which is a simplified method of taking loads in wind turbine. A broken gear tooth is modelled by the change in the gear tooth thickness. The gear mesh stiffness of broken tooth is evaluated by the change in cross sectional area and area moment of inertia due to change in tooth geometry. From the frequency representation of vibration data, the fault information is not clearly observed due to the insensitiveness of the dynamic system to the stochastic loads. However, by further analysis, fault information is obtained with the use of the gear tooth contact force from which a clear sub harmonics are observed at the defective pinion tooth frequency. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Effect of Gear Tooth Breakage on the Dynamic Response in a Wind Turbine Drive Train Subjected to Stochastic Load Excitation

Heat transfer investigations of flame jet impingement over a curved surface

This paper addresses a comparative analysis of a three degree of freedom (DOF) planar parallel manipulators (x, y and φ) namely 3RRR, 3PRP, 3PRR, 3PPR base, 3PPR U base and 2PRP-PPR in terms of optimal kinematic design performance and dynamic performance. Kinematic and dynamic performance analyses of these six different configurations have been done using MATLAB and Adams/View software. From the simulation results, it is observed that the 2PRP-PPR planar parallel manipulator is associated with a few favorable optimum design aspects namely singularity free workspace, isotropy and better dynamic performance in terms of energy requirement as compare to other planar parallel manipulators discussed here. © 2015 ACM.
