Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Numerical simulations of stable Syngas combustion in Trapped Vortex Combustor

An important metallurgical difficulty in arc welding of high-strength aluminum alloys is formation of solidification cracking. In this work, an attempt is made to reduce the solidification cracking in welding of aluminum alloys through vibratory treatment. The material used for the investigation is AA2014 aluminum alloy, which is highly prone to solidification cracking. Vibratory treatment was carried out in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 3700 Hz. Weldments made with and without vibratory treatment were compared using weld cracking tests and other characterization tests such as microstructural analysis. The test results show that by applying vibratory treatment, solidification cracking can be largely controlled in arc welding. © EDP Sciences, 2011.

Studies on the effect of vibratory treatment on reduction of solidification cracking in AA2014 aluminum alloys

In diagnosing mechanical faults of rotating machinery, it is very important to know the vibration feature of the machine with various forms of fault. A rotor system with fault is generally a complicated non-linear vibrating system. Its vibration is in a very complex form. Rotating machinery is very popular in industrial applications. Most of the mechanical failures are due to vibrations. It is more so in case of rotating machinery. Main cause of vibrations is faults in the rotating systems like unbalance, looseness, etc. In this paper Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are used to identify unbalance and looseness in rotor bearing system. Here it is considered as two class classification problem. Experiments are conducted to collect the vibration data in both horizontal and vertical directions, from the rotating system. Statistical features are extracted from the vibration data and fed to neural networks for classifying the unbalance and looseness. These results are useful for making maintenance decision.

Identification of unbalance and looseness in rotor bearing systems using neural networks

An important rotor fault, which can lead to catastrophic failure if undetected, is fatigue crack in the shaft. Cracked rotating shafts have been the subject of studies and investigations for more than four decades, with some review papers published over this period. The aim of this paper is to discuss very recent developments of the research on cracked rotors, including the inverse problem of the identification of cracks in rotating machinery. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011.

Some recent studies on cracked rotors

This paper explores to relate total fatigue damage and frequency of vibration resulting from excitation of a cantilever beam. From recent studies on damage mechanics, it is found that the magnitude of total fatigue damage of a component not only depends on the induced dynamic strain but also on the severity of vibrations. The Hybrid I-kaz method provides a two dimensional graphical representation of the measured strain and vibration signal. Hybrid I-kaz parameter (Zh) provides a measure for the degree of data scattering and thus incorporating strain-vibration effects into the relation between frequency and total fatigue damage. The comparative study is implemented using strain-life approach, and Hybrid Integrated kurtosis based algorithm for Z notch filter technique (Hybrid I-kaz). Two sets of the experiments are conducted, considering the frequencies near first mode and second mode of the beam. The pattern obtained by frequency variation with the Hybrid kurtosis parameter is useful in finding hybrid kurtosis parameter at any given frequency of vibration. It is found that the total fatigue damage is varying linearly with the hybrid kurtosis parameter. This relation is proved to be useful in predicting fatigue damage of a beam at any frequency of vibration.

Vibration based fatigue damage assessment of cantilever beams

This paper describes the dynamic modelling, simulation and control of an underwater vehicle equipped with two degrees of freedom (DOF) planar underwater manipulator with all its joints revolute. Performance analysis of underwater vehicle and manipulator tracking control in spatial co-ordinates are done using numerical simulations. A PID controller based feedback linearization control design is developed for the underwater vehicle and manipulator. Controlled movement in surge (xdirection), sway (y-direction) and heave (z-direction) directions is achieved for the underwater vehicle and controlled movement in x-z (global) plane is achieved for the underwater manipulator, both with respect to inertial frame of reference. Simulation of tracking control of the robot using cubic polynomial equation based trajectory planning is done. © 2011 IEEE.

Dynamic modelling, simulation and spatial control of an underwater robot equipped with a planar manipulator

This paper addresses the problem of trajectory tracking control of an underactuated autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in the horizontal plane. The underwater vehicle under consideration is not actuated in the sway direction, and the system matrices are not assumed to be diagonal and linear, as often found in the literature. In addition, the effect of constant bias of environmental disturbances is considered. Using backstepping techniques and the tracking error dynamics, the system states are stabilized by forcing the tracking errors to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of zero. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is demonstrated through numerical simulations. Simulations are carried out for an experimental vehicle for smooth, inertial, two dimensional (2D) reference trajectories such as constant velocity trajectory (a circle maneuver - constant yaw rate), and time varying velocity trajectory (a sinusoidal path - sinusoidal yaw rate).

Planar tracking control of an underactuated autonomous underwater vehicle

Elemental identification of material is a prime most important in material science field. Electric discharge is used for material elemental identification with optical emission spectroscopy. During electric discharge machining between two electrodes plasma is generated which emits intense radiation in the UV-Visible region. The generated plasma captured by optical emission spectroscopic technique and elements are identified from recorded spectra by matching with standard NIST database. This method is simple, rapid, and inexpensive compared to all other elemental identification method. The elements of the metal, semiconductors, even insulators can be identified without much difficulty. The elemental identification of material has been investigated in macro and micro level. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Elemental identification of materials using optical emission spectra during electric discharge machining

This paper presents the detailed modelling and simulation of the dynamic coupling in an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-manipulator system, used for deep-sea intervention tasks. The interaction effects due to damping, restoring and inertial effects of a single degree of freedom (DOF) manipulator mounted on an underactuated AUV are analysed. The actuator and sensor dynamics of the system are also considered. The linear and angular position errors of the vehicle and the manipulator due to the interaction effects between them are also investigated and the results are presented. A model reference adaptive control (MRAC) scheme is proposed to compensate the above mentioned errors. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated using numerical simulations along with comparative study between conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control. The robustness of the proposed control scheme is also illustrated with numerical study in the presence of external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. © 2011 ICROS.

Modelling, simulation and model reference adaptive control of autonomous underwater vehicle-manipulator systems

We propose a novel algorithm for velocity reconstruction from staggered data on arbitrary polygonal staggered meshes. The formulation of the new algorithm is based on a constant polynomial reconstruction approach in conjunction with an iterative defect correction method and is referred to as the IDeC(k) reconstruction. The algorithm is designed for second order accuracy of the reconstructed velocity field and also leads to a consistent estimate of velocity gradients. Accuracy, convergence and robustness of the new algorithm are studied on different mesh topologies and the need for higher-order reconstruction is demonstrated. Numerical experiments for several cases including incompressible viscous flows establish the IDeC(k) reconstruction as a generic, fast, robust and higher-order accurate algorithm on arbitrary polygonal meshes. © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
