Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Small contractors remain unsustainable despite the initiatives to enhance their development. This paper attempts to identify the gap betweenentrepreneurial leadership approachandsustainable growthof small contractors. This study focuses only on the literature and identifies the relationship between the sustainable growth and entrepreneurial leadership. In detail, the reviewprovidesthe information about the challenges facedby the small contractors to retain their growth. The literature showed that there is a relationship between the entrepreneurial leadership and the growth of small contractors.Findings further indicated that innovation was essential for growth of an organisation.The study also revealed that there exist a positive relationship between innovation andtransformational leadership.Further, the past research showed that other factors such as calculated risk taking and pro-activeness apart from the innovation of an entrepreneur will enable the small business to be sustainable in the market.The findings uncovered the advantages of transformation leadership style and entrepreneurial capabilityto sustain the growth of small contractors

Shear Strength Behavior of Kaolinite with Different Microfabrics

This paper presents an elasto-plastic element free Galerkin formulation based on Newton-Raphson algorithm for damage growth analysis. Isotropic ductile damage evolution law is used. A study has been carried out in this paper using the proposed element free Galerkin method to understand the effect of initial damage and its growth on structural response of single and bi-material problems. Asimple method is adopted for enforcing EBCs by scaling the function approximation using a scaling matrix, when non-singular weight functions are used over the entire domain of the problem definition. Numerical examples comprising of oneand two-dimensional problems are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in analysis of uniform and non-uniform damage evolution problems. Effect of material discontinuity on damage growth analysis is also presented. © 2010 Indian Academy of Sciences.

Continuum damage growth analysis using element free Galerkin method

The axial compressive strength of the cold-formed steel (CFS) members with edge or intermediate stiffener is affected by interaction of local, distortional and overall buckling. In order to overcome the tedious and time consuming nature of the traditional Effective Section method of evaluating strength of such members, direct strength method (DSM) has been advanced recently. However, the DSM has not been adequately evaluated for calculating the strength of compression members (such as tubular, plain channel and I-sections) consisting of only stiffened and unstiffened elements, without either lip stiffener or intermediate stiffener. These members experience interaction of only local and overall buckling before failure. In this paper, results of a study on the suitability of DSM to evaluate the compressive strength of plain channel, I and rectangular tubular members is presented. Extensive experimental data in literature and additional data generated using currently accepted effective width method (based on better estimate of local buckling stress evaluated considering element interaction), are used in this study. It is found that DSM can be used to evaluate strength of such members also. {\textcopyright} 2010 ASCE.

Evaluation of Direct Strength Method for CFS Compression Members without Stiffeners

The increase in privately funded infrastructure construction in India had compelled project owners to demand highly compressed project schedules due to political risks and early revenue generation. As a result, many of the contracts are based on EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) contract enabling the contractor to plan and control the EPC phases. Sole responsibility for the three phases has facilitated the use of innovative approaches such as fast-track construction and concurrent engineering in order to minimize project duration. As a part of a research study to improve design processes, the first author spent a year as an observer in two design projects which was done by a leading EPC contractor in India. Both projects required accelerated design and fast-track construction. The first project involved the detailed design of a coal handling unit for a power plant and second the preliminary phase of a large airport design project. The research team had the mandate to analyze the design process and suggest changes to make it more efficient. On the first project, detailed data on the design/drawing workflow was collected and analyzed. The paper presents the analysis of the data identifying the bottlenecks in the process and compares the analysis results with the perceptions of the design team. On the second project, the overall organizational structure for coordinating the interfaces between the design processes was evaluated. The paper presents a structured method to organize the interface and interactions between the various design disciplines. The details of the method proposed, implementation issues and outcomes of implementation are also discussed

Analysis of Workflow on Design Projects in India

Planning methods such as CPM and PERT cannot model the iterative details of design processes. It has been demonstrated that the Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM) is an effective method to model iterative process. However, formulating the DSM on large construction projects, using current methodologies is challenging. To address this challenge, a structured methodology called Design Interface Management System "diMs" has been proposed. As the documents and interactions required for implementing the "diMs" process are voluminous, support of an IT based tool is essential. This paper presents the design and the development of the tool. It includes the design of class structure, relational database and communication engine using object oriented concepts. In addition, the design of user interface which consists of a set of dynamic web pages is also explained. The paper also illustrates the usage of the tool for the design of a glass factory and discusses the utility of the tool in assisting design interface management. {\textcopyright} 2009 Elsevier B.V. A web-based system for design interface management of construction projects

This paper presents a stochastic meshfree method for solving boundary. -value problems in damage mechanics under elasto. -plastic conditions. Isotropic ductile damage evolution law is used to model the coupled elasto. -plastic damage growth. Uncertainty associated with initial damage in materials is considered as random field. Moving least squares shape function method and Karhunen Loève expansion method are used for random field discretization. Statistical parameters of the response quantities are computed using perturbation method. The proposed method involves a new stochastic stress update procedure to solve the nonlinear equations in terms of discretized random variables arising from perturbation of equilibrium equations system. Numerical examples comprising of one and two dimensional problems are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of proposed method. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

Application of Microbial Fuel Cell in Waste Water Treatment

Dependency structure matrix (DSM) concepts have been applied effectively to represent and manage complex design processes. However, the author's attempts to implement the concepts on large construction projects faced limitations. The key limitation was that the identification of elements for activity DSM at the appropriate level of abstraction required significant levels of expertise. As drawings are well-defined entities that are directly identifiable by the design team, this paper proposes that drawing DSM (DDSM) be used to manage the design process. Further, as drawing production is a complex task containing many subactivities, a structured method is required to identify the dependencies between the drawings. Based on a systems approach, a three-stage structured methodology to decompose the project and identify the drawing interfaces is developed. The conceptual details of this methodology are explained and the steps are illustrated using a generic example. The paper also presents the application of the methodology to an airport project and discusses the results obtained as well as the necessary future improvements. {\textcopyright} 2009 Earthscan.
