Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Manganese(I)-Catalyzed C−H Activation/Diels–Alder/retro-Diels–Alder Domino Alkyne Annulation featuring Transformable Pyridines

The widespread applications of substituted diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPPs) call for the development of efficient methods for their modular assembly. Herein, we present a π-expansion strategy for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by C−H activation in a sustainable fashion. Thus, twofold C−H/N-H activations were accomplished by versatile ruthenium(II)carboxylate catalysis, providing step-economical access to diversely decorated fluorogenic DPPs that was merged with late-stage palladium-catalyzed C−H arylation on the thus-assembled DPP motif. © 2019 The Authors. π-Extended Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons by Sustainable Alkyne Annulations through Double C−H/N−H Activation

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss about evaluating the integrals involving B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI), in wavelet finite element formulations, using Gauss Quadrature. Design/methodology/approach: In the proposed scheme, background cells are placed over each BSWI element and Gauss quadrature rule is defined for each of these cells. The nodal discretization used for BSWI WFEM element is independent to the selection of number of background cells used for the integration process. During the analysis, background cells of various lengths are used for evaluating the integrals for various combination of order and resolution of BSWI scaling functions. Numerical examples based on one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) plane elasto-statics are solved. Problems on beams based on Euler Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theory under different boundary conditions are also examined. The condition number and sparseness of the formulated stiffness matrices are analyzed. Findings: It is found that to form a well-conditioned stiffness matrix, the support domain of every wavelet scaling function should possess sufficient number of integration points. The results are analyzed and validated against the existing analytical solutions. Numerical examples demonstrate that the accuracy of displacements and stresses is dependent on the size of the background cell and number of Gauss points considered per background cell during the analysis. Originality/value: The current paper gives the details on implementation of Gauss Quadrature scheme, using a background cell-based approach, for evaluating the integrals involved in BSWI-based wavelet finite element method, which is missing in the existing literature. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.

A background cell-based numerical integration for B-spline wavelet on the interval finite element method

Artificial composites inspired from biological materials such as nacre and bone has a staggered structure of hard inclusions surrounded by a soft interface. These composites possess an excellent combination of strength, toughness and stiffness. These properties depends on a critical value of overlap ratio of inclusions, and hence is one of major parameters in the design of bio-inspired composites. Randomness in material and geometrical parameters could exist in such composites. In this work, the randomness in various parameters are considered, and using probabilistic methods, the critical overlap ratio is found out. This is done for two dimensional, and three dimensional inclusions. For the three dimensional case, due to unavailability of the analytical solution, high dimensional model representation technique in conjunction with finite element analysis is done to find out the critical overlap ratio. To determine the probability of failure for two dimensional as well as three dimensional cases, Monte Carlo Simulation is used. Finally, based on the study a factor of safety is proposed for the critical stress intensity factor which could be used in design to account for uncertainties in the various parameters. © 2019

Design of a bio-inspired composite using probabilistic fracture mechanics

We demonstrate the use of dispersed graphene oxide (DGO) as dye adsorbents for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. Reduction in absorbance of MB solution in the presence of DGO is studied using optical spectroscopy. A threshold concentration of 0.125 ppm of DGO is found to be required for effective degradation of 1ppm MB solution in water. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. BODIPY-Labeled Cyclobutanes by Secondary C(sp3)−H Arylations for Live-Cell Imaging

In this paper we define and explore properties of mixed multiplicities of (not necessarily Noetherian) filtrations of mR-primary ideals in a Noetherian local ring R, generalizing the classical theory for mR-primary ideals. We construct a real polynomial whose coefficients give the mixed multiplicities. This polynomial exists if and only if the dimension of the nilradical of the completion of R is less than the dimension of R, which holds, for instance, if R is excellent and reduced. We show that many of the classical theorems for mixed multiplicities of mR-primary ideals hold for filtrations, including the famous Minkowski inequalities of Teissier, and of Rees and Sharp. © 2019 American Mathematical Society

Fractured narratives of psy disciplines and the LGBTQIA+ rights movement in India: A critical examination

Application of deep holes is extensively found in the oil and gas industry to manufacture downhole equipment. These deep holes are fabricated in drill collars to deploy delicate sensors downhole for obtaining vital information like temperature, pressure and other geo-physical data from the bottom of the hole. High temperature and corrosion resistant materials like Inconel 718 is often used for drill collars to shield these sensitive communication equipment from the hostile downhole environment. Gundrilling is an established hole making method known for drilling precise and high aspect-ratio (AR>10) holes in conventional materials such as steels, cast iron and aluminium alloys etc. However, gundrilling of Inconel 718 offers unprecedented challenges like excessive tool wear, hole straightness deviation due to poor thermal conductivity and work-hardening tendency of the alloy. Moreover, as the drilling depth increases the deviation is further exacerbated due to the low rigidity of long gundrill shafts. The present study in the Phase 1 introduces a dynamic model using multispan Euler-Bernoulli beam theory to evaluate the effectiveness of coolant pressure and rotation speed during deep hole fabrication in Inconel 718. In addition, experimental investigations have been conducted to validate the model by studying the effects of coolant pressure and rotation speed on straightness of the fabricated holes. It was found that the straightness deviation was 0.37 mm corresponding to 137.89 bar and 1600 rpm coolant pressure and rotation speed respectively. In Phase 2, a non-contacting EDM process was used to fabricate a straight guide hole followed by conventional gundrilling (CG) with optimum pressure (137.89 bar) and speed (1600 rpm) obtained from the Phase 1 trials. The experimental results revealed that the thrust force reduced drastically from 800 N (CG) to 250 N (EDMG). Moreover, a significant improvement in both rake wear and flank wear was also observed. Finally, a straightness deviation of 0.19 mm was recorded for a maximum drilling depth of 350 mm which is 48.65% lesser than CG. From the study, it was found that this novel EDMG process improved the drilling capability of Inconel 718 by reducing the thrust force generated, enhancing tool life and minimizing the straightness deviation. © 2019
