Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene, characterized by the clinical triad of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC), hypoparathyroidism, and adrenal insufficiency. CMC can be complicated by systemic candidiasis or oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and may lead to death. The role of chronic Candida infection in the etiopathogenesis of oral SCC is unclear. Long-term use of fluconazole has led to the emergence of Candida albicans strains with decreased susceptibility to azoles. CMC is associated with an impaired Th17 cell response; however, it remains unclear whether decreased serum IL-17 and IL-22 levels are related to a defect in cytokine production or to neutralizing autoantibodies resulting from mutations in the AIRE gene. © 2007 - 2018 Frontiers Media S.A.

In the light of the ongoing prioritisation of Hindi by the central government, the projection of Hindi as the “self” is problematic for several reasons. Three “self–other” binaries are discussed in this regard: Hindi–Hindu as “self,” Urdu–Muslim as “other”; Sanskrit-laden Hindi favouring upper caste Hindus as “self,” vernacular Hindi dialects often represented by the lower castes and classes as “other”; and finally Hindi as the epitome of “desi self,” English as “foreign other.”. © 2018 Economic and Political Weekly. On the denseness of minimum attaining operators

Let A be a complex unital Banach algebra, a∈A, n∈Z+ and ϵ&gt;0. The (n,ϵ)-pseudospectrum Λn,ϵ(a) of a is defined as Λn,ϵ(a):=σ(a)∪{λ∉σ(a):‖(λ−a)−2n‖1/2n≥[Formula presented]}. Here σ(a) denotes the spectrum of a. The usual pseudospectrum Λϵ(a) of a is a special case of this, namely Λ0,ϵ(a). It is proved that (n,ϵ)-pseudospectrum approximates the closed ϵ-neighbourhood of spectrum for large n. Further, it has been shown that (n,ϵ)-pseudospectrum has no isolated points, has a finite number of connected components and each component contains an element from σ(a). The (n,ϵ)-pseudospectrum of an element of a Banach algebra

A new finite difference scheme based on the higher-order compact technique is presented for solving problems with complex immersed interfaces in arbitrary dimensions. The scheme is designed for general interface problems in which the coefficients, the source term, the solution and its normal flux may be discontinuous across the interface. The originality of the scheme lies in the use of additional values at interfacial points (points at which grid lines intersect the interface) as nodes in the stencil, which allows straightforward use of the standard finite difference approximations. Appropriate interpolation techniques are used on both sides of the interface to determine the interfacial values. Numerical tests are carried out to validate the scheme for solving elliptic equations in both two and three dimensions, which show that the proposed scheme has overall second-order accuracy. The scheme thus developed is also applied to solve incompressible, two-dimensional Stokes flows. In this process, we compare our computed results with the results obtained from existing schemes and in most of the cases, our scheme is found to produce relatively better results.

Solving immersed interface problems using a new interfacial points-based finite difference approach

Forced convection from a heated rotationally oscillating circular cylinder placed in a uniform cross flow of constant properties fluid is investigated. The two-dimensional governing equations of flow motion and energy are solved numerically on non-uniform polar grids using a higher order compact (HOC) formulation. The flow and thermal fields are mainly influenced by Reynolds number, Re, Prandtl number, Pr, maximum angular velocity of the cylinder, $\alpha$m and the frequency ratio, f/f0, which represents the ratio between the oscillation frequency, f and the natural vortex shedding frequency, f0. The numerical simulations are performed at Re=200,Pr=0.5-1.0,$\alpha$m∈[0.5,4.0] and f/f0∈[0.5,3.0]. The resulting lock-on phenomena behind the cylinder is detected and thermal field is determined. Comparisons with previous numerical and experimental results verify the accuracy and the reliability of the present study. Variations in heat transfer coefficients within the lock-on ranges are investigated to build a connection between the heat transfer and the lock-on regimes.

A numerical study of forced convection from an isothermal cylinder performing rotational oscillations in a uniform stream

The high heat transfer rates from impinging flame jets and plumes are extensively used in many industrial applications. Comprehensive literature review suggests that the characterization of flame impingement is done primarily by the measurement of heat flux onto the target surface. The use of in-situ probes limits the spatial resolution of the measurement. For a diffusion flame, radiation cannot be neglected and it is therefore necessary to determine the convective and radiative heat flux components to quantify the thermal boundary condition to the impingement surface. For determining the heat transfer characteristics of impinging diffusion flames, the target surface is impinged by a methane diffusion flame from the bottom and is simultaneously cooled from the top by air jets of different Reynolds number. At steady state, one dimensional energy balance across the impingement surface provides an equation with the three unknowns being the heat transfer coefficient of the flame jet, the reference temperature and the emissivity of the gas/flame. By keeping the flame jet impingement conditions same and varying the air jet impingement on the top surface, five different forms of the energy balance equation is obtained. A minimization technique, that makes use of the Nelder-Mead algorithm, is developed to solve for the over-determined system of equations. The obtained results are compared with the slope method that determines the effective heat transfer coefficient and the reference temperature. The impingement surface is modeled in FLUENT and the experimentally obtained heat transfer coefficient of the flame jet, the reference temperature and the emissivity of the gas/flame is provided as the boundary condition to numerically determine the surface temperature. For validation purpose, the impingement surface material and thickness is changed and the experimentally obtained and numerically determined wall temperatures are compared. It is demonstrated that the minimization technique is capable of separating the convective and radiative heat transfer components from impinging diffusion flames. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Separation of heat transfer components from impinging methane diffusion flames

The flame jet impingement on curved surfaces finds applications in various direct flame heating situations. The design of heating equipment demands the estimation of the surface temperature and of the convective heat flux to the target surface at steady state for various impingement parameters. The characterisation of flame jets in terms of Nusselt number and effectiveness aids the designer to numerically estimate the steady state surface temperature and heat flux by specifying the convective boundary condition with spatial distribution of reference temperature. The present study reports the heat transfer characteristics of single flame jet impinging on convex and concave surfaces of a semi-cylindrical target plate. The effects of mixture Reynolds number, equivalence ratio, curvature ratio and burner to plate spacing on the heat transfer behavior are investigated. The uniformity of the heat flux distribution and the overall thermal efficiency are determined from the local heat flux distributions. The flow fields along the curvilinear axes influence the overall thermal performance. The concave surface produces higher thermal efficiency and better uniformity of heat flux over the impingement surface as compared with the convex surface. © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS

Heat transfer investigations on methane-air premixed flame jet exiting from a circular nozzle and impinging over semi-cylindrical surfaces

Road network resilience is emerging as a vital planning criterion. Yet, unique and cross-comparable indices for road network resilience are scarce. One of the recent approaches determines resilience as a unique network attribute based on the system travel time at an upper envelope of operable disruptions. This upper envelope represents ‘critical states’ (or tipping points) of capacity disruptions. Critical state gives a bounding capacity degradation vector, beyond which the network cannot wholly cater to the origin–destination demand even under the best possible traffic assignment. However, solving the critical state identification problem (CSP) on real-scale networks has remained a challenge. This paper presents a weighted fictitious play algorithm to fill this gap. CSP has been previously envisaged as a two-player game between a network attacker and a network defender. Here, we make the players play iteratively, and make them learn from the competitor’s past strategies so that they converge to an equilibrium. We illustrate the method on a simple toy network, and solve it on different real-life networks. Resilience of the Anaheim city network was computed in 42.8 min., considerably outperforming—both in problem-size and solution-time—the previous, two-space genetic algorithm. © National Academy of Sciences: Transportation Research Board 2018.
