Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

This paper deals with a discrete-time Markov jump linear system with a non-homogeneous Markov Chain. In particular, we consider the situation when the transition probability matrix of the non-homogeneous Markov Chain is varying in an interval, and obtained a sufficient condition for the mean square stability of the proposed system. © 2013 EUCA.

Mean square stability of non-homogeneous Markov jump linear systems using interval analysis

Gd2O3-based metal-insulator-metal capacitors have been characterized with single layer (Gd2O3) and bilayer (Gd2O3/Eu2O3 and Eu 2O3/Gd2O3) stacks for analog and DRAM applications. Although single layer Gd2O3 capacitors provide highest capacitance density (15 fF/μm2), they suffer from high leakage current density, poor capacitance density-voltage linearity, and reliability. The stacked dielectrics help to reduce leakage current density (1.2×10-5 A/cm2 and 2.7 × 10-5 A/cm2 for Gd2O3/Eu2O3 and Eu2O3/Gd2O3, respectively, at -1 V), improve quadratic voltage coefficient of capacitance (331 ppm/V2 and 374 ppm/V2 for Gd2O3/Eu2O 3 and Eu2O3/Gd2O3, respectively, at 1 MHz), and improve reliability, with a marginal reduction in capacitance density. This is attributed to lower trap heights as determined from Poole-Frenkel conduction mechanism, and lower defect density as determined from electrode polarization model. © 2013 IEEE.

Semipositone problems with falling zeros on exterior domains

Thermodynamic properties of the troposphere, particularly water vapor content and temperature, change in response to physical mechanisms, including frictional drag, evaporation, transpiration, heat transfer, pollutant emission and flow modification due to terrain. The planetary boundary layer (PBL) is characterized by a greater rate of change in the thermodynamic state of the atmosphere than at higher altitudes in the troposphere. Measurement of these changes, such as large horizontal gradients in water vapor and vertical profiles, provides very important data for improved weather prediction. Sensitivity studies for severe storm prediction indicate that a lack of accurate observations of water vapor densities throughout the lower troposphere limits the forecasting of severe storms. Therefore, measurements of water vapor density using microwave radiometers may help to improve accuracy of severe weather prediction. The HUMidity EXperiment 2011 (HUMEX11) was conducted to validate remote sensing of tropospheric humidity using ground-based scanning Compact Microwave Radiometers for Humidity profiling (CMR-H). Two microwave radiometers were scanned to sample an atmospheric volume at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) Climate Research Facility. Scientific objectives of HUMEX11 were to measure water vapor profiles in the lower troposphere with high vertical and temporal resolution and to track rapid variations in water vapor in the lowest 3 km of the troposphere. The principal reason for conducting the campaign at the SGP Climate Research Facility was the ability to compare the water vapor profile results with other measurements like ARM microwave radiometers and Raman lidar. The Raman lidar water vapor profiles were used as truth for comparison with the retrieved profiles. The study also focuses on optimizing the size of the background data set to minimize retrieval error as well as varying the vertical resolution to increase sensitivity to gradients in the water vapor profile. Water vapor profiles were retrieved at various vertical resolutions ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 km. The background data set for the retrieval consisted of radiosondes launched from the DOE ARM SGP site four times daily during the experiment. The accuracy and error statistics of the retrieved profiles is compared for different background data set sizes and different vertical resolutions.

Measurement of Rapid Variations in Lower-Tropospheric Humidity Profiles Using Ground-Based Scanning Compact Microwave Radiometers

This paper presents an indirect adaptive control method for an autonomous underwater vehicle-manipulator system (UVMS) based on an <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/extended-kalman-filter">extended Kalman filter</a> (EKF). This method overcomes the disadvantages of existing disturbance observers and direct adaptive control schemes, which are based on <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/linear-systems">linear system</a> techniques and regressor-based techniques. The proposed control scheme can be applied to UVMSs for various purposes such as payload compensation, interaction effects compensation, underwater current or <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/external-disturbance">external disturbance</a> compensation, reaction compensation, and independent system control. The performance of the proposed controller was demonstrated numerically by payload compensation, where it compensated for the reaction effects experienced during a manipulation task, and disturbance (underwater current) compensation in a UVMS with a six degrees of freedom (DOF) underwater vehicle and a 3-DOF underwater manipulator.

Indirect adaptive control of an autonomous underwater vehicle-manipulator system for underwater manipulation tasks

Maintaining the satisfactory QoS, synchronization is a big challenge to the researcher in the&nbsp;field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). In this paper we address a multimedia synchronization issue called multipoint synchronization which is necessary in some distributed collaborative application like teleteaching, teleconferencing etc.,involving the play out process of same media stream at different receivers at the same time to achieve fairness among the receivers. We found the in capability of existing petri net to model the above synchronization issue. Some new features are added in existing petri nets to increase its modeling and analyzing power, called self modifying stochastic color petri net (SMSCPN).Then the synchronization issue is modeled with the help of SMSCPN and an generalized algorithm is proposed to achieving multipoint synchronization in IP network. Also some metrics are defined that can measurethe performance of the proposed synchronization algorithm.

Multipoint MultimediaSynchronization: A Petri Net Based Approach

In case of cut slope made in cemented soil or stiff clay, failure is to be expected due to the detachment of bonds (brittle fracture). This field scenario could be simulated by performing triaxial extension test on these types of soils under low effective stress state. This paper presents the results of a series of triaxial compression and extension tests performed on artificially prepared cemented soil and remolded clay in the low stress range. Testing revealed that the mode of failure for cemented soil is different in compression (shear failure) and extension (brittle failure). For cemented soil, shear resistance in extension is found to be less dependent on the normal stress and the resistance is mostly due to the cementation bonds. But in remolded clay, shear resistance is found to be proportional to the effective normal stress at failure. Therefore the use of shear parameters based on compression tests may not be apposite for the stability analysis of cut slopes made in cemented soil. In such cases, failure criteria may be better taken as the difference in principal stresses.

Guidelines for Determining the Capacity of D-Regions with Premature Concrete Deterioration of ASR/DEF

The compressive strength of cold-formed steel (CFS) lipped channel (LC) members may be governed by yielding, local, distortional, or overall buckling and any possible interaction among these modes. The direct strength method (DSM) has been advanced recently for evaluating the strength of CFS LC beams and columns. Although the DSM is an improvement over other methods in terms of simplicity and accuracy, further improvement by minor modification to the DSM is possible if all the parameters that affect the strength of such members is properly accounted for and understood. In this study, the DSM equations for evaluating the strength of members that fail after experiencing only local buckling are discussed. The strength of such members, according to the DSM, is a function of only the ratio of yield strength of the section (Py) to the elastic local buckling load (Pcrℓ) (also equal to the reciprocal of square of the nondimensional local buckling slenderness ratio, 1/$\lambda$ℓ2). This study indicates that the relative area of the stocky elements of the cross section, which are less vulnerable to elastic local buckling, also influences the strength of such members. Using the experimental results available in the literature and the finite-element analysis data generated in this study, the behavior and strength of stub LC compression members experiencing only local buckling before failure by yielding are evaluated. Simple modifications to the currently available DSM equations are suggested to more accurately evaluate the strength of such members. {\textcopyright} 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Design Strength of Locally Buckling Stub-Lipped Channel Columns

Various base isolation schemes have been implemented to isolate a structure from intense base excitations. In this paper, performance of a friction sliding bearing with nonlinear restoring mechanism is studied on a three-storey steel moment-resisting frame building under varying seismic hazard conditions. The performance of the proposed system is compared with that of the fixed-base and with only the friction sliding bearing. For this purpose, the effectiveness of the proposed isolation system is evaluated in terms of the residual displacement, peak inter-storey drift and the maximum base displacement. It is envisioned that a system as proposed here, if optimized for a target hazard situation, will result in a cost-effective solution. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
