Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

An important metallurgical difficulty in arc welding of high-strength aluminum alloys is formation of solidification cracking. In this work, an attempt is made to reduce the solidification cracking in welding of aluminum alloys through vibratory treatment. The material used for the investigation is AA2014 aluminum alloy, which is highly prone to solidification cracking. Vibratory treatment was carried out in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 3700 Hz. Weldments made with and without vibratory treatment were compared using weld cracking tests and other characterization tests such as microstructural analysis. The test results show that by applying vibratory treatment, solidification cracking can be largely controlled in arc welding. © EDP Sciences, 2011.

Studies on the effect of vibratory treatment on reduction of solidification cracking in AA2014 aluminum alloys

In diagnosing mechanical faults of rotating machinery, it is very important to know the vibration feature of the machine with various forms of fault. A rotor system with fault is generally a complicated non-linear vibrating system. Its vibration is in a very complex form. Rotating machinery is very popular in industrial applications. Most of the mechanical failures are due to vibrations. It is more so in case of rotating machinery. Main cause of vibrations is faults in the rotating systems like unbalance, looseness, etc. In this paper Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are used to identify unbalance and looseness in rotor bearing system. Here it is considered as two class classification problem. Experiments are conducted to collect the vibration data in both horizontal and vertical directions, from the rotating system. Statistical features are extracted from the vibration data and fed to neural networks for classifying the unbalance and looseness. These results are useful for making maintenance decision.

Identification of unbalance and looseness in rotor bearing systems using neural networks

An important rotor fault, which can lead to catastrophic failure if undetected, is fatigue crack in the shaft. Cracked rotating shafts have been the subject of studies and investigations for more than four decades, with some review papers published over this period. The aim of this paper is to discuss very recent developments of the research on cracked rotors, including the inverse problem of the identification of cracks in rotating machinery. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011.

We define a new metric on the set of all closed linear operators between Hilbert spaces and investigate its properties. In particular, we show that the set of all closed operators with a closed range is an open subset of the set of all closed operators and the map T → T† is an isometry in this metric. Prepared from the collective plasma of several thousand people, therapeutic intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) consists mostly of human polyspecific IgG. In addition to its use in primary and secondary immune deficiencies, IVIg is used in the treatment of several rheumatic conditions, including Kawasaki disease, dermatomyositis and antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-positive vasculitis. In these diseases, IVIg therapy generally involves the use of 2 g/kg administered over either 2 or 5 consecutive days. However, dosage regimens have not been thoroughly explored, and indications for IVIg in most rheumatic diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, polymyositis and catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome, derive from its off-label usage. Randomized clinical trials are warranted to support the evidence-based use of IVIg, and to identify the ideal administration protocols to maximize the benefits of what is a limited resource. Further research to improve the therapeutic application of IVIg relies essentially on the conception of next-generation immunoglobulin preparations and optimization of combined therapies with immunomodulatory drugs and biologic agents. © 2011 Macmillan Publishers Limited. Variations in intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) products are a common feature. In this report, we compared the effect of different IVIg products on IL-17 production by human Th17 cells. We found that irrespective of products, IgGs of all IVIg preparations were equally effective in inhibiting the production of IL-17A from Th17 cells. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Comparison of different IVIg preparations on IL-17 production by human Th17 cells

Dendritic cells (DCs) as sentinels of the immune system are important for eliciting both primary and secondary immune responses to a plethora of microbial pathogens. Cooperative stimulation of a complex set of pattern-recognition receptors, including TLR2 and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors on DCs, acts as a rate-limiting factor in determining the initiation and mounting of the robust immune response. It underscores the need for "decoding"these multiple receptor interactions. In this study, we demonstrate that TLR2 and NOD receptors cooperatively regulate functional maturation of human DCs. Intriguingly, synergistic stimulation of TLR2 and NOD receptors renders enhanced refractoriness to TGF-β- or CTLA-4-mediated impairment of human DC maturation. Signaling perturbation data suggest that NOTCH1-PI3K signaling dynamics assume critical importance in TLR2- and NOD receptor-mediated surmounting of CTLA-4- and TGF-β-suppressed maturation of human DCs. Interestingly, the NOTCH1-PI3K signaling axis holds the capacity to regulate DC functions by virtue of PKCδ-MAPK-dependent activation of NF-κB. This study provides mechanistic and functional insights into TLR2- and NOD receptor-mediated regulation of DC functions and unravels NOTCH1-PI3K as a signaling cohort for TLR2 and NOD receptors. These findings serve in building a conceptual foundation for the design of improved strategies for adjuvants and immunotherapies against infectious diseases. © 2011 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.
