Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

The objective of this study was to investigate the rutting performance of gap-graded aggregate gradations in conjunction with the effect of asphalt binder. Two gap-graded aggregate gradations recommended by Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT: gradation A), Texas DOT (gradation B), and one newly proposed gradation (gradation C) were considered in this study. Wheel-tracking test was performed at 60 °C on ten asphalt mixtures, and rut depth was statistically analyzed using 23 factorial designs at 95% confidence interval. Main effect analysis showed that gradation C offered the highest rutting resistance followed by gradation B and A. Though the gradation A demonstrated a reduction in rutting resistance with increasing binder content, gradations B and C were less sensitive to variation in the binder content. Rutting characteristics estimated at different stages revealed that permanent deformation incurred in gradation A developed rapidly until 75% and then retarded to a stable rate. In the case of gradations B and C, there was a marginal difference in the permanent deformation at various stages. Further, gap-graded asphalt mixtures prepared with gradations B and C at both (OBC − 1) and OBC % showed better performance than conventional dense-graded (DG) asphalt mix. Overall, it was concluded that gap-graded mixture can be expected to outperform the DG mix when designed with appropriate mix parameters. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Investigation on rutting performance of gap-graded asphalt mixtures: Study on aggregate gradation

The objective of this study was to qualitatively measure the cracking mechanism of asphalt-rubber gap-graded (AR-Gap) mixtures and compare the methodical approach proposed in this research with the conventional fatigue process. As part of experimentation plan, dynamic a semi-circular bending (SCB) test was conducted on 27 AR-Gap mixtures with varying mix parameters, including, binder type, binder content, and aggregate gradation. Fatigue life (Nf) obtained from the dynamic SCB test was analyzed from a statistical viewpoint, and key relationships that potentially contribute to fatigue performance were identified. Later, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) was used to study the cracking mechanism of AR-Gap mixtures. CMOD data were analyzed using the Francken model that theorizes the accumulated damage as a three-stage failure. Further, fatigue tertiary life (Nft) was determined on the premise of structural deterioration obtained from the three-stage failure process. The fatigue disparity factor (ξ), the ratio of Nf to Nft for each asphalt mix was estimated to compare fatigue performance indices. The score of ξ for all the mixtures exceeded 50%, which was indicative of longer crack initiation and crack propagation phase over the third stage of the fatigue cracking mechanism. Overall, the fatigue mechanism was explained through the conceptualization of the three-stage fatigue process through various intrinsic properties of AR-Gap mixtures. © National Academy of Sciences: Transportation Research Board 2020.

Flexural Fatigue Modelling of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete

Brazil is one of the largest exporters of cattle meat production. Most of this production is under pasture areas, with different levels of livestock and field management. Remotely sensed images could be interesting tools to detect distinct temporal and spatial patterns of these systems. In this context, classification algorithms have been proposed to use information from satellite images to map different land covers. The Time-Weighted Dynamic Time Warping (TWDTW) is an algorithm that has the advantage of working well with datasets with enough amounts of temporal information and seasonality patterns. In the present work, the TWDTW was performed to classify pasture managements in farms located in Western region of São Paulo State in Brazil for the years 2017 and 2018, as a primary study. It was used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series images from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer - MODIS sensor (products MOD13Q1 and MYD13Q) with 250 meters of spatial resolution. In classifications for the years 2017 and 2018, it was observed a predominance of traditional pasture. Total areas of degraded and traditional pasture were very similar between 2017 and 2018. The year of 2017 showed higher spatial distribution of intensified pastures than year 2018. The classification achieved satisfying results with complete accuracy in validation. The information collected from field visits were important to analyse general aspects of the results. Therefore, in this pilot study TWDTW algorithm demonstrated to have potential in differentiating classes of pasture management. Next steps will be to explor e the possibilities to classify pasture systems in large areas. © 2020 IEEE.

Mapping Pasture Areas in Western Region of SÃO Paulo State, Brazil

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics caused by slowly taking a quasiperiodic Hamiltonian across its quantum critical point. The special quasiperiodic Hamiltonian that we study here has two different types of critical lines belonging to two different universality classes, one of them being the well known quantum Ising universality class. In this paper, we verify the Kibble Zurek scaling which predicts a power law scaling of the density of defects generated as a function of the rate of variation of the Hamiltonian. The exponent of this power law is related to the equilibrium critical exponents associated with the critical point crossed. We show that the power-law behavior is indeed obeyed when the two types of critical lines are crossed, with the exponents that are correctly predicted by Kibble Zurek scaling. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA Medialab srl.

Adiabatic dynamics of quasiperiodic transverse Ising model

Recent advances in wearable sensor technologies offer new opportunities for improving dietary adherence. However, despite their tremendous promise, the potential of wearable chemical sensors for guiding personalized nutrition solutions has not been reported. Herein, we present an epidermal biosensor aimed at following the dynamics of sweat vitamin C after the intake of vitamin C pills and fruit juices. Such skin-worn noninvasive electrochemical detection of sweat vitamin C has been realized by immobilizing the enzyme ascorbate oxidase (AAOx) on flexible printable tattoo electrodes and monitoring changes in the vitamin C level through changes in the reduction current of the oxygen cosubstrate. The flexible vitamin C tattoo patch was fabricated on a polyurethane substrate and combined with a localized iontophoretic sweat stimulation system along with amperometric cathodic detection of the oxygen depletion during the enzymatic reaction. The enzyme biosensor offers a highly selective response compared to the common direct (nonenzymatic) voltammetric measurements, with no effect on electroactive interfering species such as uric acid or acetaminophen. Temporal vitamin C profiles in sweat are demonstrated using different subjects taking varying amounts of commercial vitamin C pills or vitamin C-rich beverages. The dynamic rise and fall of such vitamin C sweat levels is thus demonstrated with no interference from other sweat constituents. Differences in such dynamics among the individual subjects indicate the potential of the epidermal biosensor for personalized nutrition solutions. The flexible tattoo patch displayed mechanical resiliency to multiple stretching and bending deformations. In addition, the AAOx biosensor is shown to be useful as a disposable strip for the rapid in vitro detection of vitamin C in untreated raw saliva and tears following pill or juice intake. These results demonstrate the potential of wearable chemical sensors for noninvasive nutrition status assessments and tracking of nutrient uptake toward detecting and correcting nutritional deficiencies, assessing adherence to vitamin intake, and supporting dietary behavior change. © 2020 American Chemical Society.

Epidermal Enzymatic Biosensors for Sweat Vitamin C: Toward Personalized Nutrition

Malaria is a parasitic disease which takes approximately half a million lives every year. The unicellular parasites are transmitted by mosquitoes and mainly affect vascular blood flow by invading red blood cells (RBCs). The pathogenicity of malaria primarily results from substantial changes in the stiffness of infected RBCs and their ability to adhere to endothelial cells and other circulating blood cells, leading to a substantial disruption of normal blood circulation and inflammation of the vascular endothelium. Multiscale modeling of malaria has proved to contribute significantly to the understanding of this devastating disease. In particular, modeling on the level of single infected RBCs allows quantification of their mechanics, cytoadherence, and individual as well as collective behavior in blood flow. Recent modeling advances in this direction are discussed.We show how computational models inmalaria are validated and used for the interpretation of experimental observations or the establishment of new physical hypotheses. Such computational models have a strong potential to elucidate a number of physical mechanisms relevant for malaria and to aid in the development of novel diagnostic tools and treatment strategies. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Multiscale Modeling of Malaria-Infected Red Blood Cells

This work reports the characterization of AA6061/SiC/FA hybrid composites joined using friction stir welding (FSW). FSW was conducted by employing various tool pin profiles such as straight cylindrical (SC), tapered conical, straight square (SS) and cylindrical threaded. Microstructure and mechanical characteristics of joints were investigated using these tool pin profiles. Microstructure study of the weld joints was carried out through scanning electron microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The results show equiaxed distribution of grains in the nugget zone. EBSD analysis indicates that the average grain size reduces to 3 µm after FSW with the presence of high-angle grain boundaries. Higher joint efficiency (85%) is obtained for joints obtained using SS tool pin compared to their counterparts, and SC tool yields minimum joint efficiency (77%). Overall 8% enhancement of the joint efficiency is achieved using SS tool pin profile. © 2020, The Indian Institute of Metals - IIM.
