Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Statistical Evaluation of Crumb Rubber Modification Procedure in Asphalt Binder Modification

The objective of this study was to conceptualize and develop energy-based algorithm to characterize the comprehensive rheological behaviour of different asphalt binders with and without rubber modification. The scope included advanced asphalt binder characterization and analyses using viscoelastic parametric relationships. A total of thirteen different asphalt binders covering over 5000 data points were utilized, including: three virgin binders, one industrially available crumb rubber modified (CRM), and nine laboratory prepared CRM binders with varying dosages. Dissipated energy parameter tanδ was estimated, which helped in assessing the rutting resistance of asphalt binders. CRM binders produced flatter tanδ master curves and with lower magnitudes compared to the virgin binders indicative of higher rutting resistance with reduced energy dissipation-temperature susceptibility. Further, Weibull distribution function modeling on Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR) test data quantified the contributions of various viscoelastic components of the asphalt binders. Rheological modeling and dissipated energy methodologies conceptualized as part of the study indicated that rubber inclusions in asphalt binder would aid in the improvement of the materials’ rutting resistance. Overall, it is envisaged that the algorithm developed in this research pertinent to asphalt binders’ advanced rheological characterization would further the state-of-the-art in designing rut-resistant asphalts. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Conceptualization of permanent deformation characteristics of rubber modified asphalt binders: Energy-based algorithm and rheological modeling

Complex modulus of an asphalt mixture constitutes two components: E' representing the ability of the mixture to store energy (elastic behavior), and E" reflecting the capacity of the material to dissipate energy (viscous behavior). The main objective of this study was to develop predictive equations for the two components, E' and E", to better quantify and assess the performance of conventional and modified mixtures alternate to standard laboratory testing. The dataset used in this effort encompassed 163 conventional dense graded asphalt concrete (DGAC), 13 asphalt-rubber asphalt concrete (ARAC) gap-graded, and 9 asphalt-rubber friction course (ARFC) open-graded mixes covering 5,550 data points. Aggregate gradation, binder, and volumetric property parameters were used as predictor variables. Squared-error optimization mathematical techniques were employed in developing predictive models. The statistical goodness of fit measures of E' and E" predictive models were very good to excellent. Validation results of the predictive models reflected effectiveness in reproducing observed values with goodness-of-fit measures in the domain of fair to excellent. Sensitivity performance analyses were also carried out to demonstrate the performance of asphalt mixtures with respect to different material properties. © 2016 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Investigation on Creep and Recovery Behaviour of Rubber Modified Asphalt Binders

The objective of this research paper was to present the rheological investigations of crumb-rubber modified (CRM) bitumen binders in order to evaluate their rutting performance at high temperatures. Crumb rubber obtained from discarded vehicle tires was used to blend virgin viscosity grade VG10 binder. CRM binders were produced in the laboratory by blending crumb rubber with VG10 binder at various rubber proportions (5, 15, and 25% by weight of the virgin binder). In addition to the laboratory prepared CRM binders (VG10+5%, VG10+15%, and VG10+25%), three virgin viscosity grade binders VG10, VG30 and VG40, and one commercially available modified binder CRMB 60 were considered for the study. Conventional consistency tests and advanced rheological tests were performed on all the seven binders. Oscillatory tests were carried out to obtain relationships of G∗ (complex shear modulus) and δ (phase angle), and to understand the rutting and fatigue performance. Furthermore, Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) tests were conducted at two stress levels on short-Term aged samples at 60 oC chiefly to verify the elastic response of binders. Rutting performance evaluation of crumb rubber modified binders using advanced rheological test parameters

Abstract The main objective of this study was to develop, derive, and estimate the phase angle (Pdbl) parameter from resilient modulus (Mr) test, designated PdblMr, at various temperatures and frequencies for eleven types of asphalt mixtures: two conventional dense-graded (DGAC), four polymer-modified gap-graded (P-Gap), four asphalt-rubber gap-graded (AR-Gap), and one asphalt-rubber open-graded (AR-Open) mix. PdblMr were estimated for the eleven mixes with three replicates per mix totalling 33 samples at 15, 25 and 35 C and at 0.5, 1, and 1.5 Hz. AR-Open mixes had the highest PdblMr followed by AR-Gap and P-Gap, and then followed by DGAC mixes. Principally, with an increase in the asphalt content from conventional to modified mixes, there was an increase in PdblMr, suggestive of the fact that the mixes that had higher asphalt contents have extra-viscous response or are highly viscoelastic. Furthermore, PdblMr predictive model was developed based on asphalt material properties totalling 99 data points provided by R2adj (adjusted coefficient of estimation) = 0.8390, and Se/Sy (ratio of standard error to standard deviation indicative of relative accuracy of the predictive model) = 0.3820; depicting very good correlation between the estimated and predicted ∅Mr, and with low bias and high precision. Additionally, PdblMr master curves were constructed for the mixes with 35 C as reference. Overall, it is envisioned that PdblMr parameter obtained in this study will be helpful to comprehensively understand the viscoelastic properties of different asphalt mixtures, and incorporate PdblMr as a viscoelastic characteristic assessor in futuristic flexible pavement designs. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
