Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

Photosynthetic microalgal microbial fuel cells and its future upscaling aspects

This work presents the use of osmotic microbial fuel cell (OsMFC), for the first time, to concentrate nutrients and recover water and energy from source separated urine. Four sets of concentration of fresh urine as feed and NaCl as draw were examined: 10% fresh urine vs 0.25 M NaCl; 10% fresh urine vs 2 M NaCl; fresh urine vs 0.25 M NaCl; and fresh urine vs 2 M NaCl. A maximum water flux of 14.27 LMH was attained when 10% of fresh urine and 2 M of NaCl were used as feed and draw solutions, respectively. Additionally, OsMFC concentrates ~99% of TOC, TN, NH4+, and 100% of PO43− and NO3− from urine at the feed side. Polarization studies indicate that the power generation in OsMFC is related to the rate of change of conductivity and the initial conductivity of the anolyte. The maximum (0.12187 W m−3) and minimum power densities (5.3372 × 10−4 W m−3) were obtained for the conditions of fresh urine vs 0.25 M NaCl and 10% fresh urine vs 0.25 M NaCl, respectively. The study shows that OsMFC is an effective pretreatment process to concentrate nutrients from urine by recovering water and energy, simultaneously. © Elsevier Ltd

Wastewater treatment coupled with defluoridation using microbial fuel cell

The study investigates the performance of Cu2+ as dissolved cathodic electron-shuttle mediator (dcESM) for simultaneous Cr6+ reduction and electricity generation in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) at pH 2 and 4 conditions. The dcESM behavior of Cu2+ on carbon cloth (CC) catalyzes the reduction of Cr6+ into Cr3+ at pH 2 by undergoing redox reactions. However, at pH 4, a simultaneous reduction of Cu2+ and Cr6+ was observed. Cyclic voltammetry studies were performed at pH 2 and 4 to probe the dcESM behavior of Cu2+ for Cr6+ reduction on CC electrode. Also, at pH 2, increasing the concentration of Cu2+ from 50 to 500 mg L- 1 favors the Cr6+ reduction by reducing the reaction time from 108 to 48 h and improving the current production from 3.9 to 6.2 mA m- 2, respectively. Nevertheless, at pH 4, the efficacy of Cr6+ reduction and electricity generation from MFC is decreased from 63 to 18% and 4.4 to 1.1 mA m- 2, respectively, by increasing the Cu2+ concentration from 50 to 500 mg L- 1. Furthermore, the performance of dcESM behavior of Cu2+ was explored on carbon felt (CF) and platinum (Pt) electrodes, and compare the results with CC. In MFC, at pH 2, with an initial concentration of 100 mg L- 1, the reduction of Cr6+ in 60 h is 9.6 mg L- 1 for CC, 0.2 mg L- 1 for CF, and 51.3 mg L- 1 for Pt cathodes. The reduction of Cr6+ (initial concentration of 100 mg L- 1) at pH 4 in 120 h is 44.7 mg L- 1 for CC, 32.1 mg L- 1 for CF, and 70.9 mg L- 1 for Pt cathodes. Maximum power densities of 1659, 1509, and 1284 mW m- 2 were achieved when CF, CC, and Pt, respectively were employed as cathodes in the MFC. © 2020 The Author(s).

Efficiency in Chromium removal from metal plating industry effluent by Electrodialysis

 Abstract—This study compares the use of Liquid Crystal coated Polaroid Glass Electrode (LCPGE) material collected from the disposed computer monitor and carbon cloth as electrodes in microbial fuel cell (MFC) for the simultaneous reduction/recovery of hexavalent chromium (Cr 6+) from wastewater. The Cr 6+ is bioelectrochemically reduced to the non-toxic Cr 3+ form in the cathode chamber of a two-chambered MFC. At the cathode LCPGE interface, 100% of Cr 6+ reduction was achieved within 48 h of operation. Similarly, using carbon cloth as cathode, 100 mg/L of Cr 6+ was completely removed within 24 h (initial pH 2.0). In both the electrodes, the chromium was recovered as highly stable and non-toxic chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3) . The recovered Cr 2 O 3 was characterized by ATR-FTIR analysis. A maximum power density of 10 mW/m 2 and 700.11 mW/m 2 was achieved for the LCPGE and carbon cloth electrodes, respectively at ambient conditions. Moreover, 78% of organic carbon is mineralized at the anode chamber making this technology a more viable option for simultaneous chromium reduction and domestic wastewater treatment along with power production. Furthermore, the recovered Cr 2 O 3 can be used as a raw material for various applications.

Feasibility Study of Disposed LCD Monitor and Carbon Cloth Electrodes for Synchronized Removal/Recovery of Cr6+ by Microbial Fuel Cells

In the present study, a low molecular heterocyclic aminopyrazine (Apy)-reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) hybrid coated carbon cloth (r-GO-Apy-CC) was employed as an active and stable bio-electro catalyst in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The presence of imine (-NH-) and pyridinic (-NC-) functional groups on the r-GO-Apy-CC electrode plays a critical role in the formation of bacterial colonization and enhanced extracellular electron transfer (EET) over a considerable period. The bacterial colonization over the r-GO-Apy-CC electrode was investigated in a Sacrificial Electrode Mode Reactor (SEMR) in which attached bacterial density with extracellular polysaccharides was monitored over a period. Simultaneously, cyclic voltammetry (CV) was performed in a bioelectrochemical system (BES) reactor, resulting in an increased current density-voltage response from 0.27 mA cm-2 to 1.84 mA cm-2 over a period of time. In addition, when r-GO-Apy-CC was employed as an anode in MFC, the power density was nearly two times (1253 mW m-2) than that of the MFC employed with plain carbon cloth (PCC) (663.7 mW m-2) at a steady state condition. It was proposed that the combined effect of Apy hybridized with nanostructured r-GO provides a large surface area for bacterial colonization. Moreover, the high bioelectrocatalytic activity was attributed to the low molecular nature of the Apy, which incorporated well into the EET pathway of the exoelectrogens by a redox mechanism. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Heterocyclic aminopyrazine-reduced graphene oxide coated carbon cloth electrode as an active bio-electrocatalyst for extracellular electron transfer in microbial fuel cells

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology is utilized to treat hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater and to generate electricity simultaneously. The Cr(VI) is bioelectrochemically reduced to non-toxic Cr(III) form in the presence of an organic electron donor in a dual-chambered MFC. The Cr(VI) as catholyte and artificial wastewater inoculated with anaerobic sludge as anolyte, Cr(VI) at 100 mg/L was completely removed within 48 h (initial pH value 2.0). The total amount of Cr recovered was 99.87% by the precipitation of Cr(III) on the surface of the cathode. In addition to that 78.4% of total organic carbon reduction was achieved at the anode chamber within 13 days of operation. Furthermore, the maximum power density of 767.01 mW/m2 (2.08 mA/m2) was achieved by MFCs at ambient conditions. The present work has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of using MFCs for simultaneous energy production from wastewater and reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to non-toxic Cr(III). © IWA Publishing 2015.

Hexavalent chromium reduction and energy recovery by using dual-chambered microbial fuel cell

This study demonstrates the use of Liquid Crystal coated Polaroid Glass Electrode (LCPGE) material collected from disposed liquid-crystal display (LCD) computer monitor as electrodes in microbial fuel cell (MFC) for the simultaneous reduction/recovery of Cr+6 from chromium wastewater. Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) confirms the presence of NH2, C≡N, C=O and O-C and/or C-O-C functional groups in LCPGE. An excellent electrochemical performance with distinct redox peaks were observed in cyclic voltammetry test (100 mV/s). The maximum current density of 110 mA/m2 (10 mW/m2) was achieved by operating MFC in batch mode. At the cathode LCPGE (10.5 cm2) interface, toxic Cr+6 ions readily accepted electrons and formed nontoxic Cr2O3 as confirmed by FT-IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Moreover, electrochemical impedance analysis shows that bacteria were readily attached to the surface of LCPGE (10.5 cm2) within 24 h in a Bioelectrochemical System (BES). © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
