Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

An event-based state estimation for nonlinear systems under the impact of noise is considered, that may guarantee acceptable estimation performances and minimize the number of sent measurements from the sensor to a remote estimator. We design a Recursive Bayesian filter that calculate an approximated probability density functions for a given state estimation problem. For simplicity, the considered probability density functions are approximated using particle filtering approach. © 2016 University of MEDEA, Algeria.

Nonlinear event-based state estimation using particle filtering approach

The paper investigates the potential challenges faced by conventional distance relays in case of thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) compensated transmission systems. The mal-operations of back-up relays can trigger large scale cascaded outages. Detailed analysis on mal-operation of different zones of distance relay due to TCSC operation is carried out. The impact of TCSC on the relays of adjacent lines which provide back-up protection to the compensated line is observed. Finally, possible solutions to mitigate the problem associated with the impact of TCSC upon the conventional distance relays are discussed. The simulation studies are carried out on MATLAB environment. © 2016 IEEE.

Exposing zone-2 and zone-3 mal-operations in thyristor-controlled series capacitor compensated transmission system

We describe a technique to extract room temperature parameters of Schottky diodes based on single or double-terminal configurations whose barrier height is bias dependent. This method allows us to extract the zero bias barrier height without specific knowledge of interface states or the existence of insulator layers at the metal-semiconductor boundaries. This technique enables us to establish the type of thermionic emission mechanism, limited by a bias dependent image force potential and/or diffusion, taking into account interfacial states or layers. This technique makes use of experimental current-voltage (I-V) characteristics measured at both bias polarities and different intensities of illumination and the corresponding voltage-dependent differential slope-voltage characteristics α=dln(I)/dln(V). This method is verified experimentally on a conventional p-Silicon based Schottky diode and on metal-semiconductor and metal-insulator-semiconductor diodes fabricated on n-silicon-on-insulator substrates. Pd/Au Schottky electrodes were used, while the insulator stack of the metal-insulator-semiconductor diodes comprises an HfO2 layer on top of an SiO2 layer. © 2017 Author(s).

Simplified parameter extraction method for single and back-to-back Schottky diodes fabricated on silicon-on-insulator substrates

Recent blackouts have induced a sense of urgency among protection engineers to revisit the concept of zone-3 protection in power transmission network. Zone-3 mal-operation is reported to be one of the primary causes behind most of the cascaded outages. The main purpose of this paper is to present a supervisory control based wide area back-up protection scheme. A data-mining algorithm, known as decision trees, is used to classify the state of power transmission system. Further, phase angle of positive sequence integrated impedance is utilised to assist the existing zone-3 protection in order to avoid unnecessary tripping during stressed power system condition. The studies performed on western system coordinating council (WSCC)-9-bus system in Real Time Digital Simulator platform validate the proposed algorithm under various faults and stressed conditions. © 2016 IEEE.

Supervisory control based wide area back-up protection scheme for power transmission network

Dead-Time Induced Oscillations in Voltage Source Inverter-Fed Induction Motor Drives

This paper proposes a novel configuration of six phase IM to drive from a three phase stacked multilevel inverter. Apart from greater fault tolerance compared to three phase, a six phase machine enables the use of low voltage devices for the inverter. Also the inverter used here is a three phase nine level stacked inverter which itself uses low voltage devices. Thus MOSFETs can be used for the inverter. The nine level inverter is formed by stacking 2 five level inverters each of which is developed by cascading an FC and a capacitor fed H-bridge. The inverter can be stacked further to obtain still higher number of voltage levels. This enables the use of batteries at the front end and still lower voltage devices which will significanly improve the efficiency. Hence this will find applications in electric vehicles because of the direct battery drive. Experiment is conducted on a 15 KW six phase IM by reconfiguring it as a three phase machine and driven by the three phase nine level stacked inverter using V/f control scheme. Detailed experimental results are provided to validate the concept.

Stacked multilevel inverter fed six phase induction motor with reduced DC link and lower voltage devices

This paper proposes a new method of generating higher number of levels in the voltage waveform by stacking multilevel converters with lower voltage space vector structures. An important feature of this stacked structure is the use of low voltage devices while attaining higher number of levels. This will find extensive applications in electric vehicles since direct battery drive is possible. The voltages of all the capacitors in the structure can be controlled within a switching cycle using the switching state redundancies (pole voltage redundancies). This helps in reducing the capacitor size. Also, the capacitor voltages can be balanced irrespective of modulation index and load power factor. To verify the concept experimentally, a nine-level inverter is developed by stacking two five-level inverters and an induction motor is run using V/f control scheme. Both steady state and transient results are presented.

Generation of Higher Number of Voltage Levels by Stacking Inverters of Lower Multilevel Structures with Low Voltage Devices for Drives

The detection of a weak signal in additive Cauchy noise is of great importance in many applications. A locally optimum detector (LOD) exists for such a scenario; however, it is non-linear in nature. In general, implementation of non-linear detectors is difficult in practice, and linear detectors with good properties, such as high asymptotic relative efficiency (ARE) with respect to the LOD, are often desirable. In this paper, we propose a linear detector for a weak signal in additive Cauchy noise. The proposed test statistic is a linear combination of order statistics. For the special case of a constant signal in additive Cauchy noise, we prove the asymptotic normality of the trimmed linear detector, and show that the ARE of the trimmed linear detector with respect to the LOD is unity. Extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the loss in the performance of the linear detector is very small compared with the non-linear LOD. We also discuss the hardware complexities of the LOD and the linear detector, and demonstrate the advantages of the linear detector over the LOD, in terms of hardware implementation. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Proportionate Adaptive Filtering under Correntropy Criterion in Impulsive Noise Environments

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the role of connections and symmetries in the Wheeled Inverted Pendulum (WIP) mechanism—an underactuated system with rolling constraints—popularized commercially as the Segway, and thereby arrive at a set of simpler dynamical equations that could serve as the starting point for more complex feedback control designs. The first part of the article views the nonholonomic constraints enforced by the rolling assumption as defining an Ehresmann connection on a fiber bundle. The resulting equations are the reduced Euler Lagrange equations, which are identical to the Lagrange–d’Alembert equations of motion. In the second part, we explore conserved quantities, in particular, nonholonomic momenta. To do so, we first introduce the notion of a symmetry group, whose action leaves both the Lagrangian and distribution invariant. We examine two symmetry groups—SE(2) and SE(2) × S1. The first group leads to the purely kinematic case while the second gives rise to nonholonomic momentum equations. © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
