Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

In southwestern Georgia, increased groundwater withdrawal for irrigation in the Lower Flint River Basin (LFRB) is greatly affecting the supply of freshwater to downstream regions during drought years. This study was undertaken to understand the sensitivity of groundwater components to changes in irrigation pumping scenarios during droughts in the highly connected karst Upper Floridan Aquifer (UFA) and assess the effectiveness of irrigation shutdown on stream-aquifer fluxes. This study was done using the United States Geological Survey (USGS) MODular Finite-Element Groundwater model (MODFE). The model was run for the water year 2011 and changes in simulated groundwater-budget components for monthly irrigation pumping rates of 50%, 75%, 100%, 125%, 150%, and 200% of that indicated by metered irrigation systems were quantified. The effect of irrigation shutdown in the vulnerable Spring Creek subwatershed was also investigated. Results show that increasing irrigation pumping in the study area decreased aquifer storage, induced recharge to the UFA (vertical leakage), and induced recharge from streams into the UFA. During the months of May-September 2011, doubling of irrigation pumping induced nearly double the recharge rate into the UFA from streams and effected a 10% decrease in discharge rate from the UFA to streams. Analysis of irrigation shutdown indicates that eliminating irrigation pumping from the Spring Creek watershed alone facilitated an increase in baseflow of 46 × 10 4 m 3 =day, or about two-thirds the total increase in baseflow that would be realized from eliminating irrigation pumping within the entire LFRB. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Sensitivity of groundwater components to irrigation withdrawals during droughts on agricultural-intensive karst aquifer in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin

This work reports the development of a measurement technique for the estimation of thermal contact conductance at a polymer (Nylon)-metal(Copper) two dimensional interface having an annular contact under low external loading. The experimental setup consists of a vacuum chamber capable of achieving a pressure of 10−6 mbar. The chamber is fitted with electrical, thermocouple and fluid feed-throughs. Two dimensional temperature measurements are performed on the top surface of the polymer sample away from the boundary interface and are used to estimate the thermal contact conductance at the interface. The estimation process is accomplished by solving an inverse heat conduction problem using artificial neural networks coupled with Genetic algorithm. The actual pressure distribution at the annular Nylon-Copper interface is measured using a pressure sensitive film and the variation and the distribution of contact area between the mating surfaces is shown. The estimated values of thermal contact conductance obtained using the developed non-intrusive technique are found to be in good agreement with those reported in literature. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

The effect of dimpled surface configurations on heat transfer is investigated for multiple jets issuing from orifices arranged in a 3 × 3 array. The Reynolds numbers during these studies maintained in the range of 5000–40000. To assess the influence of jet and dimple pitch, the studies are performed for different dimple and orifice pitches (p = 3d, 4d, and 5d). Along with these cases, dimple depths of 0.25d and 0.5d and eccentricity between the orifice and the dimple are also studied. The distance between the orifice plate and the test surface is varied from 1d to 6d. To characterize the steady-state heat transfer from the heated target surface to the impinging air jet, the thermal image of the target surface captured with a thermal imaging camera is analysed with thin metal foil heater technique. To evaluate the effectiveness of jet impingement cooling of the dimpled surface, the average Nusselt number and coefficient of variance (COV) are calculated over a defined pitch area of ± p. It is observed that for the jet orifice and dimple pitches of three nozzle diameter (p = 3d), the flat plate is more efficient than a dimpled surface. However, for greater pitches (p ≥ 4d), the dimpled surface performed much better in comparison with the flat plate. In case of the shallow dimpled surface (t/d = 0.25), best heat transfer performance is observed for the pitch of 5d. The coefficient of variance (COV) suggests that the Nusselt number is more uniformly distributed for a pitch of 3d. © 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS

The uptake of solar power generation is on the rise. This necessitates more research into developing data-driven intelligent methods that can perform effective analytics over power generation data to inform strategies to improve solar power generation systems. In this paper, we consider the utility of time series representation learning for analytics over power generation data. WaRTEm, a representation learning method that focuses on learning time series representations that are invariant to local phase shifts, is the focus of our investigations in this paper. We identify two metadata attributes for power generation sequences, month and CellID, as attributes that embed useful notions of semantic similarity between time series sequences. We evaluate the effectiveness of WaRTEm representations, as against using the raw time series sequences, in alignment to the month and CellID labellings, using accuracy over 1NN retrieval as an evaluation framework. Through empirical evaluations, we identify that WaRTEm embeddings are consistently able to achieve better representations when evaluated on 1NN accuracy. We also identify some features of WaRTEm that are more suited for time series representation learning, which provides promising directions for future work. © 2019 IEEE.

Late-Stage Peptide Diversification through Cobalt-Catalyzed C−H Activation: Sequential Multicatalysis for Stapled Peptides

The well-known SENSITIVITY CONJECTURE regarding combinatorial complexity measures on Boolean functions states that for any Boolean function f:{0,1} n →{0,1}, block sensitivity of f is polynomially related to sensitivity of f (denoted by s(f)). From the complexity theory side, the XOR LOG-RANK CONJECTURE states that for any Boolean function, f:{0,1} n →{0,1} the communication complexity of a related function f ⊕ :{0,1} n ×{0,1} n →{0,1} (defined as f ⊕ (x,y)=f(x⊕y)) is bounded by polynomial in logarithm of the sparsity of f (the number of non-zero Fourier coefficients for f, denoted by sparsity(f)). Both the conjectures play a central role in the domains in which they are studied. A recent result of Lin and Zhang (2017) implies that to confirm the above two conjectures it suffices to upper bound alternation of f (denoted by alt(f)) for all Boolean functions f by polynomial in s(f) and logarithm of sparsity(f), respectively. In this context, we show the following results: • We show that there exists a family of Boolean functions for which alt(f) is at least exponential in s(f) and alt(f) is at least exponential in log⁡sparsity(f). En route to the proof, we also show an exponential gap between alt(f) and the decision tree complexity of f, which might be of independent interest. • As our main result, we show that, despite the above exponential gap between alt(f) and log⁡sparsity(f), the XOR LOG-RANK CONJECTURE is true for functions with the alternation upper bounded by poly(log⁡n). It is easy to observe that the SENSITIVITY CONJECTURE is also true for this class of functions. • The starting point for the above result is the observation (derived from Lin and Zhang (2017)) that for any Boolean function f, deg(f)≤alt(f)deg 2 (f)deg m (f) where deg(f), deg 2 (f) and deg m (f) are the degrees of f over R, F 2 and Z m respectively. We give three further applications of this bound: (1) We show that for Boolean functions f of constant alternation have deg 2 (f)=Ω(log⁡n). (2) Moreover, these functions also have high sparsity (exp⁡(Ω(deg(f))), thus partially answering a question of Kulkarni and Santha (2013). (3) We observe that our relation upper bounding real degree also improves the upper bound for influence to deg 2 (f) 2 ⋅alt(f) improving Guo and Komargodski (2017). © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
