Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Climate and hydrologic variables such as temperature, precipitation, streamflow, and baseflow generally do not follow Gaussian distribution due to the presence of outliers and heavy tails. Therefore, they are usually analyzed using the nonparametric Wilcoxon rank sum test rather than parametric methods like classical t tests and analysis of variance. Furthermore, in addition to having a non-Gaussian distribution, these data exhibit monthly/seasonal variability, which leads to within month/season cluster correlation. In this study, a nonparametric procedure, called joint rank fit (JRFit), for analyzing cluster-correlated data was implemented and compared against traditional methods such as restricted maximum likelihood, least absolute deviations, and rank-based fit (a model-based extension of Wilcoxon rank sum) for studying the coupled effect of the phases of El Niño–Southern Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on baseflow levels. The results from a large Monte Carlo simulation experiment showed that JRFit was more efficient than the other three methods for data with (i) high variability, (ii) outliers due to contamination, or (iii) strong monthly/seasonal correlation. The efficiency gain of JRFit was up to 50% compared to restricted maximum likelihood for heavy-tailed and highly correlated data. Predictive performance evaluated using the mean absolute prediction error and mean prediction standard error from an out-of-sample cross-validation study showed JRFit to be optimal for providing predictions of baseflow on the basis of the phases of El Niño–Southern Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. Thus, it is recommended that JRFit be implemented in hydroclimatic studies to provide powerful inference when there is evidence of clustering in the data. ©2018. American Geophysical Union. Evaluation of Nonparametric and Parametric Statistical Procedures for Modeling and Prediction of Cluster-Correlated Hydroclimatic Data

A recent alkali silica reaction (ASR)/delayed ettringite formation (DEF) expansion model was modified to account for the load-induced precracks within a structure. Factors such as the orientation of the exposure face, the reinforcement details, and the location of the strain measurements were also considered. The model was implemented for environmentally exposed large-scale reinforced concrete specimens. The model provided a satisfactory simulation of the expansion results, with most results within the extremities of the measured data. The model successfully simulated the expansion strains inside and outside the development length zone. The expansion induced by ASR/DEF deterioration mechanisms in large structural concrete members could be effectively modeled using the minimalist semiempirical formulation. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

More specifically, it takes up the political discourse of C. N. Multiple Choice Versus Descriptive Exams for Direct Evaluation of Engineering Courses at University of Sharjah

Construction projects are ambitious in terms of the complexity in its components, structures, design requirements, information flows, stakeholder integration and technological integration particularly in green building projects. As a consequence, management of these projects becomes increasingly integrated; however, risk management has taken little account of these interdisciplinary and iterative trends. This leads to poor risk management outcomes, where traditional risk management practices that rely on allocating risks to specific individual entities are not able to accommodate the collaborative facets. Experienced practitioners were interviewed regarding their current practices and techniques towards managing interdependent design tasks that resulted in inseparable collective risks. Prospective utilization of Dependency Structure Matrices (DSM) and its analysis of identifying the existence of these collaborative Design Risks among the clusters of designs are proposed as a solution in this paper. Since the paper is explorative in terms of the application of the DSM method on identifying and managing the collaborative risk management in green building design, conceptual frameworks are only proposed.

Conceptual framework for collaborative risk management during the design phase of green building projects using DSM

Restoration of heritage sites from their remains is a challenging task, as the required geospatial and geophysical data are generally incomplete and complex in nature. These data are typically collected using multiple disciplines/techniques such as GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry and ground penetration radar (GPR), to record and document factual and accurate information. This research proposes an integrated data collection and management practice towards achieving a structured archaeological documentation process with minimal or no damage to the existing structure. The process includes the integration of archaeological information from aerial stereo photographs, satellite images, global positioning systems (GPS) and GPR profiles. This approach is demonstrated through a fourth century ancient Greco-Roman city in Jordan (Umm Qais). Various abstract levels of details have been generated including orthophoto, digital elevation model (DEM) and vector site layout of buildings and infrastructure. Further, the GPR analysis shows the existence of shallow discontinuous and shifted buried walls, which indicates that the site was affected by a possible earthquake during the historical period. The developed 3D geospatial archaeological database for Umm Qais City can be utilised for various purposes such as archaeological documentation, conservation, monitoring, restoration, tourism and urban planning. The study also outlines the schedule of various processes and the cost estimate associated with the development of the integrated 3D geospatial archaeological database.

Development of Asphalt-Rubber Gap-Graded Mixture Design: Laboratory Performance Investigations

Increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) and surface temperature are known to individually have effects on crop development and yield, but their interactive effects have not been adequately investigated under field conditions. We evaluated the impacts of elevated [CO2] with and without canopy warming as a function of development in soybean and maize using infrared heating arrays nested within free air CO2 enrichment plots over three growing seasons. Vegetative development accelerated in soybean with temperature plus elevated [CO2] resulting in higher node number. Reproductive development was delayed in soybean under elevated [CO2], but warming mitigated this delay. In maize, both vegetative and reproductive developments were accelerated by warming, whereas elevated [CO2] had no apparent effect on development. Treatment-induced changes in the leaf carbohydrates, dark respiration rate, morphological parameters, and environmental conditions accompanied the changes in plant development. We used two thermal models to investigate their ability to predict the observed development under warming and elevated [CO2]. Whereas the growing degree day model underestimated the thermal threshold to reach each developmental stage, the alternative process-based model used (β function) was able to predict crop development under climate change conditions. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons Ltd
