Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

In the approaching era of IoT, flexible and low power accelerators have become essential to meet aggressive energy efficiency targets. During the last few decades, Coarse Grain Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRA) have demonstrated high energy efficiency as accelerators, especially for high-performance streaming applications. While existing CGRAs mostly rely on partial and full predication techniques to support conditional branches, inefficient architecture and mapping support for handling control flow limits the use of CGRAs in accelerating either only inner loop bodies, or transformed loops specifically adapted to the target CGRA. This paper proposes a novel CGRA architecture with support for jump and conditional jump instructions and a lightweight global synchronization mechanism to enable complete Control Data Flow Graph (CDFG) mapping in an ultra-low-power environment. The architecture is coupled with a complete design flow that efficiently maps applications with heavy control flow starting from a generic C language description. The proposed mapping approach reduces the impact of wasteful instruction issues in the conventional approaches of predication providing an average energy improvement of 1.44x and 1.6x when compared to the state of the art partial and full predication techniques. Moreover, the proposed method achieves an average speed-up up to 21x and an energy improvement up to 50.42x while executing applications with heavy control flow with respect to sequential execution on a low-power embedded CPU, demonstrating its suitability for next generation IoT applications. © 2017 IEEE.

Efficient mapping of CDFG onto coarse-grained reconfigurable array architectures

Interfacial phenomena as related to fluid mechanics basically deals with governing laws which determine the behavior of fluids in presence of different phases of matter either similar or dissimilar in constitution, when they are in contact with each other. Such situations often occur in processes and equipments having various industrial applications such as heat pipes, thermal sprays, nebulizers etc. The contact angle provides an inverse measure of wettability. Knowledge of the apparent contact angle and the shape of a drop formed on a substrate are also important in understanding processes such as dropwise condensation, drug delivery, microscale transport physics and adhesive technology, to name a few. The present study seeks to understand and predict drop shapes and their internal pressure for wall bound drops under following configurations: (i) sessile and pendant drops sitting on simple horizontal surface, (ii) drop bound and squeezed by two parallel plates and (iii) drop bound and squeezed by two non-parallel plates.

The multi-port burners are utilised in various domestic and industrial heating appliances. The thermal performance of these appliances is usually performed with loading water test. An attempt is made in this work to thermally characterise the methane-air premixed impinging flame jets of multi-port gas burner employing air jet cooling technique. The present method has an advantage that apart from the thermal efficiency, the uniformity in surface heat flux, Nusselt number and effectiveness distributions can be found. The experiments are performed with inline and staggered configurations of multi-port plate burner. The thermal performance for varying mixture Reynolds number, equivalence ratio and burner to plate spacing is presented. The inline configuration performs better in terms of thermal efficiency. However, the staggered configuration produced more uniform surface heat flux. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Thermal investigations on methane-air premixed flame jets of multi-port burners

Present study investigates the effect of the mixture equivalence ratio on the heat transfer characteristics of impinging premixed methane-air flame jets of tube burners equipped with twisted tape inserts. The induced swirl flow enhances the mixing process and improves the flame stability limits. The flame jet with mixture Reynolds number of 800 and burner to plate spacing of four times burner diameter is chosen based on the flame stability range. The heat transfer characteristics of non-swirling flame jet are compared with the swirling flame jets for various mixture compositions. Swirl flow is achieved with twisted tape inserts having twist ratios of 2, 3.2, 4.5 and 7.5. Twisted tape inserts resulted asymmetric flame. The flame shape is found to be highly influencing the heat transfer from the flame jet to the target surface. Better heat transfer distribution is achieved with stoichiometric mixture. However, the rich mixture produces more uniform heat flux distribution. Best thermal performance is observed for twisted tape with twist ratio of 7.5. The present study helps in better understanding and optimum design of the flame jet impingement heat transfer equipment. © 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS

Effect of mixture composition on heat transfer characteristics of impinging methane-air flame jets of tube burners equipped with twisted tapes

Composition, structure and properties of the products of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) are characterised by some distinctive features. High heating rate, fast cooling after rapid completion of the reactions and steep temperature gradients make SHS very effective in producing in situ composites with ceramic reinforcements. In the present work, hardfacing of AISI304 substrates has been done by fabricating a hard ternary ceramic matrix composite layer of Al2O3–TiB2–TiN by laser surface treatment at different scan speeds. The formation of the surface layer is due to laser-triggered SHS followed by laser melting. A mixture of Al, TiO2 and hBN has been used as a precursor for the SHS reaction. The study of the microstructure of the as-fabricated composite layer reveals the co-existence of TiB2 and TiN phases in the nanometric size range in Al2O3 matrix. The presence of all the phases has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The average grain sizes were calculated for the reinforcing phases and found to be 36 and 66 nm for TiB2 and TiN, respectively, for the ceramic layer fabricated with a scan speed of 10 mm s−1, whereas 21 and 53 nm have been observed for TiB2 and TiN, respectively, for the ceramic layer fabricated with the scan speed of 5 mm s−1. The understanding of the chemical synthesis in the SHS reaction mentioned here and the process of development of the reinforced composite in the fabrication of the hardfaced layer over steel surface will be immensely helpful in the discernment of the mechanical properties and, thus, finding the target area for the usage of this product. The virtues of the process and formation of the hard composite are reflected well in the microhardness achieved in the fabricated layers, as it is significantly higher than that of the substrate (AISI304 steel). In addition, indentation with a Berkovich tip in a nano-indentation set-up helped in further evaluation of the composite’s hardness and elastic modulus. The property spectrum of the composite, as reported here, indicates its suitability in various wear-intensive applications. © 2017 Institute of Materials Finishing.

Hardfacing of AISI304 steel: fabrication of oxide-boride-nitride ceramic matrix composite layer by laser-assisted high temperature chemical reaction

This paper presents an analysis of red light running (RLR) conducted at saturated intersections in the city of Mumbai, India, where the traffic is highly heterogeneous with respect to vehicle classes and driver behavior. When all vehicles are considered, almost one in 17 drivers is seen to be jumping red signals there. Unlike the RLR behavior that has been previously reported from intersections elsewhere, a peculiarity observed here is that, within a single red phase, two distinguishable segments of RLR behavior exist. The authors classified them into two regimes: Regime 1, just after the onset of red, and Regime 2, just before the onset of the next green. About one-third of RLR events occur in Regime 1 and the rest in Regime 2. The authors fit different distributions on the time distribution of RLR events. The Kolmogorov–Smirnov test suggests that, at all intersections, exponential distribution fits best for RLR behaviors in Regime 1, and extreme value distribution fits for Regime 2. In addition to those two regimes, RLR at a lower rate is observed in the period between those regimes, and normal distribution fits there. To analyze the causal factors of RLR behavior in the two regimes, the authors developed models at a mesoscopic level specific to vehicle class and regime. Although the red-to-green ratio and the presence of policing prove to be relevant factors affecting RLR in both the regimes, the relative time for which the conflict area is free affects RLR in Regime 2 but not in Regime 1.

Distilling highly entangled quantum states from weaker ones is a process that is crucial for efficient and long-distance quantum communication and has implications for several other quantum information protocols. We introduce the notion of distillation under limited resources and specifically focus on the energy constraint. The corresponding protocol, which we call the canonical distillation of entanglement, naturally leads to the set of canonically distillable states. We show that for non-interacting Hamiltonians, almost no states are canonically distillable, while the situation can be drastically different for interacting ones. Several paradigmatic Hamiltonians are considered for bipartite as well as multipartite canonical distillability. The results have potential applications for practical quantum communication devices.
