Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

Maximum likelihood estimation of LPV-SS models: a sequential Monte-Carlo approach

An early paper by Rashmi et al. presented the construction of an (n, k, d = n - 1) MBR regenerating code featuring the inherent double replication of all code symbols and repair-by-transfer (RBT), both of which are important in practice. We first show that no MBR code can contain even a single code symbol that is replicated more than twice. We then go on to present two new families of MBR codes which feature double replication of all systematic message symbols. The codes also possess a set of d nodes whose contents include the message symbols and which can be repaired through help-by-transfer (HBT). As a corollary, we obtain systematic RBT codes for the case d = (n - 1) that possess inherent double replication of all code symbols and having a field size of O(n) in comparison with the general, O(n2) field size requirement of the earlier construction by Rashmi et al. For the cases (k = d = n - 2) or (k + 1 = d = n - 2), the field size can be reduced to q = 2 and hence the codes can be binary. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of MBR codes having double replication of all code symbols and also suggest techniques which will enable an arbitrary MBR code to be converted to one with double replication of all code symbols. © 2016 IEEE.

On MBR codes with replication

In this paper, active power decoupling using six switch rectifier with a built-in ripple port (inductive or capacitive or combination of both) to reduce the size of the E-cap is studied. The six switch rectifier is analyzed as a three-port converter: (i) AC source at the input port, (ii) a load at the DC output port, and (iii) an inductor or capacitor connected to the third port called ripple port. With appropriate modulation technique, second harmonic ripple power is circulated between the input port and the ripple port without disturbing the active power flow between the input port and the output port. A suitable closed-loop controller is designed to regulate the DC bus voltage and minimize the second harmonic ripple simultaneously. The step response results presented in the paper confirm the stability of the closed loop design. The relation between modulation indices of ripple port and active port is derived to maximize the utilization of DC bus in these converters. Simulation results are presented to validate the analysis and effectiveness of the circuit. The analysis made for the ripple port can be extended to micro-inverters as well. © 2016 IEEE.

Analysis of active power decoupling in single-phase rectifier using six-switch topology

We study the effect of two simultaneous local quenches on the evolution of the Loschmidt echo (LE) and entanglement entropy (EE) of a one dimensional transverse Ising model. In this work, one of the local quenches involves the connection of two spin-1/2 chains at a certain time and the other corresponds to a sudden change in the magnitude of the transverse field at a given site in one of the spin chains. We numerically calculate the dynamics associated with the LE and the EE as a result of such double quenches, and discuss the various timescales involved in this problem using the picture of quasiparticles (QPs) generated as a result of such quenches. We perform a detailed analysis of the probability of QPs produced at the two sites and the nature of the QPs in various phases, and obtain interesting results. More specifically, we find partial reflection of these QPs at the defect center or the site of h-quench, resulting in new timescales which have never been reported before. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA Medialab srl.

Effect of double local quenches on the Loschmidt echo and entanglement entropy of a one-dimensional quantum system

We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of antiferromagnetic Ising spin chain CoV2O6 by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both monoclinic α-CoV2O6 and triclinic γ-CoV2O6 exhibit field-induced metamagnetic transitions from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state via an intermediate ferrimagnetic state with 1/3 magnetization plateau. Due to the field-induced metamagnetic transitions, these systems show large conventional as well as inverse magnetocaloric effects. In α-CoV2O6, we observe field-induced complex magnetic phases and multiple magnetization plateaus below 6 K when the field is applied along c axis. Several critical temperatures and fields have been identified from the temperature and field dependence of magnetization, magnetic entropy change, and heat capacity to construct the H-T phase diagram. As compared to α-CoV2O6, γ-CoV2O6 displays a relatively simple magnetic phase diagram. Due to the large magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature change at low or moderate applied magnetic field, γ-CoV2O6 may be considered as a magnetic refrigerant in the low-temperature region below 20 K. © 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of quasi-one-dimensional Ising spin chain CoV2O6

About 4.6 billion years ago, some event disturbed a cloud of gas and dust, triggering the gravitational collapse that led to the formation of the solar system. A core-collapse supernova, whose shock wave is capable of compressing such a cloud, is an obvious candidate for the initiating event. This hypothesis can be tested because supernovae also produce telltale patterns of short-lived radionuclides, which would be preserved today as isotopic anomalies. Previous studies of the forensic evidence have been inconclusive, finding a pattern of isotopes differing from that produced in conventional supernova models. Here we argue that these difficulties either do not arise or are mitigated if the initiating supernova was a special type, low in mass and explosion energy. Key to our conclusion is the demonstration that short-lived 10Be can be readily synthesized in such supernovae by neutrino interactions, while anomalies in stable isotopes are suppressed. © The Author(s) 2016.

Evidence from stable isotopes and 10Be for solar system formation triggered by a low-mass supernova

The boxicity (respectively cubicity) of a graph G is the least integer k such that G can be represented as an intersection graph of axis-parallel k-dimensional boxes (respectively k-dimensional unit cubes) and is denoted by box(G) (respectively cub(G)). It was shown by Adiga and Chandran (2010) that for any graph G, cub(G)?box(G)?log;bsubesub?α(G)?, where α(G) is the maximum size of an independent set in G. In this note we show that cub(G)?2?log;bsubesub(G)?box(G)+χ(G)?log;bsubesub?α(G)?, where χ(G) is the chromatic number of G. This result can provide a much better upper bound than that of Adiga and Chandran for graph classes with bounded chromatic number. For example, for bipartite graphs we obtain cub(G)?2(box(G)+?log;bsubesub?α(G)?). Moreover, we show that for every positive integer k, there exist graphs with chromatic number k such that for every ?>0, the value given by our upper bound is at most (1+?) times their cubicity. Upper bound on cubicity in terms of boxicity for graphs of low chromatic number

On-chip trace buffers are increasingly being used for at-speed debug during post-silicon validation. However, the activity history captured by these buffers is small due to their limited size. We propose a novel scheme that extends the captured trace history (by upto 162%) by using a portion of the trace buffer to also store summaries of trace messages. We describe an Overlapped trace buffer architecture that uses a reduced number of ports to capture tapered summaries where both detailed and summary versions of traces are stored simultaneously. We demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology for debugging various classes of bugs encountered during post-silicon validation. © 2016 IEEE.

Extending trace history through tapered summaries in post-silicon validation

This work proposes and evaluates a novel approach to determine interesting category for ranked lists using $\nu$-SVM. We identify three characteristics (features), entropy, unlikability and peculiarity and show how to train a classifier on these features using a set of Wikipedia tables. The learned model is evaluated by relevance assessments obtained through a user study, reflecting the correctness of our approach.

A data mining approach to choosing categorical attributes for ranked lists

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most prevalent and toxic contaminant for human beings and animals among all the aflatoxins (AFs). Additionally, AFB1 is documented as a highly carcinogenic and mutagenic contaminant in the literature. Therefore, it is of vital importance to monitor AFB1 contamination to reduce its health associated risks. In the present work, we have designed a label-free electrochemical impedimetric aptasensor for aflatoxin B1 detection. Herein, we compared the analytical performances of two aptamer sequences (seqA and seqB). The detection is based on specific recognition by the aptamer covalently-bound as compact monolayer on screen printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) via diazonium coupling reaction. The quantification of AFB1 was achieved by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A dynamic quantification range from 0.125 ng mL−1 to 16 ng mL−1 was obtained with both types of aptamer sequences while the detection limits were 0.12 ng mL−1 and 0.25 ng mL−1 for seqA and seqB respectively. For real sample applications, the developed aptasensors were demonstrated in beer and wine samples, and good recovery levels in the range of 92–102% were recorded for AFB1 detection. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.
