Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

A Class of Higher Order Accurate Schemes for Fluid Interface Problems

In this paper, we present a new finite difference scheme for solving incompressible, steady stokes equations in discontinuous domains. While solving two phase Stokes equations, across some interfaces, there are discontinuities in the pressure, viscosity and velocity. Since, these jump conditions are coupled together, it is difficult to discretise and solve the system of equations accurately. We apply the augmented approach introduced by Li et al. (Int J Numer Meth. Fluids 44:33–53, 2004) to decouple these jump conditions. A new finite difference method is then developed and presented to solve the resulting augmented system of Stokes equations. Points of intersection of grid lines and the interface are used as a node in the finite difference stencil and jump conditions are then used to determine the values at these intersection points. Numerical solutions are compared with the corresponding analytical solutions and those of the augmented immersed interface method. The method is found to be second order accurate for almost all the variables in the infinity norm.

India and the European Union are in the negotiation process for a Free Trade Agreement. However, as the result of a vote on June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom decided to exit from the European Union, i.e., Brexit. Consequently, bilateral trade costs between the United Kingdom and the European Union will increase both from the newly applicable tariff and non-tariff barriers, which will have a direct impact on trade flows between these two trading partners and an indirect impact on their income growth and on their trading partners. The United Kingdom has been is the most important trading partner for India in the EU, thus the trade deal would not be as beneficial for India as it would have been were the United Kingdom still a member of the European Union. This study attempts to analyze the effects of trade liberalization on the bilateral trade structure between India and the European Union, and the welfare effects both considering the United Kingdom as a member of the European Union and the situation when the United Kingdom exits the European Union. The study found that when United Kingdom is a member of the European Union, both India and the European Union gain more than the situation when the United Kingdom exits the European Union; due to Brexit, India would experience the decline of GDP growth rate from 1.1 to 0.5 percent while the European Union, from 0.1 to -0.5 percent. © 2016-Center for Economic Integration, Sejong Institution, Sejong University, All Rights Reserved.

Performance of two mixed refrigerant processes providing refrigeration at 70 K

One of the main issues with the infrastructure construction in seismic regions is liquefaction. This paper reports on a case study of liquefaction evaluation of a proposed building site in San Francisco, California. The risk of liquefaction was assessed considering the following site specific factors: ground water table, liquefaction hazard maps, soil type, soil density, and peak ground acceleration. The analysis revealed that the selected region has low risk of liquefaction. However, it is suggested that the uncertainty associated with the estimation of corrected SPT N value (e.g., spatial variability, other human errors, etc.) should be accounted by incorporating an additional site-specific reduction factor in the estimation of Cyclic Resistance Ratio (CRR) of the soil.

Estimation of liquefaction potential: A case study in San Francisco, California

The paper discusses the development of a linkage based amphibian legged robot for exploration and surveillance tasks. The proposed system can walk on both ground and water surfaces. The proposed system has two major mechanisms for its motion namely a planar eight bar Jansen mechanism as a leg and an Ackermann steering mechanism as for turning. The performance of the proposed mechanisms is verified in terms of motion, force (motion/walking) and structural aspects. The effectiveness and performance of the system is demonstrated by using an in-house fabricated prototype for different working conditions. The Jansen legged mechanism is redesigned in order to improve the drag force during walking on the water surface. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016.

Development of an amphibian legged robot based on jansen mechanism for exploration tasks

In the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) river basin in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida (USA), population growth in the city of Atlanta and increased groundwater withdrawal for irrigation in southwest Georgia are greatly affecting the supply of freshwater to downstream regions. This study was conducted to understand and quantify the effect of irrigation pumpage on the karst Upper Floridan Aquifer and river–aquifer interactions in the lower ACF river basin in southwest Georgia. The groundwater MODular Finite-Element model (MODFE) was used for this study. The effect of two drought years, a moderate and a severe drought year, were simulated. Comparison of the results of the irrigated and non-irrigated scenarios showed that groundwater discharge to streams is a major outflow from the aquifer, and irrigation can cause as much as 10 % change in river–aquifer flux. The results also show that during months with high irrigation (e.g., June 2011), storage loss (34 %), the recharge and discharge from the upper semi-confining unit (30 %), and the river–aquifer flux (31 %) are the major water components contributing towards the impact of irrigation pumpage in the study area. A similar scenario plays out in many river basins throughout the world, especially in basins in which underlying karst aquifers are directly connected to a nearby stream. The study suggests that improved groundwater withdrawal strategies using climate forecasts needs to be developed in such a way that excessive withdrawals during droughts can be reduced to protect streams and river flows. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) are promising high-performance and power-efficient platforms. However, their uses are still limited because of the current capability of the mapping tools. This paper presents a new scalable efficient design flow to map applications written in high level language on CGRAs. This approach leverages on simultaneous scheduling and binding steps respectively based on a heuristic and an exact method stochastically degenerated. The formal graph model of the application, obtained after compilation, is backward traversed and dynamically transformed when needed to allow for a better exploration of the design space. Results show that our approach is scalable, finds most of the time the best solutions i.e. the mappings with the shortest latencies, achieves lowest failure rate in carrying out solutions, provides lower computation time and explores more efficiently the solution space than the state of the art methods. © 2016 IEEE.
