Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

In this paper, we consider the setting of exact repair linear regenerating codes. Under this setting, we derive a new outer bound on the storage-repair-bandwidth trade-off for the case when d = k = n - 1, where (n; k; d) are parameters of the regenerating code, with their usual meaning. Taken together with the achievability result of Tian et. al. [1], we show that the new outer bound derived here completely characterizes the tradeoff for the case of exact repair linear regenerating codes, when d = k = n-1. The new outer bound is derived by analyzing the dual code of the linear regenerating code. © 2015 IEEE.

The storage-repair-bandwidth trade-off of exact repair linear regenerating codes for the case d = k = n - 1

The separation dimension of a graph G is the smallest natural number k for which the vertices of G can be embedded in Rk such that any pair of disjoint edges in G can be separated by a hyperplane normal to one of the axes. Equivalently, it is the smallest possible cardinality of a family F of total orders of the vertices of G such that for any two disjoint edges of G, there exists at least one total order in F in which all the vertices in one edge precede those in the other. In general, the maximum separation dimension of a graph on n vertices is Θ(log n). In this article, we focus on bounded degree graphs and show that the separation dimension of a graph with maximum degree d is at most 29 log ∗ d d. We also demonstrate that the above bound is nearly tight by showing that, for every d, almost all d-regular graphs have separation dimension at least ⌈d/2⌉. © 2015 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Separation dimension of bounded degree graphs

Construction projects are complex undertakings. They are characterised by multiple and diverse natured components, processes and people; hence a high dependence on information and often leading to inefficiencies in the project delivery process. The level of management of these complexities therefore greatly impinges on the performance of projects. In the past decade, implementing Building Information Modelling has been advocated as a veritable way of addressing these challenges. However, its implementation is fraught with many challenges, prominent among which is the lack of clarity as to how it impacts the existing project delivery workflows. To an effort to overcome this, the paper presents a theoretical framework for understanding and evaluating the demands for change in existing work practices and workflows. Second, it proposes a framework for decompose and populate an MDM model within which BIM change propagation may be evaluated.

Identification of process, team and tool dependencies in building information modelling (BIM) implementation using multi-domain mapping (MDM) - A theoretical framework

This study demonstrates the use of Liquid Crystal coated Polaroid Glass Electrode (LCPGE) material collected from disposed liquid-crystal display (LCD) computer monitor as electrodes in microbial fuel cell (MFC) for the simultaneous reduction/recovery of Cr+6 from chromium wastewater. Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) confirms the presence of NH2, C≡N, C=O and O-C and/or C-O-C functional groups in LCPGE. An excellent electrochemical performance with distinct redox peaks were observed in cyclic voltammetry test (100 mV/s). The maximum current density of 110 mA/m2 (10 mW/m2) was achieved by operating MFC in batch mode. At the cathode LCPGE (10.5 cm2) interface, toxic Cr+6 ions readily accepted electrons and formed nontoxic Cr2O3 as confirmed by FT-IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Moreover, electrochemical impedance analysis shows that bacteria were readily attached to the surface of LCPGE (10.5 cm2) within 24 h in a Bioelectrochemical System (BES). © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Liquid crystal polaroid glass electrode from e-waste for synchronized removal/recovery of Cr+6 from wastewater by microbial fuel cell

The paper investigates the control of a three prismatic-prismatic-revolute (3PPR) U-base planar parallel manipulator in the presence of parameter uncertainties and unknown disturbances. The 3PPR U-base planar parallel manipulator is a motion platform with singularity free workspace (bounded orientation angle θz ≤ ±90°) and has manipulator legs located on the plane in association with a moving platform. Each leg has a prismatic-prismatic-revolute joint configuration in which one prismatic joint is active in each leg. To control the end-effector's mobility of the 3PPR U-base motion platform a proportional-integral-derivative (PID)-like fuzzy logic control scheme is introduced. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller, experiments (on a in-house fabricated prototype of the proposed manipulator) with a desired characteristic trajectory are performed and its control performance is compared with an existing conventional PID controller. The results confirmed that the proposed controller has the capability to track the desired task space trajectory and gives a better robust control performance. © 2015, Indian Institute of Technology, IIT. PID-like fuzzy logic control scheme for control of a planar parallel (3PPR U-base) manipulator

Gasketed flange joint is a vital component in pressure vessels and piping systems. Flange joint is usually subjected to bending load due to expansion, wind load, self-weight, etc. Most of the flange design methods use equivalent pressure to include the effect of external bending loads. It becomes complex when the joint is subjected to bending load at elevated temperatures, due to the nonlinear behavior of gasket material. In the present work, performance of the flange joint has been studied under external bending load at elevated temperatures. A 3D finite element model is developed, considering the nonlinearities in the joint due to gasket material and contact between its members along with their temperature dependent material properties. The performance of the joint under different bolt preloads, internal fluid pressures and temperatures is studied. Flange joint with two gaskets (twin gasketed joint) placed beside each other radially, is also analyzed under external bending moment. The maximum allowable bending moments at different internal temperatures, for single and twin gasketed joints with spiral wound gasket are arrived. Copyright © 2015 by ASME.

Finite element analysis of flange joint with single and twin gaskets under external bending load

Rotor faults such as misalignment, shaft crack, rotor rub, bearing fault etc. lead to high vibration and are major cause of machinery shut down. Misalignment in rotating machinery shafts develops reaction forces and moments at the coupling. Conventionally, misalignment diagnosis is carried through vibration measurements. Especially, the existence of strong 2x component is widely accepted. However, there are other rotor-bearing faults which lead to significant 2x vibrations. Hence distinguishing misalignment is a challenging task using vibration signals alone. In view of these limitations by employing vibrations signals, present study focuses on torque measurements for misalignment diagnosis. Experimental results using torque sensor for different cases of misalignment at different frequency of operation are reported. Fourier and wavelet transforms are used to detect the misalignment fault. The variation of the fault characteristics with respect to time are reported for sampled signals using wavelet transforms. The study shows the possibilities of using torque measurements as useful and additional technique for the detection and monitoring of coupling misalignment. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Detection and monitoring of coupling misalignment in rotors using torque measurements

The structural properties of temporal networks often influence the dynamical processes that occur on these networks, e.g., bursty interaction patterns have been shown to slow down epidemics. In this paper, we investigate the effect of link lifetimes on the spread of history-dependent epidemics. We formulate an analytically tractable activity-driven temporal network model that explicitly incorporates link lifetimes. For Markovian link lifetimes, we use mean-field analysis for computing the epidemic threshold, while the effect of non-Markovian link lifetimes is studied using simulations. Furthermore, we also study the effect of negative correlation between the number of links spawned by an individual and the lifetimes of those links. Such negative correlations may arise due to the finite cognitive capacity of the individuals. Our investigations reveal that heavy-tailed link lifetimes slow down the epidemic, while negative correlations can reduce epidemic prevalence. We believe that our results help shed light on the role of link lifetimes in modulating diffusion processes on temporal networks. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Dynamics of history-dependent epidemics in temporal networks

Interference management (RF management) remains one of the main challenges facing the design and deployment of large-scale WLAN. RF management involves the detection, estimation and control of power level, channel allocations and link schedules, to improve the performance of the wireless network. Among interfering links, one can find different types of dependencies. While some of these types can be predicted with relatively low overheads, observing and inferring other types can be a challenging task. In this paper, we ask the question - in WLANs, what is the probability of different types of pair-wise link dependencies? We answer this question by deriving analytical expressions for various types of link dependencies seen in IEEE 802.11 WLANs, numerically evaluating them, and comparing them against simulations. © 2015 IFIP.

Link dependence probabilities in IEEE 802.11 infrastructure WLANs

We study minimization of a parametric family of relative entropies, termed relative $\alpha$-entropies (denoted I$\alpha$(P,Q)). These arise as redundancies under mismatched compression when cumulants of compressed lengths are considered instead of expected compressed lengths. These parametric relative entropies are a generalization of the usual relative entropy (Kullback-Leibler divergence). Just like relative entropy, these relative $\alpha$-entropies behave like squared Euclidean distance and satisfy the Pythagorean property. Minimization of I$\alpha$(P,Q) over the first argument on a set of probability distributions that constitutes a linear family is studied. Such a minimization generalizes the maximum R{\'{e}}nyi or Tsallis entropy principle. The minimizing probability distribution (termed I$\alpha$-projection) for a linear family is shown to have a power-law.
