Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

The Dynamics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (DYNAMO) field campaign was conducted to improve understanding and modeling of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO). Observations during DYNAMO focused on atmospheric parameters important for understanding MJO initiation, including vertical moisture profiles, cloud structure, precipitation processes and the planetary boundary layer. These observations were performed using a variety of in-situ and remote sensing instruments, including the S-PolKa radar deployed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the collocated University of Miami (UM) microwave radiometer operating at 23.8 and 30.0 GHz. These instruments sampled approximately the same volumes of the atmosphere. A second microwave radiometer was deployed by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program approximately 8.5 km from the UM radiometer. These observations provided an opportunity to retrieve slant water path (SWP) and slant liquid water (SLW) from ground-based microwave radiometer measurements over a range of azimuth and elevation angles during both clear sky and cloudy conditions. The retrieved SWP and SLW will be compared to those from S-PolKa radar measurements. The goal of this study is to develop an algorithm to retrieve water vapor and liquid water from ground-based radiometer measurements. © 2014 IEEE.

Retrieval of slant water path, liquid water and rain events using the cloudy sky ratio from K-band brightness temperature measurements

The field campaign of DYNAMO/CINDY2011 took place in the central equatorial Indian Ocean between September 1, 2011 and January 5, 2012. The experiment was primarily designed to improve understanding of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) in the region. Observations of vertical moisture profiles, cloud structure, precipitation processes and the planetary boundary layer are necessary to improve understanding of MJO initiation. A number of remote sensing instruments, including NCAR's S-PolKa (dual-wavelength S-and Ka-band) radar and the University of Miami's microwave radiometer, were deployed to estimate water vapor and cloud structure. These instruments were collocated and scanned a common volume of the troposphere at various azimuth and elevation angles. The University of Miami's microwave radiometer performed brightness temperature measurements at 23.8 GHz, affected mostly by water vapor, and at 30.0 GHz, primarily sensitive to cloud liquid water. These measurements were performed continuously to estimate slant water path and liquid water path during various weather conditions, including clear and cloudy skies, as well as precipitation of various intensities. © 2014 IEEE.

Resolution and performance of the cloudy sky ratio using measured brightness temperatures from ground-based microwave radiometers

Retrieval techniques and information content analysis to improve remote sensing of atmospheric water vapor, liquid water and temperature from ground-based microwave radiometer measurements

Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors for DRAM applications have been realised using stacked TiO2-ZrO2(TiO2/ZrO 2 and ZrO2/TiO2) and Si-doped ZrO2 (TiO2/Si-doped ZrO2) dielectrics. High capacitance densities (&gt; 42 fF/ μm2), low leakage current densities (&lt; 5×10-7A/cm2 at -1 V), and sub-nm EOT (&lt; 0.8 nm) have been achieved. The effects of constant voltage stress on the device characteristics is studied. The structural analysis of the samples is performed by X-ray diffraction measurements, and this is correlated to the electrical characteristics of the devices. The surface chemical states of the films are analyzed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The doped-dielectric stack (TiO2/Si-doped ZrO2) helps to reduce leakage current density and improve reliability, with a marginal reduction in capacitance density; compared to their undoped counterparts (TiO2/ZrO2 and ZrO2/TiO2). We compare the device performance of the fabricated capacitors with other stacked high-k MIM capacitors reported in recent literature. © 2014 IEEE.

High-performance stacked TiO2-ZrO2 and Si-doped ZrO2 metal-insulator-metal capacitors

Titanium and its alloys are well known for their difficult machinability nature. Because of Ti-6Al-4V alloy’s strong chemical affinity, high temperature and pressure during the grinding process, the formed chips easily weld onto the grinding wheel surface. This phenomenon reduces the wheel life and diminish the surface quality. To control the effect of temperature, most grinding operations today employ cutting fluids. These fluids help in improving the surface quality and increasing the wheel life. However, because of environmental and economic concerns, industries are now looking for sustainable alternative cooling techniques such as cryogenic cooling. The aim of this study is to present the application of liquid nitrogen cryogenic cooling as an alternative cooling technique for grinding Ti-6Al-4V alloys. To compare the effect of cryogenic condition, experiments were conducted under both dry and wet (soluble oil) conditions. Experimental results proved the effectiveness of cryogenic cooling in reducing the grinding force, obtaining better surface finish, and being less damaging to the surface condition. Finally, multiple regression models were developed to predict the normal force and tangential force in cryogenic condition. The developed models have been validated with experimental data, and the maximum prediction error of the model for normal and tangential forces was less than 12% and 9%, respectively. © 2014, IMechE. Grindability improvement of Ti-6Al-4V using cryogenic cooling

In this study, a frequency dependent algorithm is proposed in the independent modal space as an improvement to the linear quadratic regulator control algorithm. The passive control parameters such as mass, stiffness and damping of a dynamic system are sensitive to different frequency ratio when subjected to external excitation. Depending upon the sensitivity of these parameters, the algorithm is developed in such a way that the similar response reduction as that of a linear quadratic regulator can be achieved with a significantly smaller gain. The optimal gain is obtained by optimizing the H2 norm of the transfer function. It is observed from the results that the algorithm works well for high frequency ratio and near resonance regimes. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by considering a base isolated structure when subjected to a narrow band base excitation. By comparing with the results from linear quadratic regulator control, it is observed that the proposed algorithm is more efficient in terms of displacement response and optimal gain. It is envisioned that the proposed algorithm will be highly useful for response control of base isolated structures. © 2014 IFAC.

Development of frequency-dependent optimal control in independent modal space

Rainbow connection number, rc(G), of a connected graph G is the minimum number of colors needed to color its edges so that every pair of vertices is connected by at least one path in which no two edges are colored the same (note that the coloring need not be proper). In this paper we study the rainbow connection number with respect to three important graph product operations (namely the Cartesian product, the lexicographic product and the strong product) and the operation of taking the power of a graph. In this direction, we show that if G is a graph obtained by applying any of the operations mentioned above on non-trivial graphs, then rc(G) ≤ 2r(G) + c, where r(G) denotes the radius of G and c ∈ {0, 1 ,2}. In general the rainbow connection number of a bridgeless graph can be as high as the square of its radius [1]. This is an attempt to identify some graph classes which have rainbow connection number very close to the obvious lower bound of diameter (and thus the radius). The bounds reported are tight up to additive constants. The proofs are constructive and hence yield polynomial time (Formula presented.)-factor approximation algorithms. © 2013, Springer Japan.

Rainbow Connection Number of Graph Power and Graph Products

We study the performance of the Metropolis algorithm for the problem of finding a code word of weight less than or equal to M, given a generator matrix of an [n; κ]-binary linear code. The algorithm uses the set Sκ of all κ × κ invertible matrices as its search space where two elements are considered adjacent if one can be obtained from the other via an elementary row operation (i.e by adding one row to another or by swapping two rows.) We prove that the Markov chains associated with the Metropolis algorithm mix rapidly for suitable choices of the temperature parameter T. We ran the Metropolis algorithm for a number of codes and found that the algorithm performed very well in comparison to previously known experimental results. © 2014 ACM.

Potential production of short rotation coppice willow in Denmark

Synchronous lateral vibration is a frequent cause of machine failure and is probably the most common source of machine noise and vibration. Among the broad ranges of faults that cause synchronous vibration, mass unbalance and bow are the most common faults present in the rotor and hence their detailed understanding is required. In the present study, a rotor model having both mass unbalance and bow is analyzed to find the influence of these faults on the synchronous response. The synchronous response of a rotor is a function of influence coefficients due to mass unbalance and bow. The influence coefficients are analytically derived using transfer matrix method for rotor bearing system having both mass unbalance and bow. The correction unbalance vector required to balance the rotor at its first bending critical speed is computed using these analytically derived influence coefficients and the rotor responses measured at a speed much lower than the first bending critical speed. The balancing method needs a good mathematical model for the rotor system in finding the influence coefficients for mass unbalance and bow. This procedure helps in estimating the correction mass in a single trial run and using a single balancing plane, thus reducing the cycle time for balancing flexible rotors. Experiments are carried out on a test rig to verify the procedure. © 2012 The Author(s).
