Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

In general damping is estimated from impulse response obtained by giving small impact when the system is stationary (like a civil structure or a beam), this approach is well documented in many research works. In case of rotor-bearing systems such as a steam turbine, the damping estimated by impact is not identical to the damping observed during operation because of the angular acceleration effects. Since, it is not possible to obtain impact responses from a rotor bearing system operating at high speeds, one has to relay on signals obtained during operation which contain damping information. The present study compares conventional and time-frequency methods for estimating damping in rotor bearing systems from transient characteristics. Advantages of using time-frequency techniques over conventional techniques are focused.

The purpose of this article is to study Lipschitz CR mappings from an h-extendible (or semi-regular) hypersurface in ℂn. Under various assumptions on the target hypersurface, it is shown that such mappings must be smooth. Some regularity theorems for CR mappings

Graphene's extremely small intrinsic spin-orbit (SO) interaction makes the realization of many interesting phenomena such as topological/quantum spin Hall states and the spin Hall effect (SHE) practically impossible. Recently, it was predicted that the introduction of adatoms in graphene would enhance the SO interaction by the conversion of sp 2 to sp 3 bonds. However, introducing adatoms and yet keeping graphene metallic, that is, without creating electronic (Anderson) localization, is experimentally challenging. Here, we show that the controlled addition of small amounts of covalently bonded hydrogen atoms is sufficient to induce a colossal enhancement of the SO interaction by three orders of magnitude. This results in a SHE at zero external magnetic fields at room temperature, with non-local spin signals up to 100 Ω; orders of magnitude larger than in metals. The non-local SHE is, further, directly confirmed by Larmor spin-precession measurements. From this and the length dependence of the non-local signal we extract a spin relaxation length of ∼1 μm, a spin relaxation time of ∼ 90 ps and a SO strength of 2.5 meV. © 2013 Macmillan Publishers Limited. Colossal spin-orbit coupling in functionalized graphene

Given a point set P and a class of geometric objects, is a geometric graph with vertex set P such that any two vertices p and q are adjacent if and only if there is some C ∈ C containing both p and q but no other points from P. We study G∇(P) graphs where ∇ is the class of downward equilateral triangles (ie. equilateral triangles with one of their sides parallel to the x-axis and the corner opposite to this side below that side). For point sets in general position, these graphs have been shown to be equivalent to half-Θ6 graphs and TD-Delaunay graphs. The main result in our paper is that for point sets P in general position, G ∇(P) always contains a matching of size at least ⌈n - 2/3⌉ and this bound cannot be improved above ⌈n - 1/3⌉. We also give some structural properties of GStar of David(P) graphs, where Star of David is the class which contains both upward and downward equilateral triangles. We show that for point sets in general position, the block cut point graph of GStar of David(P) is simply a path. Through the equivalence of GStar of David(P) graphs with Θ6 graphs, we also deduce that any Θ6 graph can have at most 5n - 11 edges, for point sets in general position. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Fixed-orientation equilateral triangle matching of point sets

This paper reports the results of an experimental study to determine the principal thermal conductivities (k x, k y, and k z) of an anisotropic composite medium using an inverse heat transfer analysis. The direct problem consists of solving the three dimensional heat conduction equation in an orthotropic composite medium with the finite difference method to generate the required temperature distribution for known thermal conductivities. The measurement technique involves dissipating a known heat flux at the central region of a square sample and allowing it to conductively transfer the heat to an aluminium cold plate sink via a square copper ring. At steady state, temperatures at 28 (19 are used for retrievals due to symmetry) discrete locations are logged and used for parameter estimation. The entire measurement process is conducted in a vacuum environment. The inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) for retrieving the orthotropic thermal conductivity tensor(parameter estimation) is then solved using a two layer feed forward back propagation artificial neural network (ANN) trained using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LMA), with temperatures as input and thermal conductivity values k x, k y, and k z as the output. The method is first validated against a stainless steel(SS-304) sample of known thermal properties followed by the determination of the orthotropic conductivities of the honeycomb composite material. © 2013 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Simultaneous estimation of principal thermal conductivities of an anisotropic composite medium: An inverse analysis

We study the the ground state fidelity and the ground state Loschmidt echo of a three-site interacting XX chain in presence of a staggered field which exhibits special types of quantum phase transitions due to change in the topology of the Fermi surface, apart from quantum phase transitions from gapped to gapless phases. We find that, on one hand, the fidelity is able to detect only the boundaries separating the gapped from the gapless phase; it is completely insensitive to the phase transition from the two Fermi points region to the four Fermi points region lying within this gapless phase. On the other hand, the Loschmidt echo shows a dip only at a special point in the entire phase diagram and hence fails to detect any quantum phase transition associated with the present model. We provide appropriate arguments in support of this anomalous behavior. © 2013 American Physical Society.
