Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

A methodology for the design of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) pavements and slabs-on-grade is suggested incorporating the equivalent flexural strength to account for the residual moment carrying capacity. The design methodology is a modification of the yield line theory proposed by Concrete Society Report TR34 (2002). The methodology proposed has the advantage that it extends the familiar design methods of plain concrete slabs-on-grade design. Based on cost analysis, optimization of dosage of fibres and thickness has also been attempted to obtain economical solutions for typical loading.

On the Design of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Pavements and Slabs-on-Grade

Combining thermodynamic measurements with theoretical calculations we demonstrate that the iridates A 2IrO 3 (A=Na, Li) are magnetically ordered Mott insulators where the magnetism of the effective spin-orbital S=1/2 moments can be captured by a Heisenberg-Kitaev (HK) model with interactions beyond nearest-neighbor exchange. Experimentally, we observe an increase of the Curie-Weiss temperature from θ-125K for Na 2IrO 3 to θ-33K for Li 2IrO 3, while the ordering temperature remains roughly the same T N 15K. Using functional renormalization group calculations we show that this evolution of θ and T N as well as the low temperature zigzag magnetic order can be captured within this extended HK model. We estimate that Na 2IrO 3 is deep in a magnetically ordered regime, while Li 2IrO 3 appears to be close to a spin-liquid regime. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Relevance of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model for the honeycomb lattice iridates A 2IrO 3

As the consequence of the exponentially increased power density on integrated circuits, thermal issues are becoming critical in design of computing systems. Moreover, as both leakage and thermal issues have become more prominent in the deep sub-micron domain, a power and thermal aware design technique becomes less effective if the leakage/temperature dependency is not appropriately addressed. In this paper, we take into account the dependency among the leakage, the temperature, and the supply voltage in our theoretical analysis and explore the fundamental characteristics on how to employ dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) to reduce the peak operating temperature. We find that, for a specific interval, a real-time schedule using the lowest constant speed is not necessarily the optimal choice any more in minimizing the peak temperature. We identify the scenarios when a schedule using two different speeds can outperform the one using the lowest constant speed. In addition, we find that, when scheduling a periodic task set, the constant speed schedule is still the optimal solution for minimizing the peak temperature when the temperature is at its stable status. We formulate our conclusions into several theorems with formal proofs. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Transform-Free HOC Scheme for Incompressible Viscous Flow past a Rotationally Oscillating Circular Cylinder

We study the two-point function for fermionic operators in a class of strongly coupled systems using the gauge-gravity correspondence. The gravity description includes a gauge field and a dilaton which determines the gauge coupling and the potential energy. Extremal black brane solutions in this system typically have vanishing entropy. By analyzing a charged fermion in these extremal black brane backgrounds we calculate the two-point function of the corresponding boundary fermionic operator. We find that in some region of parameter space it is of Fermi liquid type. Outside this region no well-defined quasiparticles exist, with the excitations acquiring a non-vanishing width at zero frequency. At the transition, the two-point function can exhibit non-Fermi liquid behaviour. © SISSA 2012.

Holographic Fermi and non-Fermi liquids with transitions in dilaton gravity

Microelectric discharge plasma characteristic using optical emission spectroscopy and its applications are reported. Planar semiconductor as well as metal electrodes as anode and metal cylindrical electrode as a cathode are utilized. Plasma parameters such as plasma temperature and electron density were measured by noncontact optical emission spectroscopy. Plasma temperature has been calculated by line pair method and electron density calculated by modified Saha equation. A comparison between the plasma temperature and electron density of discharge plasma for different electrode combinations have been investigated. Systematic variations with respect to the plasma properties have been noticed for varying energy conditions. Application of electric discharge in surface processing and elemental identification of materials have also been demonstrated. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Microelectric discharge plasma: Characterization and applications

We present results of high pressure spray characterization of Straight Vegetable Oils (SVOs) which are potential diesel fuel substitutes. SVO sprays are visualized at high injection pressures (up to 1600 bar) to study their atomization characteristics. Spray structure studies are reported for the first time for Jatropha and Pongamia vegetable oils, under atmospheric conditions. Jatropha and Pongamia SVO sprays are found to be poorly atomized and intact liquid cores are observed even at an injection pressure of 1600 bar. Non-Newtonian behavior of Jatropha and Pongamia oil is shown to be the reason for observed spray structure. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spray characterization of straight vegetable oils at high injection pressures

Membrane curvature of a biological cell is actively involved in various fundamental cell biological functions. It has been discovered that membrane curvature and binding of peripheral membrane proteins follow a symbiotic relationship. The exact mechanism behind this interplay of protein binding and membrane curvature has not yet been properly understood. To improve understanding of the mechanism, we study curvature sorting of proteins in a model system consisting of a tether pulled from a giant unilamellar vesicle using mechanical-thermodynamic models. The concentration of proteins bound to the membrane changes significantly due to curvature. This has also been observed in experiments by other researchers. We also find that there is a phase transition based on protein concentration and we discuss the coexistence of phases and stability of solutions. Furthermore, when sorting is favorable, the increase in protein concentration stabilizes the tether in the sense that less pulling force is required to maintain the tether. A similar mechanism may be in place, when motor proteins pull tethers from donor membranes. © 2012 American Physical Society.
