Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

Contribution of myeloid dendritic cells to type I interferon-induced cytokines and chemokines: Comment on the article by Bilgic et al

BACKGROUND: The interleukin-2-mediated immune response is critical for host defense against infectious pathogens. Cytokine-inducible SRC homology 2 (SH2) domain protein (CISH), a suppressor of cytokine signaling, controls interleukin-2 signaling. METHODS: Using a case-control design, we tested for an association between CISH polymorphisms and susceptibility to major infectious diseases (bacteremia, tuberculosis and severe malaria) in blood samples from 8402 persons in Gambia, Hong Kong, Kenya, Malawi and Vietnam. We had previously tested 20 other immune-related genes in one or more of these sample collections. RESULTS: We observed associations between variant alleles of multiple CISH polymorphisms and increased susceptibility to each infectious disease in each of the study populations. When all five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (at positions -639, -292, -163, +1320 and +3415 [all relative to CISH]) within the CISH-associated locus were considered together in a multiple-SNP score, we found an association between CISH genetic variants and susceptibility to bacteremia, malaria and tuberculosis (P=3.8x10(-11) for all comparisons), with -292 accounting for most of the association signal (P=4.58x10(-7)). Peripheral-blood mononuclear cells obtained from adult subjects carrying the -292 variant, as compared with wild-type cells, showed a muted response to the stimulation of interleukin-2 production - that is, 25 to 40% less CISH expression. CONCLUSIONS: Variants of CISH are associated with susceptibility to diseases caused by diverse infectious pathogens, suggesting that negative regulators of cytokine signaling have a role in immunity against various infectious diseases. The overall risk of one of these infectious diseases was increased by at least 18% among persons carrying the variant CISH alleles. Copyright 2010 Massachusetts Medical Society.

Circuit breaker transient recovery voltage analysis with shunt capacitor bank configurations

In a typical multi-standard wireless communication receiver, the channelizer extracts multiple radio channels of distinct bandwidths from a digitized wideband input signal. The complexity of the digital front end of the receiver is dominated by the complexity of the channelizer which operates at the highest sampling rate in the system. Computationally efficient architecture is essential for cost-effective implementation of the channelizer. Reconfigurability is another key requirement in the channelizer to support different communication standards. In this paper, we propose a low complexity reconfigurable filter bank (FB) channelizer based on coefficient decimation, interpolation and frequency masking techniques. Design example shows that the proposed FB offers complexity reduction of 54.8% over modulated perfect reconstruction FB and 10.5% over discrete Fourier transform FB. Furthermore, the proposed FB has an added advantage of dynamic reconfigurability over these FBs. © 2009 IEEE.

A reconfigurable filter bank for uniform and non-uniform channelization in multi-standard wireless communication receivers

In this article, we formulate for the first time the notion of a quantum evolutionary algorithm. In fact we define a quantum analogue for any elitist (1+1) randomized search heuristic. The quantum evolutionary algorithm, which we call (1+1) quantum evolutionary algorithm (QEA), is the quantum version of the classical (1+1) evolutionary algorithm (EA), and runs only on a quantum computer. It uses Grover search [13] to accelerate the search for improved offsprings. To understand the speedup of the (1+1) QEA over the (1+1) EA, we study the three well known pseudo-Boolean optimization problems ONEMAX, LEADINGONES, and DISCREPANCY. We show that although there is a speedup in the case of ONEMAX and LEADINGONES in the quantum setting, the speedup is less than quadratic. For DISCREPANCY, we show that the speedup is at best constant. The reason for this inconsistency is due to the difference in the probability of making a successful mutation. On the one hand, if the probability of making a successful mutation is large then quantum acceleration does not help much. On the other hand, if the probabilities of making a successful mutation is small then quantum enhancement indeed helps. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Can quantum search accelerate evolutionary algorithms?

In this paper, we consider the problem of modelling the average delay experienced by a packet in a single cell IEEE 802.11 DCF wireless local area network. The packet arrival process at each node i is assumed to be Poisson with rate parameter $\lambda$_i. Since the nodes are sharing a single channel, they have to contend with one another for a successful transmission. The mean delay for a packet has been approximated by modelling the system as a 1-limited Random Polling system with zero switchover time. We show that even for non-homogeneous packet arrival processes, the mean delay of packets across the queues are same and depends on the system utilization factor and the aggregate throughput of the MAC. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the analytical results.

Delay Modelling for Single Cell IEEE 802.11 WLANs Using a Random Polling System

The objective of this study is to analyze the dynamic behavior of composite shafts with particular interest on estimation of damping. The composite shafts have been chosen as potential candidates for the replacement of conventional metallic shafts in many applications. This study analyzed the dynamic behavior of different materials such as glass/epoxy, carbon/epoxy, and boron/epoxy at different speeds. Detailed dynamic studies on the effect of different materials, stacking sequences on the unbalance responses, and eigenfrequencies are required, particularly with respect to the damping present in the composite material. Different methodologies such as logarithmic decay curve, half-power method, and hysteresis loop method using force sensors have been used for determining the damping of the composite shafts. Composite tube-shafts and solid shafts have been modeled and analyzed using ANSYS. A parametric study has been carried out to analyze the effect of stacking sequence on eigenfrequencies of composite tube-shafts. This study aims to have a comprehensive view of numerical and experimental analyses of composite shafts for eigenvalues, damping estimation, and unbalance response. Eigenfrequencies of composite tube-shafts and solid shafts were estimated through modal testing and are compared with analytical and FEM results. In this study, torsional vibration analysis for composite solid shafts has also been carried out using the rotational laser vibrometer. © The Author(s) 2010.

An auditory and acoustic study of liquids in Malayalam

While the dynamic thermal management problem is closely related to the dynamic power management problem, it has its own distinct features. In this paper, we study the feasibility checking problem for real-time periodic task sets under the peak temperature constraint. We show that the traditional scheduling approach, i.e. to repeat the schedule that is feasible through the range of one hyperperiod, does not apply any more. We then present new necessary and sufficient conditions to check the feasibility of real-time schedules. We further incorporate the close relationship of leakage, temperature, and supply voltage into our feasibility analysis, and develop more elaborated feasibility conditions. Our experiments, based on technical parameters derived from a processor using the 65 nm IC technology, demonstrate the effectiveness of our feasibility conditions and, at the same time, highlight the fact that a power/thermal-aware computing technique becomes ineffective at the submicron scale if the inter dependency of leakage, temperature, and supply voltage is not properly addressed. © 2010 IEEE.
