Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

We give a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm to check whether the Galois group Gal (f) of an input polynomial f(X) ∈ ℚ[X] is nilpotent: the running time is polynomial in size (f). Also, we generalize the Landau-Miller solvability test to an algorithm that tests if Gal (f) is in Τd: this algorithm runs in time polynomial in size (f) and n d and, moreover, if Gal (f) ∈ Τd it computes all the prime factors of #Gal (f). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

A polynomial time nilpotence test for galois groups and related results

Despite several decades of investigation, the manner in which foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) interacts with the innate and adaptive immune compartments is not completely understood. The importance of elucidating this relationship is emphasized by the inability of current FMDV vaccines to provide long-term protection and the recent outbreaks of FMDV in formerly disease-free countries. Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen-presenting cells that have evolved to monitor the environment and provide a link between the innate and adaptive immune systems. Comprehending the cross-talk between DC and FMDV will provide valuable information towards understanding the host response to the virus and will aid in the design of effective tools and vaccines to block virus spread. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Interaction of foot-and-mouth disease virus with dendritic cells

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is increasingly used in the treatment of diverse immune-mediated disorders. Since several preparations of IVIG are available for therapy, it is possible that different manufacturing processes might influence clinical efficacy of IVIG. An insight into the mechanisms of action of such different IVIG preparations is therefore necessary that will provide further guidelines for the utility of IVIG preparations in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Since endothelial cells (EC) influence the inflammatory process via production of cytokines, chemokines and expression of adhesive molecules, we analyzed the anti-inflammatory effect on EC of two IVIG preparations: caprylated IVIG (IVIG-C) versus solvent/detergent-treated IVIG (IVIG-SD) preparation. We found that both IVIG preparations inhibit in an equivalent manner, the expression of different pro-inflammatory factors such as IL-6, IL-8, GM-CSF, IL-1β and TNF-α and the adhesion molecules ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Our results thus suggest that the caprylate while inactivating the virus and enhancing the yield of IgG during IVIG formulation, does not modulate the immunomodulatory properties of IVIG at EC level and that the two preparations show similar anti-inflammatory effects. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Comparative study of the anti-inflammatory effect of two intravenous immunoglobulin preparations manufactured by different processes

Two dimensional (2-D) image convolution is a typical algorithm executed by window-based spatial domain filters, which are in turn used in many applications including intrusion detection. Systolic arrays have been widely used in them by exploiting the hardware parallelism on FPGAs to increase the throughput of the system. These implementations differ mostly in the processing element (PE) architecture employed. We propose a new scheme for the PE in the systolic array architecture which uses a novel area-time efficient lookup table (LUT) based method and reduces the LUT resource usage by almost 50% when compared to the conventional constant coefficient LUT based method. © 2006 IEEE.

Design of an area-efficient multiplierless processing element for fast two dimensional image convolution

In this paper, a new Wavelet threshold based ECG signal compression technique using uniform scalar zero zone quantizer (USZZQ) and Huffman coding on differencing significance map (DSM) is proposed. Wavelet coefficients are selected based on the energy packing efficiency of each sub-band. Significant Wavelet coefficients are quantized with uniform scalar zero zone quantizer. Significance map is created to store the indices of the significant coefficients. This map is encoded efficiently with less number of bits by applying Huffman coding on the differences between indices in the significance map. ECG records from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database are selected as test data. For the record 117, the proposed technique achieves a compression ratio of 18.7:1 with lower percentage root mean square difference (PRD) compared to other threshold based methods. The proposed technique is tested for MIT-BIH arrhythmia record 119 and a compression ratio of 21.81:1 is achieved with a PRD value of 3.716% which is much lower compared to the reported PRD value of 5.0 and 5.5% of set partitioning in hierarchical tress (SPIHT) and analysis by synthesis ECG compressor (ASEC), respectively. The noise eliminating capability of the proposed technique is also demonstrated in this work. The proposed technique achieves the required compression ratio with less reconstruction error for GSM-based cellular telemedicine system. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Wavelet threshold based ECG compression using USZZQ and Huffman coding of DSM

A new novel Wavelet-threshold based ECG signal compression method is proposed using linear phase Biorthogonal 917 discrete Wavelet transform, uniform scalar zero zone quantizer (USZZQ) and Huffman coding of the difference between two consecutive index of the significant coefficients. The compression performance of the proposed method is better compared to EZW SPIHT ASEC and other wavelet-threshold based coders. The proposed method is tested for the MIT-BIH arrhythmia record 119 and a compression ratio of 21.8:1 is achieved with PRD value of 3.7166\% which is much lower as compared to the reported PRD value of 5.0\% and 5.5\% of SPIHT and ASEC, respectively. The proposed method requires less computation time since it does not need QRS detection, period normalization, amplitude normalization and mean removal. Hence, the proposed method can be used for the transmission of ECG signal over the band limited telephone networks.

Wavelet-threshold based ECG compression with smooth retrieved quality for telecardiology

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) has been used in the treatment of primary and secondary antibody deficiencies for over 25 years. It is a safe preparation with no long-term side effects. IVIg was first demonstrated to be effective in autoimmune disorders, two decades ago, in the treatment of acute immune thrombocytopenia. Since then, the therapeutic efficacy of IVIg has been established in Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), myasthenia gravis (MG), dermatomyositis (DM), Kawasaki syndrome and the prevention of graft-versus-host disease in recipients of allogeneic bone marrow transplants and reported in a large number of other autoimmune and systemic inflammatory conditions.

Intravenous immunoglobulin in neurological disorders: A mechanistic perspective

Equations of motion of a ball bearing are formulated in generalized coordinates, using Lagrange's equation considering the vibrational characteristics of the individual constituents such as inner race, outer race, cage, and balls, in order to investigate the structural vibration of the bearing. This article is the second part of the present study dealing with structural vibration, whereas in the first part, elastohydrodynamic mixed lubricated contact stiffness and damping coefficients are determined. Utilizing these stiffness and damping coefficients, a non-linear load-deflection contact model is developed. This is then used in the equations of motion. The equations of motion are solved using Runge-Kutta integration technique. This work differs from the previous studies in the sense that the model simulates the vibration, considering that both the lubricated contact stiffness and damping correspond to the conservative and dissipative energies, respectively. It is observed that under undamped conditions, all the elements of the bearing actively participate in energy sharing and oscillate periodically, containing more than one frequency. The system vibration, however, died down rapidly in the presence of damping. © IMechE 2005.

On the dynamics of elastohydrodynamic mixed lubricated ball bearings. Part II: Non-linear structural vibration

The detection and monitoring of slant crack in the rotor system using mechanical impedance was discussed. The effect of a slant crack parameters on normalized impedance was found to be the same as transverse cracks. The changes in rotor impedance due to cracks were found to be significant, as compared to that of natural frequencies of the rotor-bearing system. It was suggested that the measurements of mechanical impedance can also be used for slant crack detection and monitoring.

Vibrations of cracked rotor system: Transverse crack versus slant crack

Biological membranes are known to contain compositional heterogeneities, often termed rafts, with distinguishable composition and function, and these heterogeneities participate in vigorous transport processes. Membrane lipid phase coexistence is expected to modulate these processes through the differing mechanical properties of the bulk domains and line tension at phase boundaries. In this contribution, we compare the predictions from a shape theory derived for vesicles with fluid phase coexistence to the geometry of giant unilamellar vesicles with coexisting liquid-disordered (Ld) and liquid-ordered (Lo) phases. We find a bending modulus for the Lo phase higher than that of the Ld phase and a saddle-splay (Gauss) modulus difference with the Gauss modulus of the Lo phase being more negative than the Ld phase. The Gauss modulus critically influences membrane processes that change topology, such as vesicle fission or fusion, and could therefore be of significant biological relevance in heterogeneous membranes. Our observations of experimental vesicle geometries being modulated by Gaussian curvature moduli differences confirm the prediction by the theory of Juelicher and Lipowsky. © 2005 by the Biophysical Society.
