Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Cryogenic machining is one of the emerging manufacturing techniques in the field of metal cutting industries due to the new stringent environmental regulations in terms of utilization and disposal of chemically contaminated conventional coolants. The method of supply of cryogenic coolants at the machining zone significantly influences the machined product functional performance. In this context, it is necessary to understand the turning process performance under various methods of cryogenic coolant supply. The present review article highlights the knowledge of new cryogenic cooling approaches in the turning process and its effect on process performance during the machining of various materials. Following the new cryogenic cooling approaches, a review on optimization and modeling of the cryogenic turning process was reported. From the review, it was observed that novel cryogenic cooling methods positively affect the turning performance characteristics like surface roughness, tool wear, chip morphology and surface integrity, respectively. It was observed that the cryogenic machining improves the product functional performance when compared to dry, conventional (flood cooling) and minimum quantity lubrication machining processes, respectively. Identifying the effectiveness of manner of cryogenic coolant supply in different cryogenic cooling techniques in turning process—a review

Nanocomposite made of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is a promising candidate for non-volatile memory application in oxide electronics. Here, we report bipolar resistive switching (RS) behaviour in (1-x)LSMO.(x)rGO nanocomposite system, for 0.001 ≤x≤ 0.010. The structural characterization revealed the presence of individual constituent phases. The switching behaviour is observed to be very stable over 1000 switching cycles and robust against different voltage sweeping rates with a minimum switching speed of 1.1 μs. An oxygen vacancy induced conduction filament based model is proposed to understand the origin of the switching phenomenon and similar observation is made through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) measurements. © 2019

Structural and resistive switching behaviour in lanthanum strontium manganite - Reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite system

Mechanistic-empirical design of flexible pavement AASHTO practice requires resilient characteristics of sub grade soil. Though the resilient modulus is assumed to account for plastic strain accumulation, some subgrade soils with more fine content undergo excessive plastic deformation under repeated loads even though they have remarkable resilient properties. Hence permanent deformation is also an important parameter which should be considered in the design process. In the present study, permanent deformation behaviour of clayey subgrade soil with intermediate compressibility is studied using repeated load triaxial tests. The influence of confining pressure, moisture content and deviator stress levels on the permanent deformation behaviour is examined. The transition of the soil sample from stable to unstable state can be observed and critical stress levels established with the help of shake down theory. Two regression models reported in the literature, Power law model and VTT model, are used to predict the plastic strains with a number of load cycles and stress levels as the variables. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Resilient and permanent deformation behaviour of clayey subgrade soil subjected to repeated load triaxial tests

We derive a local criterion for a plane near-triangulated graph to be perfect. It is shown that a plane near-triangulated graph is perfect if and only if it does not contain either a vertex, an edge or a triangle, the neighbourhood of which has an odd hole as its boundary. The characterization leads to an O(n2) algorithm for checking perfectness of plane near-triangulations. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

A Linear Time Algorithm for Computing the Eternal Vertex Cover Number of Cactus Graphs

Flow connectivity in the hillslope–riparian–stream (HRS) system describes the hydrological linkage between upland water and the channel network. However, the time and form of the establishment of HRS connectivity are not adequately understood. Herein, we examined how hillslope structure (topography and soil) and rainfall influence HRS connectivity in a steep, forested, zero-order catchment at the Hemuqiao Hydrological Experimental Station in Southeast China, from July 2016 to November 2017. To this end, surface and subsurface flow, soil moisture, and soil hydraulic conductivity (Ks) were observed, and soil dye staining experiments were conducted. Two patterns of HRS connectivity, namely saturation connectivity that initiates at the soil–bedrock interface (SCSB) and saturation connectivity at different soil horizons (SCSH), were identified. The persistence time of SCSH connectivity was short (&lt;1 h), and the contribution of the perched interflow in different soil horizons to the total runoff was relatively small (0.6–3.0%). Instead, we found that the soil–bedrock interface acted as an important impeding layer that established HRS connectivity. That is, among the rainfall events during which HRS connectivity was established, 90% were established through SCSB connectivity and only 10% were established through SCSH connectivity. We further evaluated the time required to established HRS connectivity and found that SCSB connectivity required more time (4.6–67.4 h) than SCSH connectivity (&lt;1 h). We further found that rainfall intensity determined the initiation of connectivity and that the time required for HRS connectivity decreased exponentially with increasing rainfall intensity (R2 = 0.67). Finally, we found that subsurface saturation excess flow, rather than Hortonian overland flow, was the main contributor to the flood peak during large events. In these events, the total volume of the runoff and flood peak were five and eight times higher than that of subsurface outflow, respectively. These results provide a clearer understanding of runoff generation and can narrow the gap between experiments and models for further development of hydrological theories and methods. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Effects of critical zone structure on patterns of flow connectivity induced by rainstorms in a steep forested catchment

Studies of networked phenomena, such as interactions in online social media, often rely on incomplete data, either because these phenomena are partially observed, or because the data is too large or expensive to acquire all at once. Analysis of incomplete data leads to skewed or misleading results. In this paper, we investigate limitations of learning to complete partially observed networks via node querying. Concretely, we study the following problem: given (i) a partially observed network, (ii) the ability to query nodes for their connections (e.g., by accessing an API), and (iii) a budget on the number of such queries, sequentially learn which nodes to query in order to maximally increase observability. We call this querying process Network Online Learning and present a family of algorithms called NOL*. These algorithms learn to choose which partially observed node to query next based on a parameterized model that is trained online through a process of exploration and exploitation. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real world networks show that (i) it is possible to sequentially learn to choose which nodes are best to query in a network and (ii) some macroscopic properties of networks, such as the degree distribution and modular structure, impact the potential for learning and the optimal amount of random exploration. © 2020, The Author(s).

Understanding the limitations of network online learning

In this study, a higher order compact (HOC) finite difference scheme is proposed for the simulation of multiphase flows with surface tension effects by coupling the pure streamfunction formulation of Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations with the level set method. Unlike most of the existing methods for multiphase flows that solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in the velocity–pressure form or the stream-function vorticity form, we recast the governing equations into the biharmonic form of the N–S equations which carries stream-function $\psi$ as the only variable to be computed. The coupling of this formulation with level set (LS) enables the simulation of two phase flows by the core computation of only the single variable $\psi$ free from discontinuities in the whole physical domain. In the process, we also propose a novel hybrid HOC algorithm for post-processing the pressure on either side of the interface including the jump across it. The robustness of this method is established through a series of benchmark problems such as dispersion of capillary waves, static bubble and oscillating bubble at equilibrium in a fluid at rest and deforming circular drops in shear flows. We compare our numerical results with available benchmark results and excellent match is obtained in all the cases along with accurate representation of overall trends. Our approach is proved to be very efficient in terms of its easy implementation, relatively low computational time and high order of accuracy.

A hybrid ψ-v HOC approach for surface tension driven flows in level set framework

Distinct selectivity control in Cp*CoIII-catalyzed domino C-H activation/pyridine directing group migration/alkyne annulation has been accomplished through the nucleophilicity of an organometallic cobalt intermediate with a d6 electron configuration. Detailed mechanistic studies provided compelling evidence for a facile C-H activation along with a favorable migration of the directing group for the Cp*CoIII catalysis, rather than the β-oxygen elimination observed for a (CO)3MnI manifold.
