Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

We study the normal fluctuations of an MCF-7 cell membrane and calibrate the optical trap to detect pitch motion to get information about the rocking motion of a birefringent particle. We could show both theoretically and experimentally that the Z power spectrum has a power-law behavior of (frequency)-5/3, and We find that the power spectrum of slope fluctuations is proportional to (frequency)-1. We could extract parameters like bending rigidity directly from the power spectrum fitting parameters in 5 Hz to 1 kHz range. Our method was powerful enough to identify pitch rotation for a spherical birefringent particle to a high resolution using optical tweezers. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Determination of local cell membrane slope fluctuations using the pitch rotational mode of optical tweezers

A Procedure to Reduce the Uncertainty in Regional-Scale Climate Change Impact Studies

In this paper, we propose a novel CGRA architecture and associated compilation flow supporting both integer and floating-point computations for energy efficient acceleration of DSP applications. Experimental results show that the proposed accelerator achieves a maximum of 4.61× speedup compared to a DSP optimized, ultra low power RISC-V based CPU while executing seizure detection, a representative of wide range of EEG signal processing applications with an area overhead of 1.9 × The proposed CGRA achieves a maximum of 6.5× energy efficiency compared to the CPU. © 2020 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. Energy efficient acceleration of floating point applications onto CGRA

Computer simulations of a wide range of applications like materials processing, thermal energy storage and conversion systems, nuclear reactors, solar energy, and pollution control, etc. are of high importance in this era. In many of these applications, strong thermo-fluidic interactions between fluid and structures exist. Efficient and accurate numerical modelling of these interactions provide initial predictions of the process, but at times, it becomes challenging where complex shape of the structures is involved. To address this issue, often numerical methods that are proposed suffer lower computational accuracy and complex algorithms to capture interfacial predictions. In this paper, development, accuracy study and robustness of an in-house openMP parallelized Immersed Boundary-Thermal Lattice-Boltzmann (IB-TLB) solver are presented, which is capable of simulating complex boundary problems involving thermal interactions and accurately capture interfacial predictions. The solver showed excellent agreement with literature for a natural convection problem involving eccentrically placed stationary heated cylinder inside a cold square enclosure and forced convection around an iso-thermal circular cylinder. The numerical simulation of moving bodies is already quite a complex problem and the complexity increases further when we introduce heat transfer phenomena in it. Spatial order of accuracy test revealed, the IB-TLB algorithm exhibits first-order accuracy for velocity and temperature errors while pressure error retained second-order accuracy for moving boundary problems. It is also observed that the present algorithm can accurately predict local parameters like coefficient of pressure and Nusselt number with good accuracy and thus possesses promising potential to simulate complex moving boundary problems. The present solver will find its application in a wide range of areas such as heat exchangers, solar energy systems and chemical and food industries etc. © 2020 Institute of Physics Publishing. Development of an immersed boundary-thermal lattice boltzmann solver for fluid-particle interaction in energy management systems

Current study aims to investigate the effect of machining stability on the surface integrity of the wire electric discharge machined Inconel 718 superalloy. The wire electrode material used for machining is hard zinc coated brass. Experiments were conducted at various levels of machining stabilities, defined with respect to discharge energies and machining gap conditions. The topographical characteristics were analysed by contact surface profilometer and non-contact 3D profilometer. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were analyzed to observe and compare the surface defects like microvoids, micro-cracks, micro globules, micro-craters on the samples machined at different stability levels. The least stable machining condition, with highest discharge energy, lowest inter electrode gap and least pulse off time, produced the most uneven topography. Recast layer (RCL) thickness was analyzed by observing the polished cross-sectional view of machined specimens under SEM. The conditions that provided the least RCL thickness were the most stable machining conditions. Furthermore, the surface layer characteristics like elemental contamination and thermal softening effects were analyzed using EDS and micro hardness tester respectively. All these characteristics have close relationship with the degree of machining stability. © 2020 The Author(s).

Surface integrity comparison of wire electric discharge machined Inconel 718 surfaces at different machining stabilities

The study aims to correlate the mean gap voltage variation and wire breakage occurrences during the wire EDM of Inconel 718. A novel approach to predict the wire breakage is introduced by considering the mean gap voltage variation ($\Delta$Vm) as an indicator of the instabilities in the spark gap. Such instabilities are regarded as the primary reason for wire breakages and inferior part quality of wire electric discharge machined components. The parameter $\Delta$Vm is a process data obtained as the difference between servo voltage and mean gap voltage (Vm). It was found experimentally that if the value of $\Delta$Vm crosses a threshold limit, the process interruptions through wire breakages were observed. In order to predict the wire breakage situations, the study models $\Delta$Vm using adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). Based on central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM), 31 experiments were conducted and $\Delta$Vm is recorded as the response. The input parameters considered were pulse on time, pulse off time, servo voltage and wire feed rate. The ANFIS model was found very accurate in predicting $\Delta$Vm, based on which wire breakage alerts can be given. The capability of the model is further confirmed by verification experiments. EDS and microstructural analysis further revealed the effect of $\Delta$Vm on wire wear and part quality. Higher value of $\Delta$Vm resulted in greater wire wear and inferior part quality. The surface finish and flatness error of machined parts were measured to compare the part quality.

Temperature dependent study of magnetization dynamics in CrCl3 – a layered antiferromagnet

The current paper presents a meshless formulation for the analysis of geometrically nonlinear one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beams. Element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is used as the meshless numerical tool and Newton-Raphson method as the iterative scheme. Numerical examples of beams with four different boundary conditions are solved, and the results are compared with that of the finite element method (FEM). EFGM results are found in good agreement with that of FEM. Also, it is found that EFGM eliminates the effect of membrane locking in thin beams. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
