Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Multi-port gas burners find applications in various industrial and domestic heating appliances. The multiple flame jets of the burners provide higher rate of heat transfer with uniform heat flux over a large area of the target surface. An extensive contribution to the design and development of energy efficient and clean combustion gas burners is reported by the scientific community. The involvement of combustion apart from the heat transfer makes the physical understanding more complex as compared to other heating methods. One of the most interesting things is that the combustion and the heat transfer phenomenon are associated with one another and the independent characterization of each will be unproductive. Present study investigates the thermal characterization of self-aspirating radial-type domestic gas stove burners. The heat transfer characteristics are studied for varied inner port swirl angles. An alternate methodology is suggested to evaluate the thermal performance of burners which gives more technical insights in comparison with conventional water loading test. The thermal efficiency from the conventional water loading method and the presented alternate method matches within ±2%. Among all swirl angles of burner ports, the inner port swirl angle of 10° produced higher Nusselt number and thermal efficiency. The efficiency is found to be increased by 7% by a simultaneous reduction in the loading height by 10 mm and by providing an inner swirl angle of 10°. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Thermal investigations on self-aspirating type radial flow burners with induced swirl

Thermally efficient gas burners can be designed by optimising the parameters associated with combustion and heat transfer mechanisms. The current study presents the thermal analysis of the premixed methane-air flame jets of circular tube gas burner impinging on a target surface. The effect of flame jet parameters such as mixture Reynolds number, equivalence ratio and burner to target surface spacing on heat transfer characteristics is investigated. The thermal performance is quantified in terms of thermal efficiency. The lean and stoichiometric mixtures release maximum amount of thermal energy. However, in lean flames, a part of the energy released is used for rising the temperature of excess air. Though the combustion is incomplete for fuel rich flames, higher heat transfer is achieved because of higher flame height. The optimal thermal performance is observed when the mixture is near stoichiometric and the burner is spaced from the target surface such that the premixed cone tip just touches the surface. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Impinging premixed methane-air flame jet of tube burner: thermal performance analysis for varied equivalence ratios

Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRAs) are emerging as low power computing alternative providing a high grade of acceleration. However, the area and energy efficiency of these devices are bottlenecked by the configuration/context memory when they are made autonomous and loosely coupled with CPUs. The size of these context memories is of prime importance due to their high area and impact on the power consumption. For instance, a 64-word context memory typically represents 40% of a processing element area. In this context, since traditional mapping approaches do not take the size of the context memory into account, CGRAs often become oversized which strongly degrade their performance and interest. In this paper, we propose a context memory aware mapping for CGRAs to achieve better area and energy efficiency. This paper motivates the need of constraining the size of the context memory inside the processing element (PE) for ultra low power acceleration. It also describes the mapping approach which tries to find at least one mapping solution for a given set of constraints defined by the context memories of the PEs. Experiments show that our proposed solution achieves an average of 2.3× energy gain (with a maximum of 3.1× and a minimum of 1.4×) compared to the mapping approach without the memory constraints, while using 2× less context memory. When compared to the CPU, the proposed mapping achieves an average of 14× (with a maximum of 23× and minimum of 5×) energy gain. © 2019 EDAA.

Context-memory Aware Mapping for Energy Efficient Acceleration with CGRAs

A flow-metallaelectro-catalyzed C-H activation was realized in terms of robust rhodaelectro-catalyzed alkyne annulations. To this end, a modular electro-flow cell with a porous graphite felt anode was designed to ensure efficient turnover. Thereby, a variety of C-H/N-H functionalizations proved amenable for alkyne annulations with high levels of regioselectivity and functional group tolerance, viable in both an inter- or intramolecular manner. The electro-flow C-H activation allowed easy scale up, while in-operando kinetic analysis was accomplished by online flow-NMR spectroscopy. Mechanistic studies suggest an oxidatively induced reductive elimination pathway on rhodium(III) in an electrocatalytic regime. © 2019 American Chemical Society.

Flow Rhodaelectro-Catalyzed Alkyne Annulations by Versatile C-H Activation: Mechanistic Support for Rhodium(III/IV)

Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) has become the standard choice for live events and on-demand video services. In fact, by performing bitrate adaptation at the client side, DASH operates to deliver the highest possible Quality of Experience (QoE) under given network conditions. In cellular networks, in particular, video streaming services are affected by mobility and cell load variation. In this context, DASH video clients continually adapt the streaming quality to cope with channel variability. However, since they operate in a greedy manner, adaptive video clients can overload cellular network resources, degrading the QoE of other users and suffer persistent bitrate oscillations. In this paper, we tackle this problem using a new eNB scheduler, named Shadow-Enforcer, which ensures minimal number of quality switches as well as efficient and fair utilization of network resources. Our scheduler works well under dynamic scenarios and mobility and requires minimal information, i.e., just the set of video bitrates supported by DASH video clients. It consists of the cascade of a virtual scheduler, Shadow and the actual scheduler, Enforcer, piloted by the virtual one. Extensive simulations demonstrate the efficiency, fairness and the smooth response to channel variations of the proposed solution.

Dynamic DASH Aware Scheduling in Cellular Networks

Video streaming over cellular network has become extremely popular in 4G and will be an integral part of future cellular networks. While most modern-day video clients continually adapt quality of video streams, they neither coordinate with network elements nor among each other. Consequently, a streaming client may quickly overload the cellular network, leading to poor Quality of Experience (QoE) for users in the network. Motivated by this problem, we present D-VIEWS-a scheduling paradigm that assures video bitrate stability of adaptive video streams while ensuring better system utilization. D-VIEWS only needs to be aware of the set of video bitrates and requires no changes to streaming clients and other network functions. Through simulations, we also study the performance of proportional fairness scheduler and D-VIEWS in the presence of user arrival and departure events. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Enforcing Bitrate-Stability for Adaptive Streaming Traffic in Cellular Networks

Bentonite was added to a locally available rock dust to study the behaviour thresholds of the binary mix. Thresholds may be defined as the critical fines content above which the system behaviour changes drastically. By understanding the threshold values of such binary mixtures will help us to have a better control over its behaviour. In this study, the hydraulic conductivity and the swelling behaviour of quarry dust mixed with increasing fractions of bentonite were studied. Index properties of quarry dust were determined by standard sieve analysis, mini-compaction and by cone penetration method. The specific gravity of the quarry dust was about 2.65. The addition of bentonite to quarry dust has found to increase the maximum dry density and reduce the hydraulic conductivity by several orders. The swell potential of the various mix proportions was studied in an oedometer. Samples were of 14 mm thickness and were given a hydration period of 24 h and were compacted at their OMC and MDD. Mixes with low bentonite contents such as a 5% and 10% showed no swelling. The substantial swelling was only observed with 15% bentonite and more. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2019.

Behaviour thresholds of quarry dust–bentonite mixes

Given a graph G=(V,E) whose vertices have been properly coloured, we say that a path in G is colourful if no two vertices in the path have the same colour. It is a corollary of the Gallai–Roy–Vitaver Theorem that every properly coloured graph contains a colourful path on χ(G) vertices. We explore a conjecture that states that every properly coloured triangle-free graph G contains an induced colourful path on χ(G) vertices and prove its correctness when the girth of G is at least χ(G). Recent work on this conjecture by Gyárfás and Sárközy, and Scott and Seymour has shown the existence of a function f such that if χ(G)≥f(k), then an induced colourful path on k vertices is guaranteed to exist in any properly coloured triangle-free graph G. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

On induced colourful paths in triangle-free graphs

A novel diffuse interface immersed boundary (IB) approach in the finite volume framework is developed for non-Boussinesq flows with heat transfer. These flows are characterized by variable density, large temperature differences, nonzero velocity divergence, and low Mach numbers. The present IB methodology assumes that the solid body immersed in the domain is filled with a "virtual" fluid and constructs a unified momentum equation that is solved everywhere in the domain. The unified momentum equation is obtained as a convex combination of the Navier-Stokes equation and the no-slip boundary condition employing the solid volume fraction. The hydrodynamic pressure (p) that drives the flow is obtained by the solution of a variable density Poisson equation that is constructed by assuming that the velocity field inside the solid always remains solenoidal although the velocity divergence is nonzero in the fluid domain. The unified Poisson equation is also solved everywhere in the domain and has source terms that depend on the solid volume fraction, temperature gradients, and the spatially invariant thermodynamic pressure (P) that vanish in the Boussinesq limit. The thermodynamic pressure in closed domains follows from the principle of global mass conservation and is used to determine the density field everywhere in the domain except inside the solid where the density remains constant. Numerical simulations are carried out for natural and mixed convective flows in enclosures with stationary and moving heated bodies encompassing both Boussinesq and strongly non-Boussinesq flow regimes. The results of these investigations show that the local Nusselt number distribution over the body surface is oscillatory particularly when grid lines are not aligned with the surface of the body. However, the proposed approach can reasonably accurately compute the average heat transfer in both Boussinesq and non-Boussinesq flows. Investigations show that the heat transfer is significantly enhanced in the non-Boussinesq regime as compared to the Boussinesq regime. A comparison of results from the present approach with those obtained using a body-fitted finite volume solver for stationary bodies demonstrates that the proposed IB approach can compute the flow dynamics quite accurately even on Cartesian meshes that do not conform to the geometry. The IB approach presented herein is a generic approach for quasi-incompressible flows and may be applied to other low Mach number flows such as mixing and reacting flows. © 2019 Author(s).
