Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Red blood cells in shear flow show a variety of different shapes due to the complex interplay between hydrodynamics and membrane elasticity. Malaria-infected red blood cells become generally adhesive and less deformable. Adhesion to a substrate leads to a reduction in shape variability and to a flipping motion of the non-spherical shapes during the mid-stage of infection. Here, we present a complete state diagram for wall adhesion of red blood cells in shear flow obtained by simulations, using a particle-based mesoscale hydrodynamics approach, multiparticle collision dynamics. We find that cell flipping at a substrate is replaced by crawling beyond a critical shear rate, which increases with both membrane stiffness and viscosity contrast between the cytosol and suspending medium. This change in cell dynamics resembles the transition between tumbling and tank-treading for red blood cells in free shear flow. In the context of malaria infections, the flipping-crawling transition would strongly increase the adhesive interactions with the vascular endothelium, but might be suppressed by the combined effect of increased elasticity and viscosity contrast.

Composite materials are having good dynamic properties, specific strength, and specific stiffness. The analytical formulations for dynamic analysis of composite tube shafts are mainly equivalent modulus beam theory (EMBT) and layerwise beam theory (LBT). The EMBT is improved by including coupling effects in the formulation. In the present study, the natural frequencies are calculated using modified EMBT for hybrid composite tube shafts and results are in good match with numerical and experimental work. The of position of CNT inserted layer and amount of CNT added to CFRP, GFRP, and hybrid of CFRP and GFRP composite tube shafts are analyzed. © 2018, © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

The effect of CNT to enhance the dynamic properties of hybrid composite tube shafts

With ever-increasing demand for higher flexibility and higher speeds of operation of high-speed rotating machinery, study of their unbalance responses and stability are of paramount importance. For easier maintenance and transport, weight of such systems is also a critical criterion. In the present study, optimum design parameters of a rotor-bearing system are found by employing multiple multiobjective optimization schemes for simultaneously minimizing unbalance response, maximizing stability limit speed, and minimizing system weight. This is an improvement over previous systems where simple equal weighting of multiple objective functions is carried out to reduce computational challenges. The shaft is assumed to be hollow and modeled as an assembly of 10 two-noded Euler–Bernoulli beam elements with an isotropic disc mounted on it. Genetic algorithm and its multiobjective variant (NSGA-II) are used to find the global optima. The technique of goal programming is identified as a more practical and less computationally challenging alternative to Pareto-based optimization, while yielding an approximate optimum. Complexities arising due to gyroscopic effects and dynamic nature of anisotropic fluid film bearings are also considered, along with practical upper and lower bounds of design variables and maximum von Mises stress developed in the system as constraints. © IMechE 2018.

Multiobjective optimization of rotor-bearing systems with an investigation of goal programming approach

This paper presents gradKCCA, a large-scale sparse non-linear canonical correlation method. Like Kernel Canonical Correlation Analysis (KCCA), our method finds non-linear relations through kernel functions, but it does not rely on a kernel matrix, a known bottleneck for scaling up kernel methods. gradKCCA corresponds to solving KCCA with the additional constraint that the canonical projection directions in the kernel-induced feature space have prcimages in the original data space. Firstly, this modification allows us to very efficiently maximize kernel canonical correlation through an alternating projected gradient algorithm working in the original data space. Secondly, we can control the sparsity of the projection directions by constraining the l norm of the preimages of the projection directions, facilitating the interpretation of the discovered patterns, which is not available through KCCA. Our empirical experiments demonstrate that gradKCCA outperforms state-of-the-art CCA methods in terms of speed and robustness to noise both in simulated and real-world datasets. © 36th International Conference on Machine Learning, ICML 2019. Engineering behavior of oil shale under high pressure after thermal treatment

In this paper, we study the Boolean function parameters sensitivity ((Formula Presented) ), block sensitivity ((Formula Presented) ), and alternation ((Formula Presented) ) under specially designed affine transforms and show several applications. For a function (Formula Presented), and (Formula Presented) for (Formula Presented) and (Formula Presented), the result of the transformation g is defined as (Formula Presented). As a warm up, we study alternation under linear shifts (when M is restricted to be the identity matrix) called the shift invariant alternation (the smallest alternation that can be achieved for the Boolean function f by shifts, denoted by (Formula Presented) ). By a result of Lin and Zhang [12], it follows that (Formula Presented). Thus, to settle the Sensitivity Conjecture ((Formula Presented) ), it suffices to argue that (Formula Presented). However, we exhibit an explicit family of Boolean functions for which (Formula Presented) is (Formula Presented). Going further, we use an affine transform A, such that the corresponding function g satisfies (Formula Presented), to prove that for (Formula Presented), the bounded error quantum communication complexity of F with prior entanglement, (Formula Presented) is (Formula Presented). Our proof builds on ideas from Sherstov [17] where we use specific properties of the above affine transformation. Using this, we show the following. (a)For a fixed prime p and an (Formula Presented), any Boolean function f that depends on all its inputs with (Formula Presented) must satisfy (Formula Presented). Here, (Formula Presented) denotes the degree of the multilinear polynomial over (Formula Presented) which agrees with f on Boolean inputs.(b)For Boolean function f such that there exists primes p and q with (Formula Presented) for (Formula Presented), the deterministic communication complexity - (Formula Presented) and (Formula Presented) are polynomially related. In particular, this holds when (Formula Presented). Thus, for this class of functions, this answers an open question (see [2]) about the relation between the two measures. Restricting back to the linear setting, we construct linear transformation A, such that the corresponding function g satisfies, (Formula Presented). Sensitivity, Affine Transforms and Quantum Communication Complexity

A fully coupled formulation is presented for sound radiation from a finite flexible perforated panel set in an infinite rigid unperforated baffle. The panel is excited by a point harmonic force and radiates sound into the acoustic medium on both sides of the baffle. Prior to coupling with the fluid, the change in the inertial and stiffness properties of the panel due to perforations and their effect on the in vacuo natural frequencies and mode shapes are accounted for using the receptance method. The coupled acoustic and structural equations are formulated using the 2-D wavenumber transforms. Since the formulation is in terms of the panel velocity, a certain square root singularity that typically appears in the denominator is avoided. The self- and inter-modal coupling coefficients are evaluated either analytically or numerically. The radiated power, panel mean quadratic velocity and radiation efficiency plots are obtained for different perforation ratios for both center and off-center excitations. At first, our formulation is validated against an unperforated case using a study available in the literature. Next, for our perforated panel case, we assume that both the half-spaces are filled with the acoustic fluid. It is observed that the radiation efficiency decreases with the increase in the perforation ratio, irrespective of the surrounding acoustic medium. However, for the water-loaded panel, the radiation efficiency is found to be lower than when the panel is immersed in air. It is found that for a light fluid like air, a one-way coupled formulation is adequate. The natural frequencies of a water-loaded perforated panel are also presented. It is found that for a given mode, the natural frequency increases with increase in the perforation ratio. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Sound radiation from a finite perforated panel set in a rigid baffle: A fully coupled analysis

The eternal vertex cover problem is a variant of the classical vertex cover problem where a set of guards on the vertices have to be dynamically reconfigured from one vertex cover to another in every round of an attacker-defender game. The minimum number of guards required to protect a graph from an infinite sequence of attacks is the eternal vertex cover number (evc) of the graph. It is known that, given a graph G and an integer k, checking whether (G)≤k is NP-Hard. However, for any graph G, (Formula presentd), where mvc(G) is the minimum vertex cover number of G. Precise value of eternal vertex cover number is known only for certain very basic graph classes like trees, cycles and grids. Though a characterization is known for graphs for which evc(G) = 2 mvc(G), a characterization of graphs for which evc(G) = mvc(G) remained open. Here, we achieve such a characterization for a class of graphs that includes chordal graphs and internally triangulated planar graphs. For some graph classes including biconnected chordal graphs, our characterization leads to a polynomial time algorithm to precisely determine evc(G) and to determine a safe strategy of guard movement in each round of the game with evc(G) guards. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

On graphs with minimal eternal vertex cover number

The current paper presents the formulation of stochastic B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI) based wavelet finite element method (WFEM) for one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) problems in elasto-statics wherein, the spatial variation of modulus of elasticity is modelled as a homogeneous random field. Random field discretization is done using BSWI scaling functions. Perturbation approach is used to calculate the response statistics. The results are compared with that obtained from Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and a parametric study is carried out by considering different coefficient of variation values by varying the standard deviation. For 1D problem in particular, results from proposed stochastic WFEM method are compared with those found using stochastic finite element method (FEM) wherein random field discretization is done using Lagrange shape functions. A comparative study of the computational time needed for the execution of perturbation approach and MCS based on WFEM and FEM is also performed. © 2019

A stochastic B-spline wavelet on the interval finite element method for problems in elasto-statics

The layered honeycomb iridate α-Li2IrO3 displays an incommensurate magnetic structure with counter-rotating moments on nearest-neighbor sites, proposed to be stabilized by strongly frustrated anisotropic Kitaev interactions between spin-orbit entangled Ir4+ magnetic moments. Here we report powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements that observe sharply dispersive low-energy magnetic excitations centered at the magnetic ordering wave vector, attributed to Goldstone excitations of the incommensurate order, as well as an additional intense mode above a gap Δ≃2.3 meV. Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements show clear oscillations in the muon polarization below the Néel temperature TN≃15 K with a time-dependent profile consistent with bulk incommensurate long-range magnetism. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements observe that only about half the saturation magnetization value is reached at the maximum field of 64 T. A clear anomaly near 25 T indicates a transition to a phase with reduced susceptibility. The transition field has a Zeeman energy comparable to the zero-field gapped mode, suggesting gap suppression as a possible mechanism for the field-induced transition. © 2019 American Physical Society.
