Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Energy harvesting wireless networks have become a reality in recent years. Designing policies that store and utilize the harvested energy, for achieving the desired network performance, remains one of the key challenges in such networks. To this end, based on the quality of monitoring, we formulate a long-Term time-Averaged joint scheduling and sensing allocation problem in wireless sensor networks with finite energy and data buffers, subject to certain data and battery quality-of-service constraints. Relaxing the finite energy buffer assumption, using virtual queues and techniques from Lyapunov optimization, we obtain the JSSA algorithm. We show that by appropriately choosing the control parameter of the JSSA algorithm, we can achieve a performance gap that decays inversely proportional to the battery capacity. The implementation overhead of the JSSA algorithm scales as O(n). Therefore, we also present a low-complexity distributed version of this algorithm whose implementation overhead scales as O(\log n). © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Joint Scheduling and Sensing Allocation in Energy Harvesting Sensor Networks with Fusion Centers

The angle of internal friction of sands from direct shear tests and plane strain tests is reported to be higher by about 2–8° compared to the triaxial compression tests. However, information about the comparison for the case of fine grained soils is scarce in the literature. In the present study a comparison of the results of a series of direct shear tests and triaxial compression tests on three fine grained soils is made. The angle of internal friction obtained from triaxial test is found to be more than that obtained from direct shear tests for fine grained soils. The likely reason is attributed to the presence of plate shaped clay sized particles through experiments carried out on sand mixed with plastic discs. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Drained angle of internal friction from direct shear and triaxial compression tests

The present work investigates the method of depositing a ceramic coating on the surface of aluminum by means of electrical discharge coating (EDC) in electrical discharge machining (EDM). The present study makes use of powder metallurgy (P/M) green compacts made of titanium, boron carbide, and aluminum (Ti + B4C + Al) powder as the EDM tool for surface modification of aluminum workpieces. EDM process was carried out with different tool parameters like composition of the electrode material, compaction pressure of the green compacts, and different settings of the process variables like peak current and pulse duration setting. Responses observed were material deposition rate (MDR), tool wear rate (TWR), and average layer thickness (LT). Experiments were designed and carried out using Taguchi L18 orthogonal array. The most influential parameter for responses MDR, TWR, and LT was found to be peak current (IP) with a percentage contribution of 60.72%, 59.52%, and 42.09%, respectively. In addition, various other characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDX) analysis were performed in order to judge different attributes of the deposited coating. Deposition and Analysis of Composite Coating on Aluminum Using Ti-B 4C Powder Metallurgy Tools in EDM

Present investigations are centered on passive control of shock wave boundary layer interaction (SWBLI) for double cone and double wedge configurations with leading edge bluntness. This study seeks the differences in the flow physics of SWBLI in case of two dimensional (2D) and axisymmetric flow fields. In-house developed second order accurate finite-volume 2D axisymmetric compressible flow solver is employed for these studies. It is observed that the idea of leading edge bluntness offers reduction in separation bubble for 2D flow fields, whereas it leads to enhanced separation zone in case of axisymmetric flow fields. Relevant flow physics is well explored herein using wall pressure profile and relative thicknesses of boundary layer and entropy layer. Thicker entropy layer and stronger favorable pressure gradient are found responsible for the possibility of separation control in case of 2D flow fields. Thin entropy layer due to three dimensional relieving effect and its swallowing by the boundary layer are attributed for higher separation bubble size in case of cone with range of radii under consideration. © 2016 Elsevier Inc.

Analysis of dimensionality effect on shock wave boundary layer interaction in laminar hypersonic flows

Heterogeneity of features and lack of correspondence between data points of different domains are the two primary challenges while performing feature transfer. In this paper, we present a novel supervised domain adaptation algorithm (SHDA-RF) that learns the mapping between heterogeneous features of different dimensions. Our algorithm uses the shared label distributions present across the domains as pivots for learning a sparse feature transformation. The shared label distributions and the relationship between the feature spaces and the label distributions are estimated in a supervised manner using random forests. We conduct extensive experiments on three diverse datasets of varying dimensions and sparsity to verify the superiority of the proposed approach over other baseline and state of the art transfer approaches.

Supervised Heterogeneous Domain Adaptation via Random Forests

We study an integrable spin chain with three spin interactions and the staggered field (λ) while the latter is quenched either slowly [in a linear fashion in time (t) as t/τ, where t goes from a large negative value to a large positive value and τ is the inverse rate of quenching] or suddenly. In the process, the system crosses quantum critical points and gapless phases. We address the question whether there exist nonanalyticities [known as dynamical phase transitions (DPTs)] in the subsequent real-time evolution of the state (reached following the quench) governed by the final time-independent Hamiltonian. In the case of sufficiently slow quenching (when τ exceeds a critical value τ1), we show that DPTs, of the form similar to those occurring for quenching across an isolated critical point, can occur even when the system is slowly driven across more than one critical point and gapless phases. More interestingly, in the anisotropic situation we show that DPTs can completely disappear for some values of the anisotropy term (γ) and τ, thereby establishing the existence of boundaries in the (γ-τ) plane between the DPT and no-DPT regions in both isotropic and anisotropic cases. Our study therefore leads to a unique situation when DPTs may not occur even when an integrable model is slowly ramped across a QCP. On the other hand, considering sudden quenches from an initial value λi to a final value λf, we show that the condition for the presence of DPTs is governed by relations involving λi,λf, and γ, and the spin chain must be swept across λ=0 for DPTs to occur. © 2016 American Physical Society.

Tuning the presence of dynamical phase transitions in a generalized XY spin chain

We summarize our studies on neutrino-driven nucleosynthesis in He shells of early core-collapse supernovae with metallicities of Z ≤ 10-3 ZȮ. We find that for progenitors of ∼ 11-15 MȮ, the neutrons released by 4He(ν¯ee, e+n)3H in He shells can be captured to produce nuclei with mass numbers up to A ∼ 200. This mechanism is sensitive to neutrino emission spectra and flavor oscillations. In addition, we find two new primary mechanisms for neutrino-induced production of 9Be in He shells. The first mechanism produces 9Be via 7Li(n,γ)8Li(n,γ)9Li(e- ν¯ee)9Be and relies on a low explosion energy for its survival. The second mechanism operates in progenitors of ∼ 8 MȮ, where 9Be can be produced directly via 7Li(3H, n0)9Be during the rapid expansion of the shocked Heshell material. The light nuclei 7Li and 3H involved in these mechanisms are produced by neutrino interactions with 4He. We discuss the implications of neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis in He shells for interpreting the elemental abundances in metal-poor stars. © 2016 Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Neutrino-Induced Nucleosynthesis in Helium Shells of Early Core-Collapse Supernovae

Polyreactive antibodies represent a considerable fraction of the immune repertoires. Some antibodies acquire polyreactivity post-translationally after interaction with various redox-active substances, including heme. Recently we have demonstrated that heme binding to a naturally polyreactive antibody (SPE7) results in a considerable broadening of the repertoire of recognized antigens. A question remains whether the presence of certain level of natural polyreactivity of antibodies is a prerequisite for heme-induced further extension of antigen binding potential. Here we used a second monoclonal antibody (Hg32) with unknown specificity and absence of intrinsic polyreactivity as a model to study the potential of heme to induce polyreactivity of antibodies. We demonstrated that exposure to heme greatly extends the antigen binding potential of Hg32, suggesting that the intrinsic binding promiscuity is not a prerequisite for the induction of polyreactivity by heme. In addition we compared the kinetics and thermodynamics of the interaction of heme-exposed antibodies with a panel of unrelated antigens. These analyses revealed that the two heme-sensitive antibodies adopt different mechanisms of binding to the same set of antigens. This study contributes to understanding the phenomenon of induced antibody polyreactivity. The data may also be of importance for understanding of physiological and pathological roles of polyreactive antibodies. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Relationship between natural and heme-mediated antibody polyreactivity

The Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling (ADC) of alcohols with amines is reported using a heterogeneous Fe-catalyst. The reaction operates under mild conditions with the liberation of dihydrogen and water as the byproducts. The developed ADC strategy is simple, efficient, exhibits wide functional group tolerance and can be scaled up. The present catalytic approach possesses a dual role; acting as a catalyst as well as being magnetically separable. The sustainable reuse of a heterogeneous iron catalyst is also shown. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Sustainable iron-catalyzed direct imine formation by acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with amines

Cellular metabolites, such as acyl-CoA, can modify proteins, leading to protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs). One such PTM is lysine succinylation, which is regulated by sirtuin 5 (SIRT5). Although numerous proteins are modified by lysine succinylation, the physiological significance of lysine succinylation and SIRT5 remains elusive. Here, by profiling acyl-CoA molecules in various mouse tissues, we have discovered that different tissues have different acyl-CoA profiles and that succinyl-CoA is the most abundant acyl-CoA molecule in the heart. This interesting observation has prompted us to examine protein lysine succinylation in different mouse tissues in the presence and absence of SIRT5. Protein lysine succinylation predominantly accumulates in the heart when Sirt5 is deleted. Using proteomic studies, we have identified many cardiac proteins regulated by SIRT5. Our data suggest that ECHA, a protein involved in fatty acid oxidation, is a major enzyme that is regulated by SIRT5 and affects heart function. Sirt5 knockout (KO) mice have lower ECHA activity, increased longchain acyl-CoAs, and decreased ATP in the heart under fasting conditions. Sirt5 KO mice develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, as evident from the increased heart weight relative to body weight, as well as reduced shortening and ejection fractions. These findings establish that regulating heart metabolism and function is a major physiological function of lysine succinylation and SIRT5.
