Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

We have studied magnetodielectric and spin-lattice coupling in CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ single crystals. Magnetostriction and magnetodielectric experiments are performed at temperatures in and above antifferomagnetic phase of quasi 1D Ising spin chain CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Field induced magnetic transitions are clearly reflected in magnetodielectric measurement as well as magnetostriction measurement also. Two sharp anomalies are found around the critical fields of antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition and ferrimagnetic to saturated paramagnetic transition in both magnetodielectric and magnetostriction experiments. High field anomaly is more pronounced for magnetodielectric response and magnetostriction also. So, in CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$, spins are strongly coupled with lattice as well as charges also.

Magnetodielectric and spin-lattice coupling in quasi 1D Ising spin chain CoNb$_{2}$O$_{6}$

This study addresses the design of nonlinear elastic springs that render an effective re-centering mechanism for a flat sliding base isolation system. A nonlinear stiffening behavior of the elastic spring offers added advantage of re-centering mechanism. The proposed spring-sliding system works in a similar fashion as that of the flat sliding base isolation system supplemented with re-centering mechanism for small to medium level of shaking. For high intensity shaking, the proposed system minimizes the peak bearing displacement in addition to keeping the bearing residual displacement close to zero. To demonstrate the concept of the proposed isolation system, a numerical study is conducted with a steel moment-resisting frame when subjected to ground motions of varying hazard levels. It has been found from this study that the proposed spring-sliding device is effective in limiting the peak bearing displacement and making the residual bearing displacement negligible for varying hazard levels. It has also been observed that the presence of nonlinear spring is in general beneficial in reducing the horizontal peak floor acceleration in comparison to the sliding only for ground motion with moderate hazard levels (i.e., 10% in 50 years). © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Design of re-centering spring for flat sliding base isolation system: Theory and a numerical study

The objective of this research paper was to present the rheological investigations of crumb-rubber modified (CRM) bitumen binders in order to evaluate their rutting performance at high temperatures. Crumb rubber obtained from discarded vehicle tires was used to blend virgin viscosity grade VG10 binder. CRM binders were produced in the laboratory by blending crumb rubber with VG10 binder at various rubber proportions (5, 15, and 25% by weight of the virgin binder). In addition to the laboratory prepared CRM binders (VG10+5%, VG10+15%, and VG10+25%), three virgin viscosity grade binders VG10, VG30 and VG40, and one commercially available modified binder CRMB 60 were considered for the study. Conventional consistency tests and advanced rheological tests were performed on all the seven binders. Oscillatory tests were carried out to obtain relationships of G∗ (complex shear modulus) and δ (phase angle), and to understand the rutting and fatigue performance. Furthermore, Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) tests were conducted at two stress levels on short-Term aged samples at 60 oC chiefly to verify the elastic response of binders. Rutting performance evaluation of crumb rubber modified binders using advanced rheological test parameters

Dynamic analysis of wind turbine drive train subjected to stochastic aerodynamic loads is carried out in the present study. The longitudinal wind speed at the turbine site normally consists of a mean value superimposed with ramp, gust and turbulence components. In the present study, the aerodynamic torque is obtained by considering wind speed parameters of a typical wind turbine site. The dynamic model accounts for time varying gear mesh stiffness, bearing elasticity and torsional shaft stiffness. The dynamic analysis is done with stochastic aerodynamic loads and the vibration responses are obtained in time and frequency domains. It is observed that the entire spectral content of the vibration signals is confined to low frequency region, whereas higher frequencies are hidden. In order to capture the hidden frequency information from vibration signals, the wavelet decomposition technique is used. The dynamic analysis using torque signals is also discussed. The present study shows that, from the internal resistive torque all the characteristic frequencies can be clearly observed. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Wind turbine drive train dynamic characterization using vibration and torque signals

We show that the frequency distribution of the first significant digits of the numbers in the data sets generated from a large class of measures of quantum correlations, which are either entanglement measures or belong to the information-theoretic paradigm, exhibit a universal behavior. In particular, for Haar uniformly simulated arbitrary two-qubit states, we find that the first-digit distributions corresponding to a collection of chosen computable quantum correlation quantifiers tend to follow the first-digit law, known as Benford's law, when the rank of the states increases. Considering a two-qubit state which is obtained from a system governed by paradigmatic spin Hamiltonians, namely, the XY model in a transverse field, and the XXZ model, we show that entanglement as well as information-theoretic measures violate Benford's law. We quantitatively discuss the violation of Benford's law by using a violation parameter, and demonstrate that the violation parameter can signal quantum phase transitions occurring in these models. We also comment on the universality of the statistics of the first significant digits corresponding to appropriate measures of quantum correlations in the case of multipartite systems as well as systems in higher dimensions. © CopyrightEPLA, 2016.

Statistics of leading digits leads to unification of quantum correlations

Al-Zn-Mg alloys are widely used as structural materials due to high strength-to-weight ratio and impact toughness. As fusion welds in these alloys commonly face hot cracking and macro porosity, friction stir welding is increasingly becoming the preferred recourse. We report here a detailed experimental study on friction stir welding of a specific Al-Zn-Mg alloy with its chemical compositions close to AA7039. The effect of tool rotational speed and welding speed on the weld profile, joint microstructure, and mechanical properties is studied extensively. The results show sound weld profiles and joint properties within the selected range of process conditions. Within the selected range of welding conditions, the welds made at a tool rotational speed of 350 rpm and welding speed of 3 mm/s have showed joint structure, tensile, and impact toughness properties fairly close to that of the base material. © 2016, ASM International.

This paper studies forward and reverse projections for the Renyi divergence of order $\alpha$ ∈ (0, ∞) on $\alpha$-convex sets. The forward projection on such a set is motivated by some works of Tsallis et al. in statistical physics and the reverse projection is motivated by robust statistics. In a recent work, van Erven and Harremoes proved a Pythagorean inequality for Renyi divergences on $\alpha$-convex sets under the assumption that the forward projection exists. Continuing this study, a sufficient condition for the existence of a forward projection is proved for probability measures on a general alphabet. For $\alpha$ ∈ (1, ∞), the proof relies on a new Apollonius theorem for the Hellinger divergence and for $\alpha$ ∈ (0,1), the proof relies on the Banach-Alaoglu theorem from the functional analysis. Further projection results are then obtained in the finite alphabet setting. These include a projection theorem on a specific $\alpha$-convex set, which is termed an $\alpha$-linear family, generalizing a result by Csiszar to $\alpha$ ≠ 1. The solution to this problem yields a parametric family of probability measures, which turns out to be an extension of the exponential family and it is termed an $\alpha$-exponential family. An orthogonality relationship between the $\alpha$-exponential and $\alpha$-linear families is established and it is used to turn the reverse projection on an $\alpha$-exponential family into a forward projection on an $\alpha$-linear family. This paper also proves a convergence result of an iterative procedure used to calculate the forward projection on an intersection of a finite number of $\alpha$-linear families.
