Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

The urban transportation network is susceptible to degradation in its performance because of various measures. It would be of interest to a planner if this risk can be quantified. In this paper, we present a methodology to do so by estimating the n most probable states of a network. A particular network state is a combination of capacity levels on all links and is defined by defining the different capacity levels at which all the links are operating at. The probability of occurrence of that state would be the product of probabilities of occurrence of capacities of all links. Suppose there are m links and n capacity levels. Each link can function in any of the n capacity levels. So the maximum number of states enumerated would be nm. A most probable state (MPS) is that state which has highest probability to function on a network. For each state consequence were found out. Consequence is the extent of variation from the minimum system travel time. Thus a graph is plotted between the consequence and the probability of its occurrence for all the states of the network. Risk associated to the network is defined by the probability for an event of negative impact to occur and the extent of the resulting consequence once this event has taken place. The routing assumed was static user equilibrium.

Quantifying Risk Due to Capacity Uncertainty on Urban Road Networks

We study projective dimension, a graph parameter (denoted by pd(G) for a graph G), introduced by Pudlák and Rödl (1992). For a Boolean function f(on n bits), Pudlák and Rödl associated a bipartite graph Gf and showed that size of the optimal branching program computing f (denoted by bpsize(f)) is at least pd(Gf) (also denoted by pd(f)). Hence, proving lower bounds for pd(f) imply lower bounds for bpsize(f). Despite several attempts (Pudlák and Rödl (1992), Rónyai et.al, (2000)), proving super-linear lower bounds for projective dimension of explicit families of graphs has remained elusive. We observe that there exist a Boolean function f for which the gap between the pd(f) and bpsize(f)) is 2Ω(n). Motivated by the argument in Pudlák and Rödl (1992), we define two variants of projective dimension - projective dimension with intersection dimension 1 (denoted by upd(f)) and bitwise decomposable projective dimension (denoted by bpdim(f)). We show the following results: (a) We observe that there exist a Boolean function f for which the gap between upd(f) and bpsize(f) is 2Ω(n). In contrast, we also show that the bitwise decomposable projective dimension characterizes size of the branching program up to a polynomial factor. That is, there exists a large constant c &gt; 0 and for any function f, bpdim(f)/6 ≤ bpsize(f) ≤ (bpdim(f))c. (b) We introduce a new candidate function family f for showing super-polynomial lower bounds for bpdim(f). As our main result, we demonstrate gaps between pd(f) and the above two new measures for f: pd(f) = O(√n) upd(f) = Ω(n) bpdim(f) = Ω(n1.5/log n). (c) Although not related to branching program lower bounds, we derive exponential lower bounds for two restricted variants of pd(f) and upd(f) respectively by observing that they are exactly equal to well-studied graph parameters - bipartite clique cover number and bipartite partition number respectively. © Krishnamoorthy Dinesh, Sajin Koroth, and Jayalal Sarma.

Characterization and lower bounds for branching program size using projective dimension

Fabless semiconductor industry and government agencies have raised serious concerns about tampering with inserting hardware Trojans (HTs) in an integrated circuit supply chain in recent years. In this paper, a low hardware overhead acceleration method of the detection of HTs based on the insertion of 2-to-1 MUXs as test points is proposed. In the proposed method, the fact that one logical gate has a significant impact on the transition probability of the logical gates in its logical fan-out cone is utilized to optimize the number of the inserted MUXs. The nets which have smaller transition probability than the user-specified threshold and minimal logical depth from the primary inputs are selected as the candidate nets. As for each candidate net, only its input net with smallest signal probability is required to be inserted the MUXs-based test points. The procedure repeats until the minimal transition probability of the entire circuit is not smaller than the threshold value. In order to further optimize the number of required insertions and reduce the overhead, the weighted random pattern technique is also applied. Experiment results on ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits show that our proposed method can achieve remarkable improvement of transition probability with on average 9.50% power, 2.37% delay, and 10.26% area penalty. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Cost-efficient Acceleration of Hardware Trojan Detection Through Fan-Out Cone Analysis and Weighted Random Pattern Technique

Axis switching in non-circular tube burner flame jets is studied. Experimental data of heat flux is obtained for square and rectangular burners of different aspect ratios: 1, 1.55, 2.1 and 3.73. A three dimensional CFD simulation is carried out to explain the phenomenon of axis switching in premixed flame jets. From the CFD simulations it is observed that the vortices formed near the corner of the tube exit are responsible for the axis switching phenomenon. These vortices control the spreading (in a preferential manner) of the flame jet along the tube axis. This preferential spreading of the flame jet is responsible for switching of contours of heat flux on the impingement plate. Furthermore, for the rectangular burner, elliptical lobes of heat flux distribution on the impingement plate are observed and this is again attributed to vortex structures. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

This paper proposes a kinematically redundant planar manipulator for lower limb rehabilitation application, having configuration 4PRP. The challenges in the existing mechanisms has been analyzed and a new configuration is proposed. This configuration helps to improve the effective workspace of the lower limb rehabilitation robot. The lower limb rehabilitation systems are used to treat the post stroke patients and limb injured patients by providing rigorous exercises through the motor nerves recovery. This paper shows the advantages of the proposed 4-PRP kinematically redundant planar manipulator over existing 2PRP-2PPR in providing higher effective workspace with same capability in performing lower limb rehabilitation tasks. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2016.

A 4PRP redundant parallel planar manipulator for the purpose of lower limb rehabilitation

Control and guidance of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) is tedious process as it is an underactuated model where the numbers of inputs to the actuator are less than the number of degrees-of-freedom to be controlled; also the dynamics of AUV is affected by internal interruptions like sensor noise and exterior distractions namely hydrodynamic effects and ocean current. The difficulty of uncertainty in the vehicle dynamics can be handled by adaptive control, chosen based on its clarity using conventional controller like Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and also by intelligent Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC). To increase the quality of these autonomous systems, model-based control strategies such as Internal Model Control (IMC) and Model Predictive Control (MPC) has been focused in this paper. The control operation includes motion planning and trajectory generation tasks which provide the desired vehicle depth location as a function of time and subsequently the controller determines required stern angle position, based on the sensor measurements. The comparative result shows that Model based control strategies exhibits better performance than the classical controls. © 2016 IEEE.

Relative analysis of controller effectiveness for vertical plane control of an autonomous underwater vehicle

This paper presents a comparative analysis of three degrees of freedom planar parallel robotic manipulators (x, y and θz motion platforms) namely 2PRP-PPR, 2PRR-PPR, 3PPR (Hybrid), 3PRP (Hephaist) and 3PPR U-base in terms of optimal kinematic design performance, static structural stiffness and dynamic performance (energy and power consumption). Kinematic and dynamic performance analyses of these platforms have been done using multibody dynamics software (namely ADAMS/View). Static stiffness of the above-mentioned manipulators have been analysed, compared using the conventional joint space Jacobian stiffness matrix method, and this method has been verified through a standard finite-element software (namely NASTRAN) as well. The size of the fixed base or aspect ratio (width/height) can be varied for various working conditions to understand its design parameters and optimal design aspects which are depending on the fixed base structure. Different aspect ratios (fixed base size) are considered for the comparative analyses of isotropy, manipulability and stiffness for the above-mentioned planar parallel manipulators. From the numerical simulation results, it is observed that the 2PRP-PPR manipulator is associated with a few favourable optimum design aspects such as singularity-free workspace, better manipulability, isotropy, higher stiffness and better dynamic performance in terms of power and energy requirement as compared to other planar parallel manipulators. © 2016 Taylor & Francis and The Robotics Society of Japan.

Performance investigations on optimum mechanical design aspects of planar parallel manipulators

Inconel 706 is a recently developed superalloy for aircraft application, particularly in turbine disk which is among the most critical components in the gas turbine engines. Recently, wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) attained success in machining of gas turbine components which require complex shape profiles with high precision. To achieve the feasibility in machining of these components, the research work has been conducted on Inconel 706 superalloy using WEDM process. And, the effect of different wire materials (i.e., hard brass wire, diffused wire, and zinc-coated wire) on WEDM performance characteristics such as cutting speed, surface topography, surface roughness, recast layer formation, residual stresses, and microstructural and metallurgical alterations have been investigated. Even though, zinc-coated wire exhibits improved productivity, hard brass wire was found to be beneficial in terms of improved surface quality of the machined parts. Additionally, lower tensile residual stresses were obtained with hard brass wire. However, diffused wire has a moderate effect on productivity and surface quality. Under high discharge energy, higher elemental changes were observed and also the white layer was detected. © 2016, ASM International.
