Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

A study on the use of amorphous metallic fibers (AMFs) in concrete was undertaken to combine its action with that of hooked-ended steel fibers for improving flexural strength and toughness. Tests on mixtures with various dosages of AMF (10, 20 and 30 kg/m3 [16.9, 33.7 and 50.6 lb/yd3]) and 15 kg/m3 (25.3 lb/yd3) of steel fibers were carried out, along with hybrid mixtures with two dosages of AMF. The results showed a significant increase in the flexural strength of concrete with the addition of AMF, even at low dosages. The performance of concretes with the hybrid combinations is significantly enhanced. For example, the equivalent flexural strength for the concretes with just 10 kg/m3 (16.9 lb/yd3) of AMF and 15 kg/m3 (25.3 lb/yd3) of steel fibers is 35% higher than with only steel fibers and is approximately 3.5 times that obtained with only 10 kg/m3 (16.9 lb/yd3) of AMF. The load-deflection behavior and the toughness parameters clearly indicate a significant synergy in the hybrid combination.

Estimation of Thermal Contact Conductance Using Inverse Analysis

Increasing evidence has shown that mechanical cues from the environment play an important role in cell biology. Mechanotransduction or the study of how cells can sense these mechanical cues, and respond to them, is an active field of research. However, it is still not clear how cells sense and respond to mechanical cues. Thus, new tools are being rapidly developed to quantitatively study cell mechanobiology. Particularly, force measurement tools such as micropillar substrates have provided new insights into the underlying mechanisms of mechanosensing. In this chapter, we provide detailed protocol for fabrication, characterization, functionalization, and use of the micropillar substrates. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.

Micropillar substrates: A tool for studying cell mechanobiology

Magnesium reinforced with 0.7 volume percentage of yttria is considered to be one of the most promising light weight structural nanocomposite materials, whose performance was further enhanced with incorporation of 0.3 volume percentage of nano copper particles. Elongation-to-fracture tensile test revealed that the nano copper particle effectively maintained strengthening effect on magnesium-yttria nanocomposite at up to 100 °C and gradually diminished with further increase in test temperature used in this study. Nano copper particle induced impressive enhancement in magnesium-yttria nanocomposite and led to their potential near net shape fabrication in to intricate shaped objects at a substantially low temperature.

Effect of copper nano particles on high temperature tensile behavior of Mg-Y2O3 nanocomposite

The wind turbine drive train dynamic analysis is carried out with and without existence of gear tooth breakage. The loads acting on the wind turbine are considered based on Danish Standard DS472 which is a simplified method of taking loads in wind turbine. A broken gear tooth is modelled by the change in the gear tooth thickness. The gear mesh stiffness of broken tooth is evaluated by the change in cross sectional area and area moment of inertia due to change in tooth geometry. From the frequency representation of vibration data, the fault information is not clearly observed due to the insensitiveness of the dynamic system to the stochastic loads. However, by further analysis, fault information is obtained with the use of the gear tooth contact force from which a clear sub harmonics are observed at the defective pinion tooth frequency. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Effect of Gear Tooth Breakage on the Dynamic Response in a Wind Turbine Drive Train Subjected to Stochastic Load Excitation

In this paper we use Banach algebra techniques to study the spectrum, pseudospectrum and condition spectrum of a block Laurent operator with continuous symbol and a lower triangular block Toeplitz operator with continuous symbol. (1) Let L be a block Laurent operator with a continuous symbol f. Regarding f as an element of the Banach algebra of all continuous matrix valued functions defined on the unit circle Γ, we show that the spectrum σ(L) of L coincides with the spectrum σ(f) of f. It is also shown that the spectrum σ(f) can be expressed as a union of the spectra of matrices f(x). Thus Similar results are proved about pseudospectrum for ε &gt; 0 and condition spectrum σε(L) = σε(f) for 0 &lt; ε &lt; 1. (2) Let T be an upper or lower triangular block Toeplitz operator with continuous symbol f. Then f is a continuous matrix valued function defined on the closed unit disc and f is analytic in the open unit disc. It is proved that a similar description can be given about the spectrum σ(T), pseudospectrum Λε(T) for ε &gt; 0 and condition spectrum σε(T) for &lt; ε &lt; 1. These results are illustrated with examples and pictures using Matlab.

A NEW DIRECTION TO HIGHER ORDER COMPACT SCHEME FOR SOLVING IMMERSED INTERFACE PROBLEMS

This paper presents a methodology to quantify resilience of transportation networks that are subject to recurring capacity disruptions. System-optimal total travel time at full-capacities is usually adopted as a performance-benchmark on networks. Capacity degradation results in different capacity combinations, and thus, there can be different travel times. We thus compare the best network performance with an upper bound of network performance—indicating how much disruptions the network can take in before it displaces from a demand-meeting state to a demand-not-meeting state—and construct an index of network resilience. For this, we establish a critical state which is an upper bound of network cost under recurring capacity degradation. We define discrete capacity levels and search for probability values over those levels that would result in a critical state. We formulate the critical state link disruption problem as a minimax optimisation problem, where expected system travel time is maximised with respect to probability of recurrence and minimised with respect to link flow. We prove that the network cost is unique at the critical state, although the critical degradation need not be. We solve the minimax problem using a coevolutionary algorithm. We exemplify the formulation on test networks and quantify the improvement in network resilience by retrofitting the Sioux Falls network. © 2015 Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies Limited.
