Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Study of grouted deep foundations in cohesionless soils

Energy minimization is a critical issue and challenge when considering the cyclic dependency of leakage power and temperature as IC technology reaches deep sub-micron level. In this paper, we present an analytical method to calculate the energy consumption efficiently and effectively for a given voltage schedule on a multi-core platform, with the leakage/temperature dependency taken into consideration. Our experiments show that the proposed method can achieve a speedup of 15 times compared with the numerical method, with a relative error of no more than 1.5%. © 2013 IEEE.

An analytical solution for multi-core energy calculation with consideration of leakage and temperature dependency

A burning question in the emerging field of spin-orbit driven insulating iridates, such as Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO 3, is whether the observed insulating state should be classified as a Mott-Hubbard insulator derived from a half-filled relativistic j eff=1/2 band or as a band insulator where the gap is assisted by spin-orbit interaction or Coulomb correlations or both. The difference between these two interpretations is that only for the former strong spin-orbit coupling (λâ‰W, where W is the bandwidth) is essential. We have synthesized the isostructural and isoelectronic Li2RhO3 and report its electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Remarkably, it shows insulating behavior together with fluctuating effective S=1/2 moments, similar to Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3, although in Rh4+ (4d5) the spin-orbit coupling is greatly reduced. We show that this behavior has a nonrelativistic one-electron origin (although Coulomb correlations assist in opening the gap) and can be traced to the formation of quasimolecular orbitals, similar to those in Na2IrO 3. ©2013 American Physical Society.

Origin of the insulating state in honeycomb iridates and rhodates

Deciphering the multifactorial determinants of tumor progression requires standardized high-throughput preparation of 3D in vitro cellular assays. We present a simple microfluidic method based on the encapsulation and growth of cells inside permeable, elastic, hollow microspheres. We show that this approach enables mass production of size-controlled multicellular spheroids. Due to their geometry and elasticity, these microcapsules can uniquely serve as quantitative mechanical sensors to measure the pressure exerted by the expanding spheroid. By monitoring the growth of individual encapsulated spheroids after confluence, we dissect the dynamics of pressure buildup toward a steady-state value, consistent with the concept of homeostatic pressure. In turn, these confining conditions are observed to increase the cellular density and affect the cellular organization of the spheroid. Postconfluent spheroids exhibit a necrotic core cemented by a blend of extracellular material and surrounded by a rim of proliferating hypermotile cells. By performing invasion assays in a collagen matrix, we report that peripheral cells readily escape preconfined spheroids and cell-cell cohesivity is maintained for freely growing spheroids, suggesting that mechanical cues from the surrounding microenvironment may trigger cell invasion from a growing tumor. Overall, our technology offers a unique avenue to produce in vitro cell-based assays useful for developing new anticancer therapies and to investigate the interplay between mechanics and growth in tumor evolution.

Cellular capsules as a tool for multicellular spheroid production and for investigating the mechanics of tumor progression in vitro

Detection and correction of errors in digital data is an important issue for the modern communication systems. Therefore an efficient error control code is needed to protect the digital data. In high speed communication system Reed-Solomon codes are widely used to provide error protection especially against the burst errors. Reed-Solomon codes are cyclic, non-binary codes. In this paper RS(255, 251)encoder and decoder have been designed and implemented on an FPGA platform. Index Terms—Reed-Solomon codes, Galois field, RS encoder, RS decoder.

Calibration of Distributed Hydrologic Models Considering the Heterogeneity of the Parameters across the Basin

Recently, a large number of studies have been carried out on the early signatures of sudden regime shifts in systems as diverse as ecosystems, financial markets, population biology and complex diseases. The signatures of regime shifts in gene expression dynamics are less systematically investigated. In this paper, we consider sudden regime shifts in the gene expression dynamics described by a fold-bifurcation model involving bistability and hysteresis. We consider two alternative models, models 1 and 2, of competence development in the bacterial population B. subtilis and determine some early signatures of the regime shifts between competence and noncompetence. We use both deterministic and stochastic formalisms for the purpose of our study. The early signatures studied include the critical slowing down as a transition point is approached, rising variance and the lag-1 autocorrelation function, skewness and a ratio of two mean first passage times. Some of the signatures could provide the experimental basis for distinguishing between bistability and excitability as the correct mechanism for the development of competence. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Early signatures of regime shifts in gene expression dynamics

Diverse complex dynamical systems are known to exhibit abrupt regime shifts at bifurcation points of the saddle-node type. The dynamics of most of these systems, however, have a stochastic component resulting in noise-driven regime shifts even if the system is away from the bifurcation points. In this paper, we propose a new quantitative measure, namely, the propensity transition point as an indicator of stochastic regime shifts. The concepts and the methodology are illustrated for the one-variable May model, a well-known model in ecology and the genetic toggle, a two-variable model of a simple genetic circuit. The general applicability and usefulness of the method for the analysis of regime shifts is further demonstrated in the case of the mycobacterial switch to persistence for which experimental data are available. © EDP Sciences/ Società Italiana di Fisica/ Springer-Verlag 2013.
