Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Thermolysis of [(Cp*RuCO)2B2H6] (1; Cp* = η5-C5Me5) with [Ru 3(CO)12] yielded the trimetallaborane [(Cp*RuCO) 3(μ3-H)BH] (2) and a number of homometallic boride clusters: [Cp*RuCO{Ru(CO)3}4B] (3), [(Cp*Ru)2{Ru2(CO)8}BH] (4) and [(Cp*Ru)2{Ru4(CO)12}BH] (5). Compound 2 is isoelectronic and isostructural with the triply bridged borylene compounds [(μ3-BH)(Cp*RuCO)2(μ-CO){Fe(CO)3}] (6) and [(μ3-BH)(Cp*RuCO)2(μ-H)(μ-CO) {Mn(CO)3}] (7), where the [μ3-BH] moiety occupies the apical position. To test if compound 2 undergoes hydroboration reactions with alkynes, as observed with 6, we performed the reaction of 2 with the same set of alkynes under photolytic conditions. However, neither 2 nor 7 undergoes hydroboration to yield a vinyl-borylene complex. On the other hand, thermolysis of 6 with trimethylsilylethylene yielded the novel diruthenacarborane [1,1,7,7,7-(CO)5-2,3-(Cp*)2-μ-2,3-(CO) -μ3-1,2,3-(CO)-5-(SiMe3)-pileo-1,7,2,3,4,5-Fe 2Ru2C2BH] (8). The solid-state X-ray diffraction results suggest that 8 exhibits a pentagonal -bipyramidal geometry with one additional CO capping one of its faces. Cluster 3 is a boride cluster where boron is in the interstitial position of a square-pyramidal geometry, whereas compound 4 can be described as a tetraruthenium boride in which the Ru4 butterfly skeleton has an interstitial boron atom. Electronic structure calculations of compound 2 employing density functional theory (DFT) generate geometries in agreement with the structure determinations. The existence of a large HOMO-LUMO gap in 2 is in agreement with its high stability. Bonding patterns in the structure have been analyzed on the grounds of DFT calculations. Furthermore, the B3LYP-computed 11B and 1H chemical shifts for compound 2 precisely follow the experimentally measured values. All the compounds have been characterized by IR and 1H, 11B and 13C NMR spectroscopy and the geometries of the structures were unambiguously established by crystallographic analyses of 2-4 and 8. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Chemistry of homo-and heterometallic bridged-borylene complexes

We study inextensional vibrations of zig-zag single-walled carbon nanotubes using nonlocal elasticity theories and molecular mechanics simulations employing MM3 potential. We find that the frequency expressions for the Rayleigh and Love modes of inextensional vibrations, predicted by the stress and strain gradient theories, differ from the classical continuum theory expressions by a multiplicative factor only. The factor is different for stress and strain gradient theories. We also observe that the strain gradient theory with positive sign exhibits a saturation-like behavior of the inextensional mode frequency with the circumferential wave number. Using this fact and molecular mechanics simulation data we derive an expression for the nonlocal parameter. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Inextensional vibration of zig-zag single-walled carbon nanotubes using nonlocal elasticity theories

Clays treated with lower cement contents often exhibit behaviour similar to stiff clays with planar failure surface under triaxial compression. In the present work the behaviour of a marine clay treated with 5 % cement, subjected to undrained triaxial compression tests is studied. The pre-consolidation pressure of the cemented clay due to the cementation bonding is observed to be very high. It is attempted to model the behaviour of cement treated clay using a bounding surface plasticity formulation as the plastic behaviour of the cemented clays within the yield surface has to be considered. The effect of cementation is included in the model as the pre-consolidation pressure obtained from consolidation tests. The tensile strength due to cementation bonds is included in the equation of the bounding surface. Simulations of the undrained triaxial compression tests on cemented clays are carried out and the results are validated with the experimental results. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Undrained Triaxial Behavior of Cement Treated Marine Clay

This study addresses the detailed modeling and simulation of the dynamic coupling between an underwater vehicle and manipulator system. The dynamic coupling effects due to damping, restoring, and inertial effects of an underwater manipulator mounted on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) are analyzed by considering the actuator and sensor characteristics. A model reference control (MRC) scheme is proposed for the underwater vehicle-manipulator system (UVMS). The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated using numerical simulations along with comparative study between conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control. The robustness of the proposed control scheme is also illustrated in the presence of external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. © 2013 Mohan Santhakumar.

Modelling and Simulation in Engineering

Investigation into the dynamics and control of an underwater vehicle-manipulator system

Aero-elastic excitation can result in excessive blade vibration, which can cause blades to fail in high cycle fatigue (HCF). A severe aero-elastic failure can result in a complete blade separation and loss of thrust and loss of a blade can mean the loss of an aircraft. The primary aeromechanical design concerns are blade flutter and forced vibration that need to be quantified at the early part of engine tests. This paper details the experimental investigation carried out on a transonic shroud-less low aspect ratio fan bladed disk that experienced subsonic/transonic stall flutter and forced vibration excitation. Experiments are performed on a full scale engine using tip timing sensors flush mounted on the fan casing to characterize the vibratory responses during flutter and forced vibration conditions during engine operation. Numerical simulations are performed using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. Blade natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained from finite element (FE) modal analysis. The experimental data captured from engine tests are used to validate the predicted results. Copyright © 2013 by ASME.

Flutter and forced vibration characteristics of a turbo fan bladed disk rotor

The disappearance of the guanosine triphosphate- (GTP) tubulin cap is widely believed to be the forerunner event for the growth-shrinkage transition ("catastrophe") in microtubule filaments in eukaryotic cells. We study a discrete version of a stochastic model of the GTP cap dynamics, originally proposed by Flyvbjerg, Holy, and Leibler. Our model includes both spontaneous and vectorial hydrolysis, as well as dissociation of a nonhydrolyzed dimer from the filament after incorporation. In the first part of the paper, we apply this model to a single protofilament of a microtubule. A catastrophe transition is defined for each protofilament, similarly to the earlier one-dimensional models, the frequency of occurrence of which is then calculated under various conditions but without explicit assumption of steady-state conditions. Using a perturbative approach, we show that the leading asymptotic behavior of the protofilament catastrophe in the limit of large growth velocities is remarkably similar across different models. In the second part of the paper, we extend our analysis to the entire filament by making a conjecture that a minimum number of such transitions are required to occur for the onset of microtubule catastrophe. The frequency of microtubule catastrophe is then determined using numerical simulations and compared with analytical and semianalytical estimates made under steady-state and quasi-steady-state assumptions, respectively, for the protofilament dynamics. A few relevant experimental results are analyzed in detail and compared with predictions from the model. Our results indicate that loss of GTP cap in two to three protofilaments is necessary to trigger catastrophe in a microtubule. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Microtubule catastrophe from protofilament dynamics

Supramolecular interactions of polynitroxides with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) were used to control intramolecular electron spin-spin exchange couplings in these stable radicals. In the absence of γ-CD, the binitroxide T2 and trinitroxide T3 showed strong spin-spin coupling as evidenced by the high exchange coupling constant of J = 120 MHz for T2 in its EPR spectra. Host/guest complexes are formed upon addition of γ-CD to the polynitroxides where the nitroxide moiety interacts with the γ-CD cavity, which causes suppression of spin exchange. By variation of the host/guest ratio, the nature of a trinitroxide spin system can be tuned from a three-spin to a two-spin to a one-spin system. In addition to the host/guest ratio, the spin exchange coupling can also be tuned by temperature, which shifts the equilibrium between CD-encapsulated nitroxides and free nitroxides. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Control of spin-spin exchange interactions in polynitroxides through inclusion within γ-cyclodextrin

Coordination self-assembly of a series of tetranuclear Pt(ii) macrocycles containing an organometallic backbone incorporating ethynyl functionality is presented. The 1:1 combination of a linear acceptor 1,4-bis[trans-Pt(PEt 3)2(NO3)(ethynyl)]benzene (1) with three different dipyridyl donor 'clips' (La-Lc) afforded three [2 + 2] self-assembled PtII4 macrocycles (2a-2c) in quantitative yields, respectively [La = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl) isothalamide; Lb = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl)ethynylbenzene; Lc = 1,8-bis(4-pyridyl)ethynylanthracene]. These macrocycles were characterized by multinuclear NMR (1H and 31P); ESI-MS spectroscopy and the molecular structures of 2a and 2b were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These macrocycles (2a-2c) are fluorescent in nature. The amide functionalized macrocycle 2a is used as a receptor to check the binding affinity of aliphatic acyclic dicarboxylic acids. Such binding affinity is examined using fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopic methods. A solution state fluorescence study showed that macrocycle 2a selectively binds (KSV = 1.4 × 104 M-1) maleic acid by subsequent enhancement in emission intensity. Other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as fumaric, succinic, adipic, mesaconic and itaconic acids caused no change in the emission spectra; thereby demonstrating its potential use as a macrocyclic receptor in distinction of maleic acid from other aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Coordination self-assembly of tetranuclear Pt(ii) macrocycles with an organometallic backbone for sensing of acyclic dicarboxylic acids

As semiconductor devices scale to new dimensions, the materials and designs become more dependent on atomic details. NEMO5 is a nanoelectronics modeling package designed for comprehending the critical multi-scale, multi-physics phenomena through efficient computational approaches and quantitatively modeling new generations of nanoelectronic devices as well as predicting novel device architectures and phenomena. This article seeks to provide updates on the current status of the tool and new functionality, including advances in quantum transport simulations and with materials such as metals, topological insulators, and piezoelectrics. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Efficient and realistic device modeling from atomic detail to the nanoscale

The paper presents an intelligent relaying scheme for transmission line in presence of UPFC. Transmission line distance relaying in presence of FACTs devices like UPFC has been a very challenging task. A new differential feature based approach using DFT based pre-processor and Decision tree (DT) is presented here for protection of transmission lines containing UPFC. A case study considering a 500-kV Transmission line of length 400-k.m(both single circuit and double circuit) is taken for simulation purpose in MATLAB environment and the results obtained show feasibility of the proposed relaying scheme. © 2013 IEEE.
