Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

We derive estimates for approximation numbers of bounded linear operators between normed linear spaces. As special cases of our general results, approximation numbers of some weighted shift operators on p and those of isometries andprojections of norm 1 are found. In the case of finite-rank operators, we obtain estimatesfor the smallest nonzero approximation number in terms of their generalizedinverses. Also, we prove some results regarding the relation between approximationnumbers and the closedness of the range of an operator.We recall that the closednessof the range is a necessary condition for the boundedness of a generalized inverse.We give examples illustrating the results and also show that certain inequalities neednot hold. © Springer India 2013.

Generalized inverses and approximation numbers

A computational methodology is proposed to predict the running clearance of a six-tooth straight-through rotating labyrinth seal numerically by taking into account both the centrifugal and thermal growths. Four different angular velocities ranging from 0 to 3000 rad/s are chosen to study the influence of rotation on the leakage flow rate. The detailed leakage flow fields and the structural deformations are presented. Further, different pressure ratios in the range of 1.1 to 2.5 have been investigated for a wide range of initial clearances. The methodology is validated against the available data in the literature. It is found out that there is a significant reduction in leakage flow rate by incorporating the radial growth for a particular operating condition. However, for a given initial clearance, the rotation has negligible effect on the reduction in the leakage flow rate, except at pressure ratios lower than 1.7. Further; the rotation has more prominent effect for smaller clearance values. Copyright © 2013 by ASME.

Performance analysis of a rotating labyrinth seal with radial growth

Quantum discord is a more general measure of quantum correlations than entanglement and has been proposed as a resource in certain quantum information processing tasks. The computation of discord is mostly confined to two-qubit systems for which an analytical calculational scheme is available. The utilization of quantum correlations in quantum information-based applications is limited by the problem of decoherence, i.e., the loss of coherence due to the inevitable interaction of a quantum system with its environment. The dynamics of quantum correlations due to decoherence may be studied in the Kraus operator formalism for different types of quantum channels representing system-environment interactions. In this review, we describe the salient features of the dynamics of classical and quantum correlations in a two-qubit system under Markovian (memoryless) time evolution. The two-qubit state considered is described by the reduced density matrix obtained from the ground state of a spin model. The models considered include the transverse-field XY model in one dimension, a special case of which is the transverse-field Ising model, and the XXZ spin chain. The quantum channels studied include the amplitude damping, bit-flip, bit-phase-flip and phase-flip channels. The Kraus operator formalism is briefly introduced and the origins of different types of dynamics discussed. One can identify appropriate quantities associated with the dynamics of quantum correlations which provide signatures of quantum phase transitions in the spin models. Experimental observations of the different types of dynamics are also mentioned. © 2013 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Quantum discord, decoherence and quantum phase transition

Rotors today are made highly flexible with ever increasing demand for higher speeds, and it is important to predict the rotor dynamic behaviour accurately. Supports play an important role and influence the magnitude of vibration in response to external forces. In the present study, frequency dependent polymeric support characteristics have been found by using a multi objective optimisation scheme for minimising the unbalanced response and maximising the stability limit speed. This is an improvement over the previous papers where a simple equally weighted sum of two objective functions was used. A novel hybrid of particle swarm optimisation (PSO) and augmented Lagrangian has been used here to find the global minima. Using appropriate constraints, the slope of the support characteristics versus frequency is restricted to realistic values. Rotor systems with rolling element bearings and plain cylindrical journal bearings are studied using this approach and higher stability limits are obtained. Multi-objective optimisation of support characteristics of rotor bearing systems

Determination of critical state parameters are essential, when critical state soil mechanics based soil models are used for the analysis. Isotropic consolidation test and triaxial tests with accurate measurements of volume change and pore pressure are essential for the direct measurement of critical state parameters. However, in the conventional geotechnical engineering practice, isotropic compression tests are usually not conducted but only one-dimensional consolidation test are performed. The usual parameters reported in most of the soil investigation reports are the shear strength parameters c′ and φ{symbol}′ and the consolidation parameters such as compression index (Cc) and the recompression index (Cr) apart from, the overburden pressure σ0′ and the corresponding void ratio e0. The critical state parameters are seldom reported in most of the soil investigation reports. This paper explains a procedure to estimate the critical state parameters, in the absence of isotropic compression test data, based on one-dimensional consolidation tests and triaxial compression tests, using the equations of Modified Cam clay state boundary surface. Comparison of the calculated values from the suggested method with the measured values, on three reconstituted soils and one undisturbed soil, lends support to the validity of the proposed procedure. © 2013 Indian Geotechnical Society.

Estimation of Critical State Parameters from One-dimensional Consolidation and Triaxial Compression Tests

Motor-driven bidirectional transport inside a cell is an intriguing phenomenon where multiple dyneins and kinesins drag cargoes and deliver them to specific locations. Quite often, both anterograde (plus) and retrograde (minus) directed motors reside simultaneously on the cargo and co-ordinate their activity such that the motion of the cargo looks like spells of plus directed and minus directed segments, with pauses in between. The stochastic tug-of-war model is widely used to analyze this motion, largely studied by computer simulations. Here, we present some analytical results for this model, such as the average durations of plus and minus-run segments and tug-of-war events as well as probabilities of persistence and reversal of directions following a tug-of-war. We show that cargo motion has memory in case of 2 dyneins and 1 kinesin driving together, while it is absent when only a dynein and a kinesin is involved. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Bidirectional transport of motor-driven cargoes in cell: A random walk with memory

This paper presents computational work on the biogas early phase combustion in spark ignition (SI) engines using detailed chemical kinetics. Specifically, the early phase combustion is studied to assess the effect of various ignition parameters such as spark plug location, spark energy and number of spark plugs. An integrated version of the KIVA-3V and CHEMKIN codes was developed and used for the simulations utilizing detailed kinetics involving 325 reactions and 53 species. The results show that location of the spark plug and local flow field play an important role. A central plug configuration, which is associated with higher local flow velocities in the vicinity of the spark plug, showed faster initial combustion. Although a dual plug configuration shows the highest rate of fuel consumption, it is comparable to the rate exhibited by the central plug case. The radical species important in the initiation of combustion are identified and their concentrations are monitored during the early phase of combustion. The concentration of these radicals is also observed to correlate very well with the above-mentioned trend. Thus, the role of these radicals in promoting faster combustion has been clearly established. It is also observed that the minimum ignition energy required to initiate a self-sustained flame depends on the flow field condition in the vicinity of the spark plug. Increasing the methane content in the biogas has shown improved combustion. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Full chemical kinetic simulation of biogas early phase combustion in SI engines

Room temperature photolysis of a triply-bridged borylene complex, {[}(3-BH)(Cp{*}RuCO)2(-CO)Fe(CO)3] (1a; Cp{*}=C5Me5), in the presence of a series of alkynes, 1,2-diphenylethyne, 1-phenyl-1-propyne, and 2-butyne led to the isolation of unprecedented vinyl-borylene complexes (Z)-{[}(Cp{*}RuCO)2(-CO)B(CR)(CHR)] (2: R, R=Ph; 3: R=Me, R=Ph; 4: R, R=Me). This reaction permits a hydroboration of alkyne through an anti-Markovnikov addition. In stark contrast, in the presence of phenylacetylene, a metallacarborane, closo-{[}1,2-(Cp{*}Ru)2(-CO)2\{Fe2(CO)5\}-4-Ph-4,5-C2BH2] (5a), is formed. A plausible mechanism has been proposed for the formation of vinyl-borylene complexes, which is supported by density functional theory (DFT) methods. Furthermore, the calculated 11BNMR chemical shifts accurately reflect the experimentally measured shifts. All the new compounds have been characterized in solution by mass spectrometry and IR, 1H, 11B, and 13CNMR spectroscopies and the structural types were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis of 2, 5a, and 5b.

Syntheses and Characterization of New Vinyl-Borylene Complexes by the Hydroboration of Alkynes with {[}(μ3-BH)(Cp{*}RuCO)2(μ-CO)Fe(CO)3]

A graph is k-chordal if it has no induced cycle of length greater than k. We give a new characterization of k-chordal graphs that generalizes the well-known characterization of chordal graphs by Dirac in terms of simplicial vertices and simplicial orderings. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
