Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

Mixed infections are one of the major therapeutic challenges, as the current strategies have had limited success. One of the most common and widespread conditions of mixed infection is respiratory syncytial virus-mediated pathology of the respiratory tract in children. There is a dire need for the development of novel therapeutic approaches during mixed infections. Therapeutic intravenous immunoglobulin preparations, obtained from plasma pools of healthy donors have been used in immune deficiencies. This study was thus designed to characterize the functional efficacy of RSV-specific antibodies in IVIg. To explore the functional ability of these affinity-purified RSV-specific antibodies, the antibody-dependent and complement dependent cytotoxicity was determined using peripheral cells of healthy donors. This study demonstrates the existence of highly potent RSV-specific antibodies in IVIg preparations and provides the basis for the use of IVIg as broad-spectrum protective shield to RSV-infected children during mixed infections. © 2013 Gupta et al.

Experimental Study on Dead-Time Induced Oscillations in a 100-kW Open-Loop Induction Motor Drive

We present a TCAD (Technology Computer Aided Design) compatible multiscale model of phonon-assisted band-to-band tunneling in semiconductors, which incorporates the non-parabolic nature of complex bands within the bandgap of the material. This model is shown capture the measured current-voltage data in silicon, for current transport along the [100], [110], and [111] directions. Our model will be useful to predict band-to-band tunneling phenomena to quantify on and off currents in tunnel FETs and in small geometry MOSFETs and FINFETs. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Multiscale model for phonon-assisted band-to-band tunneling in semiconductors

Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors for DRAM applications have been realized using TiO2/ZrO2/TiO2 (TZT) and AlO-doped TZT (TZAZT and TZAZAZT) dielectric stacks. High capacitance densities of about 46.6 fF/μm2 (for TZT stacks), 46.2 fF/μm2 (for TZAZT stacks), and 46.8 fF/μm2 (for TZAZAZT stacks) have been achieved. Low leakage current densities of about 4.9×10-8 A/cm2, 5.5×10-9 A/cm2, and 9.7×10-9 A/cm2 (at -1 V) have been obtained for TZT, TZAZT, and TZAZAZT stacks, respectively. We analyze the leakage current mechanisms at different electric field regimes, and compute the barrier heights. The effects of constant current stress and constant voltage stress on the device characteristics are studied, and excellent device reliability is demonstrated. We compare the device performance of the fabricated capacitors with other stacked high-k MIM capacitors reported in recent literature. © 2013 Materials Research Society.

High-performance MIM capacitors based on TiO2/ZrO 2/TiO2and AlO-doped TiO2/ZrO 2/TiO2 dielectric stacks for DRAM applications

Micro electric discharge milling (μ-ED milling) is an effective and economic process for the fabrication of micro channels. In the present work, the bulk approach of μ-ED milling is being attempted to make complex shaped micro channels. For a straight channel the bulk approach of μ-ED milling was found to be a successful approach. A tungsten tool of diameter 500 μm was used to fabricate semi-circular micro channels on EN-24 steel. Important machining parameters had earlier been optimized to make straight channels on EN-24 steel by the same method. The effect of geometrical parameters such as radius of curved channel and aspect ratio on MRR and TWR were studied by full factorial experimental design for single pass at optimized machining parameters. Finally complex shapes like T-type and serpentine channels were made by using optimized conditions of straight and curved channels by bulk approach with multiple passes of μ-ED milling. Disorder and Magnetism in Two Dimensional Quantum Systems

The internal state of complex modern processors often needs to be dumped out frequently during post-silicon validation. Since the last level cache (considered L2 in this paper) holds most of the state, the volume of data dumped and the transfer time are dominated by the L2 cache. The limited bandwidth to transfer data off-chip coupled with the large size of L2 cache results in stalling the processor for long durations when dumping the cache contents off-chip. To alleviate this, we propose to transfer only those cache lines that were updated since the previous dump. Since maintaining a bit-vector with a separate bit to track the status of individual cache lines is expensive, we propose 2 methods: (i) where a bit tracks multiple cache lines and (ii) an Interval Table which stores only the starting and ending addresses of continuous runs of updated cache lines. Both methods require significantly lesser space compared to a bit-vector, and allow the designer to choose the amount of space to allocate for this design-for-debug (DFD) feature. The impact of reducing storage space is that some non-updated cache lines are dumped too. We attempt to minimize such overheads. Further, the Interval Table is independent of the cache size which makes it ideal for large caches. Through experimentation, we also determine the break-even point below which a t-lines/bit bit-vector is beneficial compared to an Interval Table. © 2013 EDAA.

Space sensitive cache dumping for post-silicon validation

In the present study the detection of the crack in rotor system has been carried out using the statistical features such as kurtosis, skewness and crest factor of vibration response. Such features, mainly kurtosis have been used in literature for identifying bearing and gearbox defects. The simulation results of crack detection have been compared with those of experiments carried out using laser vibrometer. Single and two cracks have been identified. It has been noted that the kurtosis and skewness changes are significant when the crack is closer to the bearing locations. The skewness is mostly negative but as the crack depth increases the positive values of skewness increase beyond the middle part of the shaft. The crest factor deviation curve is developed, which could successfully identify even cracks of small depths. © KRISHTEL eMAGING SOLUTIONS PRIVATE LIMITED.

Vibration based statistical features for shaft crack detection in a rotor

High speed rotating machinery operating with higher load capacity in extreme working conditions can induce fatigue crack into the systems. To avoid failure of the system, it has to be monitored continuously for cracks before it becomes critical. There is a need for the newer techniques that can detect even small cracks. The aim of the present work is to identify the crack in a rotor-bearing system using the concept of operational deflection shape and using kurtosis of vibration response. In the literature kurtosis is used for identifying bearing and gearbox defects. Higher kurtosis means more of the variance is due to infrequent extreme deviations, as opposed to frequent modestly sized deviations. In this study kurtosis deviation curve and amplitude deviation curves are also used for shaft crack detection. It has been noted that the kurtosis changes are significant when the crack is closer to the bearing locations. Single cracks and two cracks have been identified. The rotational laser vibrometer has been used to measure the response from the rotating system. Crack detection in a rotor by operational deflection shape and kurtosis using laser vibrometer measurements

Unbalance and bow are found to be one of the most common causes of synchronous machinery vibrations in rotating systems. Concentrated lumped mass models are adopted in most of the finite element approach for modeling unbalances and subsequent balancing in rotating systems. But this assumption may not be appropriate for long slender rotors with unbalances distributed along the length of the rotor. A polynomial curve for eccentricity distribution with finite element modeling is used to identify the distributed unbalance. The unbalance eccentricity distributions are estimated using the measured vibration responses at a speed below the balancing speed. Modal correction mass required to balance a rotor at its first bending critical speed, having both distributed unbalance and bow is computed knowing the amplification factor at critical speed. The rotor is balanced at its first bending critical speed using modal balancing method in a single trial run and using a single balancing plane. The method thus avoids multiple trial runs required for modal balancing of flexible rotors. This method is verified on an experimental rotor having both bow and unbalance. The concept of quantifying the distributed unbalance using 'Norm' of eccentricity polynomial function is also introduced for the first time. © 2013 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
