Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

[2 + 4] self-assembly of a pyrene-functionalized PtII 8 tetragonal prism (2) is achieved using a newly designed star-shaped organometallic acceptor (1) in combination with an amide-based "clip" donor (L). The propensity of this prism (2) as a selective sensor for nitroaromatics (2,4-dinitrotoluene, 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene, and picric acid), which are the chemical constituents of many commercial explosives, has been examined. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Self-assembly of an octanuclear platinum(II) tetragonal prism from a new PtII4 organometallic star-shaped acceptor and its nitroaromatic sensing study

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is a therapeutic preparation consisting of pools of normal, polyspecific IgG antibodies obtained from plasma of several thousand healthy individuals. In addition to its use in primary and secondary immune deficiency, IVIg is increasingly used in the therapy of a large number of autoimmune conditions. Despite its successful use in immunopathologies for over two decades, the precise mechanisms underlying the therapeutic benefit have not been fully elucidated. We and others have demonstrated that IVIg inhibits the antigen uptake and presentation by dendritic cells (DC). Here we report that IVIg-mediated inhibition of uptake and processing of antigens is associated with an increased accumulation of lipid as analyzed by flow cytometry and electron microscopy. As accumulation of lipids in DC is known to impart tolerogenic properties, these findings unravel novel link between antibodies and intracellular physiology of innate cells and may further uncover novel immunoregulatory mechanisms of IVIg in auto-inflammatory diseases. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Band to band tunneling in semiconductors fundamentally depends of the complex bandstructure of the semiconductor within its bandgap. In this work, the orientation dependent complex bandstructure of InSb, InAs, GaSb, InP and GaAs, and the orientation dependent probability of band to band tunneling in these materials have been computed using an sp3d5s* tight binding model. These direct bandgap III-V materials are attractive candidates for Tunnel FETs. Comparison of our results with Kane's two-band model commonly used in TCAD simulation, demonstrates the inaccuracies of the latter. Our results will be useful in the design of better performing Tunnel FETs in these materials. © 2012 SPIE.

Complex bandstructure of direct bandgap III-V semiconductors: Application to tunneling

In this work, we study the phenomenon of Direct Tunneling(DT) in Metal-nGaN Schottky junctions. We first compare tunneling current densities computed using quantum (NEGF) and the semi-classical (WKB) transport formulations, based on a single band parabolic approximation to the complex GaN bandstructure. We then estimate current densities using the WKB transport formulation, with complex bandstructures extracted from the two band k·p and four band k·p theories of the wurtzite GaN. We find that a WKB transport formulation is quite reliable for low bias values. We also find that the use of multi-band k·p models for calculating tunneling effective mass is necessary to estimate tunneling current densities accurately. © 2012 IEEE.

Comparison of direct tunneling in Metal-GaN Schottky junctions using different k·p models for the complex bandstructure

Band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) determines the on-current in tunnel FETs (TFETs). There is a need to review and recalibrate BTBT models used in TCAD tools, which were developed when BTBT was essentially a leakage phenomenon. Here, we consider the process of BTBT through staggered heterojunctions which find application in the design of TFETs having high on-currents. We use a simple 1-D system and compare the estimates of BTBT computed with a semi-classical WKB approach and that obtained from a solution of Schrödinger's equation by a wavefunction matching procedure. We show that the WKB method significantly overestimates the tunneling current through heterojunctions. © 2012 IEEE.

Band to band tunneling in heterojunctions: Semi-classical versus quantum computation

Mechanical systems with rolling constraints form a class of nonholonomic systems. In this paper we derive the dynamic model of a spherical robot, which has been designed and realized in our laboratory, using Lagrangian reduction theory defined on symmetry groups. The reduction is achieved by applying Hamilton's variation principle on a reduced Lagrangian and then imposing the nonholonomic constraints. The equations of motion are in the Euler-Poincaré form and are equivalent to those obtained using Lagrange-d'Alembert's principle. © 2012 IFAC.

The euler-poincaré equations for a spherical robot actuated by a pendulum

The rainbow connection number, rc(G), of a connected graph G is the minimum number of colors needed to color its edges, so that every pair of vertices is connected by at least one path in which no two edges are colored the same. Our main result is that rc(G) ≤ [n/2] e for any 2-connected graph with at least three vertices. We conjecture that rc(G) ≤ n/k+ C for a _-connected graph G of order n, where C is a constant, and prove the conjecture for certain classes of graphs. We also prove that rc(G) ≤ (2 + ε)n/k+ 23= ε2 for any ε &gt; 0.

Based on a criterion of permutation polynomials of the form x rf(x q-1/m) by Wan and Lidl (1991) and some very elementary techniques we show existence of permutation binomials of the following forms (i) x(x 2n-1/3 + a) ∈ double-struck F 2n[x], for n &gt; 4 (ii) x 22n-1/2n-1+1 + ax = x 2n+2 + ax ∈ double-struck F 22n[x], for n ≥ 3. In (i), we extend a result of Carlitz (1962) for even characteristic. Moreover we present the count of such permutation binomials when a is in a certain subfield of double-struck F 2n. In (ii), we reprove, using much simpler technique, a recent result of Charpin and Kyureghyan (2008) and give the number of permutation binomials of this form. Finally, we discuss some cryptographic relevance of these results. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

On some permutation binomials of the form x 2n-1/k+1 + ax over double-struck F 2n: Existence and count

Clay-based landfill covers often have a geomembrane (GM) layer sandwiching between the clay barrier and the cover soil. The knowledge pertaining to the deformation behaviour of a clay barrier along with geomembrane subjected to differential settlements is very limited. Hence, the main objective of this paper is to examine the influence of GM on the integrity of clay-based landfill covers subjected to differential settlements in a geotechnical centrifuge. First, scaling considerations required for modelling geomembrane in a centrifuge are presented. A series of centrifuge tests were performed at 40 gravities using a 4.5 m radius beam centrifuge having a capacity of 2500 g-kN available at IIT Bombay on model clay-based landfill covers with and without GM. By maintaining type moist-compacted conditions of the clay barrier as constant, the thickness of the clay barrier was varied as 0.6 m and 1 m. The performance of the clay barrier with and without GM was monitored by measuring water breakthrough at the onset of differential settlements. The analysis and interpretation of centrifuge test results reveal that with the provision of a GM and an overburden pressure equivalent to that of a landfill cover, the sealing efficiency of the cover system was found to be maintained even after the formation of full-depth cracks within 0.6 m and 1 m thick clay barriers subjected to a maximum distortion level of 0.125. This observed behaviour is attributed to the downward thrust exerted by the deformed geomembrane at the zone of maximum curvature which hinders the infiltration of water through cracks. This indicates the significant influence of GM in maintaining the sealing efficiency of a landfill cover system. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
