Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad&nbsp;(IIT Palakkad or IIT PKD) is a public autonomous&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;and&nbsp;research&nbsp;institute located in&nbsp;Palakkad,&nbsp;Kerala. It was&nbsp;one of the five new&nbsp;IITs&nbsp;proposed in the&nbsp;2014 Union budget of India. The campus was inaugurated on 3 August 2015. The institute has 94 faculty, 978 students, and 63 non-teaching staffs.

IT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and two years MS programmes in 8 different engineering disciplines including&nbsp;Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil among others.

An asymmetrical pulse width modulated (APWM) full-bridge DC-DC converter for interfacing photovoltaic (PV) system with electric vehicle (EV) battery system is presented in this paper. The active switches in the front end converter are turned on at zero voltage with the proposed APWM technique. The operation of the converter with this technique is explained with detailed analysis. The theoretical waveforms and equations governing the operating intervals of the converter are also discussed. Simulation results of the proposed APWM soft switched full-bridge DC-DC converter are used to verify the theoretical analysis. A 100kHz, 1kW full-bridge converter prototype is developed and hardware results for zero voltage transition are presented. © 2014 IEEE.

An APWM soft switched DC-DC converter for PV and EV

We study the effect of the presence of different types of critical points, such as ordinary critical points, multicritical points and quasicritical points, along different paths on the fidelity susceptibility and Loschmidt echo of a three-spin interacting transverse Ising chain using a method that does not involve the language of tensors. We find that the scaling of the fidelity susceptibility and Loschmidt echo with the system size at these special critical points of the model studied is in agreement with the known results, thus supporting our method. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA Medialab srl.

Fidelity susceptibility and Loschmidt echo for generic paths in a three-spin interacting transverse Ising model

Anomalous behaviour in density, diffusivity, and structural order is investigated for silicon modeled by the Stillinger-Weber potential by performing molecular dynamics simulations. As previously reported in the case of water [J. R. Errington and P. G. Debenedetti, Nature (London) 409, 318 (2001)] and silica [M. S. Shell, P. G. Debenedetti, and A. Z. Panagiotopoulos, Phys. Rev. E 66, 011202 (2002)], a cascading of thermodynamic, dynamic, and structural anomalous regions is also observed in liquid silicon. The region of structural anomaly includes the region of diffusivity anomaly, which in turn encompasses the region of density anomaly (which is unlike water but similar to silica). In the region of structural anomaly, a tight correlation between the translational and tetrahedrality order parameter is found, but the correlation is weaker when a local orientational order parameter (q3) is used as a measure of tetrahedrality. The total excess entropy and the pair correlation entropy are computed across the phase diagram and the correlation between the excess entropy and the regions of anomalies in the phase diagram of liquid silicon is examined. Scaling relations associating the excess entropy with the diffusion coefficient show considerable deviation from the quasi-universal behaviour observed in hard-sphere and Lennard-Jones liquids and some liquid metals. Excess entropy based criteria for diffusivity and structural anomalies fail to capture the observed regions of anomaly. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Nesting of thermodynamic, structural, and dynamic anomalies in liquid silicon

We prove the existence of a solution between an ordered pair of sub and supersolutions for singular quasilinear elliptic problems on unbounded domains. Further, we use this result to establish the existence of a positive solution to the problem {-Δpu=λK(x)f(u)in B1 c,u=0 on ∂B1, u(x)→0 as |x|→∞, where B1c={x ∈ ℝn||x|&gt;1}, Δpu=div(|∇u|p-2∇u),1&lt;p&lt;n, λ is a positive parameter, K belongs to a class of functions which satisfy certain decay assumptions and f belongs to a class of (p-1)-subhomogeneous functions which may be singular at the origin, namely lim s→0+f(s)=-∞. Singular quasilinear elliptic problems on unbounded domains

We study the existence of a positive radial solution to the nonlinear eigenvalue problem (Formula presented.) in (Formula presented.) in (Formula presented.) as (Formula presented.), where (Formula presented.) is a parameter, (Formula presented.) is the Laplace operator, (Formula presented.) are such that (Formula presented.). Here (Formula presented.) are (Formula presented.) functions such that they are negative at the origin (semipositone) and superlinear at infinity. We establish the existence of a positive solution for λ small via degree theory and rescaling arguments. Positive solutions for a class of superlinear semipositone systems on exterior domains

We consider the problem of similarity search within a set of top-k lists under the Kendall's Tau distance function. This distance describes how related two rankings are in terms of concordantly and discordantly ordered items. As top-k lists are usually very short compared to the global domain of possible items to be ranked, creating an inverted index to look up overlapping lists is possible but does not capture tight enough the similarity measure. In this work, we investigate locality sensitive hashing schemes for the Kendall's Tau distance and evaluate the proposed methods using two real-world datasets.

An LSH Index for Computing Kendall's Tau over Top-k Lists

Use of fibre-reinforced concrete for pavements, though widely established, lacks comprehensive standardization with respect to both design as well as implementation. Most widely used design methods have adopted the established techniques used for slab-on-grade, mostly due to lack of studies specific to pavements. This is a major drawback since the failure of slabs-on-grade is predominantly caused by static loading whereas the failure of pavements, more often than not, occurs at much lower stresses due to fatigue. In this context, a comprehensive design methodology exclusively for FRC pavements is proposed here including the effect of fatigue in conjunction with inelastic analysis. The static load design equation is based on Meyerhofs ultimate load (yield line) analysis. The material capacity is estimated using the flexural capacity factored by a stress reduction factor for FRC in the cracked and the uncracked state obtained from suitable S-N relations to account for the fatigue stresses. The material parameters incorporated in the design equations include the flexural strength and the equivalent flexural strength of FRC obtained using the unnotched prisms as per Japanese standards (JSCE-SF4).

A Novel Technique for Estimation of Thermal Contact Conductance between Circular Bolted Joints using Inverse Heat Transfer Methodology

The recently synthesized iridate β-Li2IrO3 has been proposed as a candidate to display novel magnetic behavior stabilized by frustration effects from bond-dependent, anisotropic interactions (Kitaev model) on a three-dimensional "hyperhoneycomb" lattice. Here we report a combined study using neutron powder diffraction and magnetic resonant x-ray diffraction to solve the complete magnetic structure. We find a complex, incommensurate magnetic order with non-coplanar and counter-rotating Ir moments, which surprisingly shares many of its features with the related structural polytype "stripyhoneycomb" γ-Li2IrO3, where dominant Kitaev interactions have been invoked to explain the stability of the observed magnetic structure. The similarities of behavior between those two structural polytypes, which have different global lattice topologies but the same local connectivity, are strongly suggestive that the same magnetic interactions and the same underlying mechanism govern the stability of the magnetic order in both materials, indicating that both β- and γ-Li2IrO3 are strong candidates to realize dominant Kitaev interactions in a solid state material. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Unconventional magnetic order on the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev lattice in β-Li2IrO3: Full solution via magnetic resonant x-ray diffraction

In a rotor-bearing system running with uniform angular acceleration, after running through the resonance, typical beat vibrations occur because the response of the system consists of the natural and excited motion. Shortly after resonance both are vibrations with frequencies close to each other. The present study explains a method for estimating damping of rotor-bearing systems from transient beat characteristics observed during the run-up stage. A mathematical justification is provided that the transient response of the rotor-bearing system consists of a beat response when the system crosses resonance. It is also clear from the mathematical model that the beat phenomenon observed depends on the level of damping in the system. The beat time period is also dependent on the angular acceleration of the system. This beat response is considered for wavelet analysis and the damping is estimated. Angular acceleration (α) of the rotor often increases the damping effects. This paper investigates how the damping ratio changes with respect to different angular acceleration values of the rotor-bearing system. Experimental validation of the beat phenomenon and damping identification is done for a rotor-bearing system. Validation for the above proposed method is done by the half-power bandwidth method of the run-up response and logarithmic decrement method of the beat response. A damping estimation from the impulse response of the stationary rotor by using wavelet transforms is also presented and validated using the logarithmic decrement method. © The Author(s) 2013 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav.
